This is somewhat subjective. So here are my preferences. I have no problem with no retaliation or double attack. I have been thoroughly irritated by the multiple space attacks because they mix 2 contradictory concepts. Can you figure out what 2?
I am generally against creature-unique abilities. They mess up the game in multiple ways.
Here is a list of the abilities I accept, dont, and hate.
Accept:
no retaliation
double attack
unlimited retaliation
magic immunity
harpies' ability
mantises' binding ability
No:
% magic resist
% cast spell
% defense(minotaurs)
regeneration
Hate:
Ghost(Kills=more ghosts)
Genie(10% halve enemy unit)
instant death(medusa)

Couple questions about that list
When you say you don't like the %chance to cast spell, do you prefer the always cast(like mummies in H4) or just don't like combining Spells and attacks?
Why is magic immunity good and %magic resist bad? Or are you just saying that dragons should be the only creatures with the sheer power to resist magic?
Whats wrong with regen? its not like any top level creatures have it
I will agree with you on your hate list. There is no reason a single genie can kill 500 swordsmen(yes, I had it happen). The ghost ability could work if they had made it every 50 hp of creatures killed, or something to limit them. It wasn't so bad in heroes 1 with Turn Undead.
And another one, how do you feel about instant death abilities like medusa and sea monster?

So was the land riven by Chaos and Destruction, and so it was cleansed from existence. I did this, the Magus of Ly'kail, Magus of the Sylvan Kingdoms.

Better not combine them. Exceptions can exist, like the mantis, but in general they are a poor mix and deteriorate gameplay.

All this leaves too much to chance. Chance should not play a significant role in the game.
I'd like to see HoMM move toward harder decision making and more room for choice. That is the main reason I hate closed maps. They severely limit your options and cripple gameplay. Dont you agree?

Its a little of the subject but i was thinking that there should be options to make peace or to declare war to a player...it would spice things up.Or if you have a little time to send a message to make fun of him or to threaten him.I know you will say that it would be hard for the ai to identify the messages...but there should be options like threat message so the ai would know before and it would respond declaring you war...it would be nice.

Well, since one less opponent is a drastical change, then I suppose that should you ally a comp. the AI will have an instant script to ally with someone as well since they otherwise will be run over. Maybe we could reintroduce the approval meter from Lotrealm2. Diplomacy could be a too deciding factor since basically the whole game circulates around war. However, no doubt it would add depth.

I've applied a bonus to this thread to insaneroach. His opinions might not be shared by everyone but is nevertheless interesting.
I removed some posts that were adding nothing to the topic being discussed, and/or had duplicated content in another more appropriate topic. It's normal janitoring of the thread.
I'm not sure if I removed five posts or some other amount. It's possible for members to remove their own posts also.
The deleted posts were about Linda's reflection about there ever being a H1 if I recall correctly. And I just realized that I was a bit sloppy and let two answers on that remain. So post count in this thread has been reduced by a further two.
