Poll Question: "Gentlemen's Rules"
When i play on zone with many of the same ppl, be it random or fixed maps and we discuss what rules we gonna use (altho i find it quite funny and contradictory in a non-endorsed rules tourney) we usually just cut to the chase by confirming "gentlemens rules". But what does that mean? Well its not a list of do's and dont's, its basically a confirmation of "fair gameplay and sportsmanship" which we will abide by. But what i really want is to find out what u think is oki and considered fair and sporting in a H3 game, because to me, there seems to be a split of oppinion about what is acceptable and what is just considered to be lame tactics.
Its also quite enlightening to hear some of the 4/5 year toh vets take on these, as they also seem to differ greatly in there attitudes towards what is good or not so good.
"CASTLE SITTING"
Do u mind if ur opponent will only fight in his castle, regaurdless as to what troops or stats r involved? does it make a diference to u ? Do u only att opponent when u r sure u can win even if he does retreat back to castle ? Or will u never att an enemy in a castle siege because u regaurd it as to much of an unfair advantage for defender ?
"HIT AND RUN"
Is this a tactic that u mind? do u regaurd this as a tactic at all ?
"SUMMON EARTH" - "BLIND"
U think these are lame spells or not? and why ? I have seen many players lately complaining bout these 2 spells and the use of them, so what r ur oppinions?
Wish i coulda made a poll for each of these but i cant, so i guess u just gonna vote on what u think is the most important lol.

none wrong with these tactics
if a guy wants to be imprisoned to his castle while i can roam free, its his problem. btw, in medieval times the maing way of castle siege was to sit around until the guy inside gets weak to death. in HOMM, you can bring reinforcements from creature dwellings, while guy inside can only use whats available in castle. '
hit and run? go ahead if you can afford it. at minimum 2500 gold per hit its the pastime of the wealthy only.
and if you happen to blind me and i cannot dispel it, then i truly suck and deserve to lose anyway. and while summoning is mean and boosts your army, so is chain lightning, or mass bless or mass slow or whatever...

hit and run, easily
just fight a guy with arch angels and implo who uses hit n run and u'll fast become aware of how fast someone can destroy a really fun game. money u might say... 2500 is NOTHING. Only needs like 10 in spell power to take out loads of your armies without u being able to do anything

a game of homm2
I remember a good old game with my roomate on homm2, his forces were far more powerful, and I was camped behind my castle. His power force was his huge number of hydras... I had blind... so I would blind him and the shooters/turrets would hit his hydra group. And I repeated it again and again, until his vastly superior force was smashed.
he was pissed of course, but that was the name of the game... he would have done it too, if the roles were reversed.

My theories changed over time.
When I started heroes, I didn't care about rules, then losin to H&R several times it made me angry, so then i started wanting several rules, but now that I think about it...I prefer no rules UNLESS it is a certain map I know, and know that certain rules are needed.
Being a map maker, I know how I designed some maps, and sure they may be fun, but with their design, people can find ways to abuse things.. But best thing to do is not put yourself in a position to get ran over by something you dislike.
I will throw in..maps with no relics and fewer artifacts solve many of these problems. If a guy hit and runs me week 3 with 250 damage lightning bolt..big deal? but with the maps most yall play, if they hit and run you, its with 2000 dam chain lightning or 5000 dam implosion.

hey Max we should play HG2 one day .. i will
..first: Summon your boat away.
...second: use DD in underground to get to fobidden arts and your Utopia.
...third: hit and run u to death with middle tavern.
...fourth: Break our "No diplo"-rule we made before game as TOH is a "no-rule-tournament" and get all the joiners.
... fifth: Sit in YOUR castle and hide behind my Blackies although my troups are bigger, my spells are better and my stats are higher.
and finally: Destroy your balista when u attack with your fortress troups.
Of course i will report you with low honor as i expect u to do the same.
Xarfax1
PS: This is all unrealistic u think?!? ...well all this happened into the last games i had recently... not to mention the guy that had dropped before he made serious fights ..only to come back 15 mins later.

Itīs not at all gentleman-like IMO, if one declares people who share his ideas about how a Heroes 3 game should be played to be gentlemen. That implies an insult to everyone who has different views on the game.
Many supposed unbalancers, which people are so happy to ban from the game, can very well be the perfect balancers. Iīve given reasons for my view in the Library thread "Standard random rules".
As far as Iīm concerned, I rather get hitīnrun and redrushed than killed because my opponent has pulled the best possible relics from a Utopia. Or 10 Angels from three Griffin Cons that stand next to his starting Castle. But thatīs just me, to everyone their own. In this season I accepted 99% of the rules that were suggested to me, no matter if I found them to be sensible or not.
When a whiner loses a game in an unusual way, chance is good that a new rule becomes born. Thatīs why I propose the subject of this thread to be renamed into Whinermensī Rules.

