Why on earth do they have a "Hans und Gretel"-type cottage and heroes3 look-alike trees in H5? Cripes!
It is a fake, 100% sure. Celestial Heavens wrote on their news page that they had made it themselves with a number of screenshots from other games. AoM, Empire Earth, Disciples II, HOMM4 and HOMM3 WoG were some of them.

Forgotten about Starcraft!
Besides what do you use Lizardmen for? They're useless piece of art! Their growth etc. Only in WoG where they shoot 2 times they have some meaning in battle.
I play heroes a lot and I always found it better to play other towns than Fortress.

It was truth until WoG. Including the two-shot ability that lizards gained they got some other bonuses. Wyvern Monarchs have 100 hit points now compared to the previous 70 and Chaos Hydra got a boost from 250 to 300. Besides that Lizard wariors have +1 ATT, Monarchs +1 DEF and Chaos have +2 ATT and +2 Speed. With that alterations the fortress town has become a match for any one and in auto-combat test they were ranked forth.

Even without WoG, Fortress can be powerful in the hands of a skilled player (not that I am one lol). Please note that it's more defense-oriented than any other town in the game, and thus requires a bit different tactics than, say, Stronghold or Castle.

For the same reason, I vote Crusader and Grand Elf as two of the worst units in HOMM3.

Quote: Which is better?
Take a guess and then look at this site...
Lizard Warriors vs. Marksmen
First of all, that test compares 50 Lizardman Warriors vs 50 Marksmen. This is a terrible way to do it.
First of all, it should be either one of the following:
1) Compare a value worth of troops (e.g. 1000 gold worth)
or
2) Compare a certain number of week's growth (e.g. 10 week's growth)
Since Marksmen are cheaper, and generate more per week than Lizardman Warriors, then it is clearly unrealistic to compare 50 vs 50 in this way. Any player in the game is going to be comparing based on one of the two factors that I suggested. If money is an issue, then it is a certain number of gold pieces. If not, then it will simply be how many you can accumulate in a certain amount of time. And, you will find, that if you do this using a more realistic tool, and one which is applicable to the game, then Marksmen do indeed win. Not by a great margin, but they do win. They are in fact the number 1 level 2 upgrade. Archers, on the other hand, are not the best level 2 creature. Lizardmen are. Upgraded, Marksmen are the best by any realistic measure.
When I have played Fortress, I would not take my shooters out with me when hunting. In the first week, I would, because I wouldn't have anything else. But once I had my full army, I would leave the hydras and lizardmen back in the base. They are both too slow for adventuring, and yet are fantastic in holding the castle. Your castle is virtually guaranteed to withstand all but the most viscious attack. Split the lizardmen into 2 groups with your hydra in the middle. And hire a hero to garrison in the town so that he picks up artifacts of players who die while you are out exploring. He'll also get some experience doing this.
Then, once you have explored everything, and its time to dimension door/town gate your way around the map, then movement doesn't mean a lot, so you take your 42 chaos hydras and take on the world. By then, your 275 lizardmen warriors will be quite a force. Indeed, you might not have too many other troops besides these.
I liked Fortress because it was so cheap to get good troops. You could get up to Wyvern pretty easily. You also had a guaranteed first spell thanks to the dragon flies, who also had that habit of dispelling magic (great for when they stupidly cast anti magic on a protected creature, then you dispel it, and attack it anyway). Also of course you had those great Gorgons who would kill things straight. I'd be a bit cautious with attacking with them, but they do pack a punch.
The problem with Fortress is that stuff dies all the time. They are great for that one off battle, but you are soon running out of troops, and money. So I'd basically try to pump up on spells, especially ones which protected my creatures, and I'd usually combine them with something from another town.
Its not a bad town to play, but I still think that Rampart is the best HOMM3 town.
Of course, Castle towns are the easiest to play, but that goes without saying.

There...is...NO...overall BEST town. What a person's good with and what they rn't good with is just that. Any of the other 8 towns' could probably STOMP on Rampart, depending on the player.

Yup.
The reason why I preferred to play Rampart overall was because of the money.
If you save up money (i.e. you are not getting attacked constantly) then you buy yourself a Dwarven mine and you rake it in.
The more Rampart towns you own, the more quickly you become a millionaire.
No other town can compete with its money making potential.
Of course, at some stage, you have to actually start buying stuff.
But you are right that they were very well balanced. Necromancer was good because you'd really only need to buy Vampire Lords (I'd like about 50) and then let the skeletons accumulate, and you're set. But they are woefully expensive if actually buying the whole set of troops.

Hey! You've forgot that a battle between creatures means nothing. Even if liz-warrior beats marksman, the second would be better 8( for he does more damage. For shooters, damage is more important than HP in most battles.
