HeroesIV AI (repost)

People tend to diss the AI (artificial intelligence) of heroes III and so on. You guys got to consider the amazing complexity of heroes. Doing AI in games like quake, starcraft and such are ten-fold easier, simply because there are less variations of commands and battles. Heroes has been compared to chess many times, and agreeably heroes is even more complex with even more possibilities. To this day they try to improve computer chess AI.
So consider these words, and though AI isnt as 'great' as it could be, it is very significant as it stands. With the new Heroes engine in IV, i assume they will also be working on AI from scratch, so lets see how it goes

Actually I would say that creating an AI for heroes is much more complex then creating one for chess. Chess requires incredible amounts of thought and planning, but the range of options are much lower. You don't have 100s of pieces to keep track of, and don't have to worry about if you should spend your money producing pawns, or save your money to try and upgrade to bishops. All in all it's much more mathamatical and something the computer is much more capable of handling.
But H1 did have an amazing AI, and I do really miss it. Granted it was much simpler then the other games...but I'd almost prefer a simpler game with good AI. The AI for H3 however, while still not steller, is worlds above H2.
I'm just hoping that H4 does not become so complicated for the computer that it is unable to keep up at all.

well say what you want about homm3's ai but i think it's not all that bad.i know it's thrown a few curves at me on an occasion or 2 and helped open my eyes to a few inventive strategies. even after all the time i've spent playing the game it will still surprise me on occasion. i admit normally it's pretty predictable but i still remember when the comp cast expert counterstrike on it's vamp lords and gave me a hell of a time before i ran like a wooped puppy! i've used same strategy a few times since myself!

I agree that the AI for HOMM3 was excellent. In fact, I ended up taking the great AI for granted, and getting disappointed when playing games with lesser AI capabilities. I think that I would be quite happy if the AI for HOMM4 is the same as that for HOMM3, as it would still be leagues ahead of the rest.

New AI or Patched one? Posted 2-27-2001 09:48
Do you think a totally new AI will work better than the existent? HOMM3 AI could be more challenging just with a little patches. Examples: A human player will never attack an Ammo Cart with fifteen Black Dragons, but the AI does it. Maybe the computer players will be more dangerous in battle if they don't keep focused in the war machines and consider the speed of their enemy's units: killing the fastest enemy unit with your black dragons gives you one more chance to mantain battle initiative. Of course the actual AI has a lot of things to consider, but I'm only speaking of the "battle" AI engine.
Anyway, I suppose they are rewriting the AI cos the HOMM4 game is going to be far different (in heroes development, for instance) and it's not viable to reuse the existent AI.

Have to agree with some people here, the HOMM AI could use a little improvement. I think the problem is that the computer seems to judge attacks based on threat "immediacy" rather than total threat value. The biggest example of this is how the computer seems to attack archers and/or quick units first.

its a tough thing to think about Posted 3-15-2001 05:51
in heroes one, the ai was incredible, it would make me think i won and then BLAM would throw a curve ball and i would end up on the bench, and in heroes 3 i seem to keep on winning, and i know its not improvement in my play, because i still play heroes 1,
the only ai i think could work in battle, is to have a couple of different creature and spell comboes programed in (i would love for the comp to go on a black dragon armagedon spree), and check, could it in one attack kill a fast unit keeping the initiative in check, or would it be better to go to a crippling creature(high spell %) or have only one creature attack multipul retaliation creatures, and possibley taking speed into effect to insure its first attack on your creatures instead of them moveing as close as they can(within one block) and letting me strick the first blow,
i think more of a complex ai in combos, rather than more cheats for the comp to do, like some have said on other topics,
