Lose the H4, bring back the H3
imho, h4 ruined the whole series. H3 was the best. Altho h4 introduced the new graphics and such, it still lacked the heroes quality of game. I suggest the 3DO add more towns, to make a wider variety, and bring back the upgrading units as in h3 --> h1.
Thats my opinion... I never played h4 more than twice... I atm play h3

I agree
i agree H4 was the worst of them all.
H1 had a few towns (dont know how many) and 5 levels of creatures.
H2 had even more towns and 6 levels of creatures.
H3 had even more towns (9) and 7 levels of creatures.
H4 has less towns (6) and 4 levels of creatures.
Not to mention in H4 the lack of creatures, spells and other stuff. In H4 like 30% of all the creatures are neutral. Their are no hero speciaties. H4 has less of everthing and doesnt have what H3 had. I hope H5 will attempt to be better than H3.

To hell with HOMM3! HOMM2 was the best overall and nothing will change my mind.
I actually liked HOMM4. For one, the scripting system was simple and very easy to understand. The game was also realistic in that there wouldn't be very many monsters left from Erathia/Enroth, and that not many monsters would feel inclined to trust themselves to any sort of government for a while. It's sort of the same in the real world.
HOMM4 was about the post-cataclysm world. Everything was new, no real alliances had been formed between humanoids and monsters, and some of the old alliances had been broken.
The storyline was basicly about how Axeoth got started. It doesn't make for an "amazing" storyline like in HOMM2, but at least it makes sense chronologically.

Long live HOMM4.
Suprise, surprise, but HOMM4 and HOMM3 have approximately and equal amount of unique creatures. The creatures from HOMM3 perhaps looked more in number, which was because of the upgrades. I do not consider upgrades unique creatures. The only thing they do is taking away the value of the original creatures.
And let me just turn the argumenting and the complaining around:
HOMM3 is bad because it doesn't have anything that HOMM4 has.
-The towns always have the same creatures when you play them.
-Heroes are just boring puppets standing next to the battlefield.
-All towns have the same magic.
-People have to modify their games because some heroes are terribly overpowered.
-The terrain is flat, boring and repetitive.
-No scripts in the maps.
And most important:
-There is nothing in HOMM3 that HOMM2 doesn't have, except for hero specialities.
I think everyone gets my point.
Take the best parts from all games, add some completely new things and HOMM5 will be the best game of the series. That is, if it ever gets on the market.

H1 had 4 towns and 5 level of creatures (total: 20)
H2 had 6 towns and 6 level of creatures (total: 36)
H3 had 9 towns and 7 level of creatures (total: 63)
H4 had 6 towns and 4 (but 8 creatures per castle + creature portal - 8) level of creatures (total: 56)

I don't feel that lack at all. In H3 threre were more creatures, but some of them really sucked and they had upgrades, which IMO was not that good idea...
LOLOL !!!! Lack of spells in Heroes 4 ! H3 had 70 spells... And H4 has 150 spells. I don't see the lack.
Define what is "other stuff", please...
Quote: In H4 like 30% of all the creatures are neutral.
They aren't Neutral, they have aligments too. Caravans helps to take them into the castle.
Quote: Their are no hero speciaties.
Good ridnace I'll say. Heroes specialties was annoying, when you had a good hero, but an awfull face... (nothing personal Tazar... ). And now there are class specialties, so I don't see the need of creatures or skill spec.
Quote: H4 has less of everthing and doesnt have what H3 had. I hope H5 will attempt to be better than H3.
Describe what what is that "everything". I hope that H5 will be more simmilar to all heroes series, not only to H3.

H1 had 6 levels like Heroes2. Think you forgot about neutrals, although they weren't that many in H1. Also, H2 had i believe something like 21 upgrades or something. But since you didn't include the H3 upgrades i suppose that doesn't matter. Something which I by the way completely agree with. Most of them aren't "new creatures" in that sense so they shouldn't be counted. Must commend NWC for their desicion to go with the H1 way of no upgrades, and instead taking each creature with the intention of making everyone special and useful. Can't say they put it to perfection, still the idea is good.

Well, it depends on what you want. The castle views from HOMM3 were undoubtly better, but that is because they used a fixed artwork. It looked good, but was always the same. I remember playing a Tower town in the middle of the desert. According to map and story, it was really hot everywhere, but inside the town, there was still snow and ice. At least they fixed that problem in HOMM4. The downside to that was that with the changing landscapes and choice of buildings, the towns had to become more fixed in position, just to make everything fit. That took away some of the eyecandy. Although, the towns don't look too bad. What's wrong with the Necropolis on lava, or an underground Asylum?

Why not ? It is more realistic.. Maybe necormancer is an efreet or a Demon... or a Wizard.. Maybe he likes cold atmosphere... Maybe Necro heroes is conquering swamp lands. I think it was a BIG step forward, when the town screens began to change accordin terrain, where that town stands.

I think everyone agrees that H3 has better looking castles (and not only better looking but better form any point of view - caravans could make a small difference). That fixed artwork can be easily adapted, I think. It's fairly easy to design a piece of land and then put on some snow or lay down some lava rivers across it. Though they did it in H4, the towns look horible because of the buidings (which don't even look like building, let alone their placement. It's a lot more boring than H3.
An idea could be this: in H5 every town should adapt to the climate it's in. But, there should be an exception: some towns, like wizards' and necromancers' should have a special building, a sort of Magical Shield Tower, and that buiding could add a magical protection to the troops defending it and also change the weather accordingly to the troops desire - the wizards would prefer their beloved snows, while the necros would love to fight on a barren land. So, it would be changeable,.... but also adaptable to be fixed.
