My opinion about HOMM IV
While there might be an underlining familiarity present you have to deal with the numerous changes that have taken place, and question if those changes are for the best. While there might be an underlining familiarity present you have to deal with the numerous changes that have taken place, and question if those changes are for the best.
Not all changes are for the best. The ability for heroes to actively participate in combat is a real letdown. Heroes are now much more varied than before, as when you level the hero will get to choose usually between two and three different skills, and these skill combinations create the basis of advanced hero classes. Advanced hero classes opens up a wealth of special abilities depending on the type of class. The problem with heroes in combat though is the fact that for all their variations for the most part they are extremely weak, both from an offensive and defensive perspective. Factor in that the computer likes to take out a hero as quickly as possible and you’ll find yourself having to reload many a game because the computer stomped the hero you couldn’t lose before you could even think about retaliating.
In the end Heroes IV is a very attrective game, I found my self many times playing for 7-9 hours.
But generally it could've been a much better game.

Damn straight! Homm4 is mediocre at best, but it does show some interesting new features.
Nevertheless it could have been improved, if NWC had enough time.

Heroes IV is a collection game at best. It will never reach H3's playability and popularity. The major disappointment for me was the game's stupid story-line, with the apocaliptical destruction of the Old World and all.

Offtopic: Sorry for interrupting the discusion, but doesn't this thread belong in the lands of Axeoth?
Ontopic: Actually, i think that Homm4 is better than homm3. But that's only my opinion. Yes, i agree, Homm3 storyline was much more interesting, but this isn't the mani thing when we judge a game, imho.

In Your Humble Opinion
Quote: It will never reach H3's playability and popularity.
Playability - what do you mean? If you mean bugs, then I haven't seen them for a looong while (I have WoW 3.0 now). If you mean multiplayer - then maybe. I have heard about buggy multiplayer, though people (at least here in Russia) still like to play HoMM4 online.
If you mean gameplay - there are many differences, and in homm4 there are many things that are better than in homm3, IMHO. I can list them if you want.
As for popularity... You know, popularity doesn't always show the quality of the game. Some people played homm4 for a few hours, found out that good old homm3 tricks that they loved so much don't work in homm4 anymore, and threw the game away. I experienced that, too, but now I play homm3 and homm4 with the same pleasure. Maybe you should consider playing homm4 a little more? (Please excuse me if I'm wrong.)

You know, there are games like RPG where storyline is a very important part. In strategy games, storyline is not that important. Of course I have to admit that destroying Enroth was a mistake, IMHO, but storyline isn't what Heroes are built on. The stupid fight between Good and Evil (where Good wins, of course) took place in Restoration of Erathia - is that a better storyline than in homm4?..

Heroes IV for me was a pretty fine game, but it didn't give me the hyped fun and addiction that Heroes III (or even Heroes II, for that matter) brought. While I liked the welcome move of having heroes fight in battle, the rest of the changes, especially concerning town growth and development and creature numbers/levels, are'nt that good. Four levels of creatures were way too less, and town building could be done a little too quickly. The Fog Of War was detremential to my style of play, and thankfully only through a weak AI was I able to win.
I agree that Heroes IV was not as popular as Heroes III, and I can say why.

Actually, that is extremely sad (IMO). I have been playing HOMM4 for multiple hours per day for at least six months (including delivered scenarios / campaigns / and many downloaded games).
VERY good value game to me. I've had WoW for at least a month without bothering to install it, waiting until I finish playing the downloaded maps I have.

I still recon the game could've been much better,
If not all those spells you have to lern to get to grandmaster somthing.
And the play ability of the hero, hes waaaaaaaaay to envolved in the bettle.
I mean i'ts nice that the hero is fighting next to his soldiers but i'ts too much.
But I still love it.

How in h377 could you "finish" the whole game in 5 days? My guess is you didn't give it much of a chance. I have been playing Heroes 4 almost constantly since its release more than a year ago; and I might add, STILL ENJOYING IT!
I can't imagine what everyone expected from Heroes 4 - In my opinion, it is a fine game. In fact, I'll go as far as to say better than most of the other junk which litters the shelves of software stores these days.
It is all this kind of outrageous negativity which probably drove 3DO to Chapter 11. If you all think you can create a better game, then go ahead. It'd be interesting to see what kind of "crap" you can come up with that would be better than, or even match the quality & playability of Heroes 4.

I agree that HOMM3 is "better" than HOMM4. I just can't/don't understand why everyone complains & whines so much about HOMM4, when it is also a good game in its own right.

ok.. I have both H3 (all expans) and H4 (all expans). I play both games, but I can't understand, what is so special and better in H3 ? More creatures ? More Casteles ? And.... more creatures again ? H4 is good for an eye... It has good map editor, good musics, nice creatures, I have found that H4 is more enjoyable to play and I still play it... (since release) without playing any single game...
