Poll Question: Removal of underground?
According to a recent interview with Jon Van Caneghem, he said that the underground was to be removed in HommV.
JVC: Yeah, the Underground just didn't seem to add much except for cunfusion. It was... the way I originally designed it was, I made the Underground, and I think it was Heroes III it first appeared... a lot of our maps ran out of room for little treasure caches. So I said well, I could make this little Underground, you could go down and there would be a little bit bigger of an area where I could actually have a little treasure cache based where you were. The big maps it made sense, but the mapmakers went wild and turned it into an entire... thing, and now we had two maps instead of one, and it kind of went in a diredction it wasn't intended to.
Is his descision justified?

I say it should stay. But if it causes any problems and there is no other possible solution,it could go
but still I'd like it to remain

i would have underground rather than monoliths (if removal of undeground creates the need for additional monoliths).

Yep. The underground adds a whole new atmosphere to the map, and I don't think it creates any confusion at all.

Keep the Underground level, but allow for the Mapmaker to choose whether or not to have it in the first stages of creating a map, and during the process itself.

Before you create a map, it asks you if you want an underground. The underground must stay! Anyone remember that level in HeroesIII called,"Islands and Caves?" Play that level, after that you will understand why we need an underground. It adds character to the game.

read the jvc interview yesterday, and he said that the underground wasn't intended to be used as a way to create complicated mazes, and jvc didn't like the underground to be used to the extent we have seen it almost every time in homm games with underground.
the mazes with underground often made the game more challenging, but jvc was probably right, the way it added challenge by increasing map complexity did often feel artificial. although i wouldn't really like those maze maps to disappear completely, i think jvc had a solid point here.

I don't see a reason to remove a feature from the game. If you don't like it you can disable it. I made a few very cool maps with undergrounds where they were used as different worlds, distant lands or sky world. The more of these features in a game the better, because they are great for map makers!

I agree, the underground should be kept, it seems like a weak reason on his part to remove it. 'we got rid of it because map-maker used it all the time and they seemed to like it too much' (not a quote! but my basic analasis of his remarks) the fact that you couldnt fly over black areas was good, I liked the underground in general, howeve i feel they made the maps way to big on XL, if they could limit maps to say 10% of the overworld,or something like that to the underground making it impossible to make more then separate maps down there.

Not only that I wouldn't remove the underground but i would add the so-called "cloudy grounds".Anyone thought of some stairs taking right into the clouds? I mean, is this game called "Heroes" or "Heroes of...and MAGIC" ?

Well sometimes underground was useful, like for creating underground passages, burrows, etc. But when i play homm, i don't like to explore the dungeon Especialy, when an XL map has dungeon

I agree. You have as much time as you need, granted your playing on unlimited turns, so why would you make the game simpler? The reason the makers make HoMM turn-based is so that you can take your time and comprehend all that's going on around you. The underground just makes doing that all the more challenging. I think it should stay.