For my almost 3 yrs of playing when I first started I had n o rules at all for random or made maps.
after about season 4 when i first actually played in TOH I had some prob with cartography & had that as my first rule in TOH.
my first game on a 1-1 with Tel I made thr Grail rule an absolute must after he found it like week 2.
H&R & Red rusg basically recently came in affect from other players consideration & I never do it anyways so i dont mind.
Dip is up to them I can play with or without it.
I have always been a fair person 7 will give restarts week 1 & even later if it is neccsasary (yea I spelled it wrong so what ).
I got so piss3ed off losing all my games (really close games too) to Amazon King over DD & Fly, totally killed a great game so pissed as I was banned those spells, at least to where you cant threaten your oponent.
If you want to use them to get treasure whatever is fine by me I wont use those cursed spells.
Hill fort can be a game killer & usually quicly add that myself hehe.
4 min turns or higher which I prefer no time limit is because i dont have a fast com & cant hang with 2 min & lose alot of turns which can be irritating.
I think that covers anythang, basically talk to me & I am on your side & will work with you on any problems in the game.

Why not remove every part of strategy in the entire game? Let's not use real strategy.
Castle Sitting.
Two can play this game, IMO. I would personally refuse to attack their town if they were castle sitting. I view this tactic as unwilling to complete the game. I wouldn't mind this too much really. If they don't want to finish, then I don't have to finish either. I can spend my time playing someone else. Now if I am obviously much stronger than they are, I would understand. I have done this before against people like Frank. Gave me a whoopin too. On the other hand, maybe you should get better at attacking a town if it bothers you that much. That's why there are spells like chain lightning, meteor shower, teleport. Come on think of something. The reason people castle sit is so that you'll attack them when your unprepared. If your really dumb enough to attack when you are prepared for a siege, then why are you complaining about a loss.
Hit and Run
Maybe if you people pulled your head out of your ass this wouldn't happen to you. btw, how often does castle give implosion anyway? If the person is good enough at hit and run to still get you anyway. Hats off. Maybe someone should have got resistance?
Summon to Death
If they made a hero to do this specifically, then wouldn't it be just about as fair as using Tazar?
Blind
This is a level 2 spell. Maybe someone wasn't prepared for a simple spell. Let's see. How can we counter this? anti-magic, cure (w/ water magic), dispel, magic mirror, pendant of second sight, resistance, cursed grounds. I'm sorry, but if you really don't have any other way of stopping this spell, then you can still wait a turn and cast all the other spells that are BETTER than blind.

You have missed the point by approximatley 40 miles...these rules go to make the game more enjoyable! I dont find a castle sitter with 600 spell points going blind/blind/summon/summon/blind/blind/res/res/res/implo/implo/res/res/res really fun....play the game your own way and leave the people- who actually like to enjoy the game with the rules- alone.

What would you do if you had a hero with 600 spell points? I wouldn't castle sit, but I would certainly use my spells. And with the maps I play, I've never seen any hero with 600 spell points. I like to play open nonrelic maps like bfh.
Thanks for your points rychen. I understand that some rules probably are necessary of some maps, (I changed my mind) because we are playing the game much of the time under scenarios that were not intended to occur. Like heroes with 600 spell points with stats like 22,34,56,39. They were intending however maybe something like 200 spell point with stats like 22 4 8 10. Something maybe Crag_Hack would get with maybe a relic on him.
Really the reason I like to avoid extra rules is to avoid arguements. I don't want to make some rule to have it be broken and then lose because they didn't follow the agreement and in TOH, they ignore these pre-game agreements. I've tried to impliment rules in the past and I feel it can take more away than it gives sometimes.

the creature becomes unblinded the minute you are attacked. I don't think it's that effective.
btw, I have been castle sitted. I just waited until they got bored. I'll never get bored when I can post here between turns or during my turn for all I care.

It is an aesthetic choice then. I do not know much at all about bfh or desert war or things like this, but I do know randoms. And I do know what unbalances them totally, without relying on generator luck. The 4 big ones are diplo/fly/d/d/cartographer, they just have to be banned in my opinion for a decent game. Personally my only extensions of these rules are no necro and no hillfort. I would never ban heroes or tactics, but certain tactics I certainly would not enjoy and probably wouldnt play that player again if their philosophy was to castle sit with a magic hero and summon to death.

desert war isn't what I would call open. There isn't much strategy as it can be played only a couple ways and since there are lots of random artifacts on this map, this game has too much luck for me on a turn-based strategy game.
If there is any rule for this map, it would be to play another map.
I would agree with you. I don't play a lot of randoms, because the few times I did, my side had all star axis, while his side had all good stuff.
