Too few artifacts....?
Well, I did'nt play H4 for so long, but I noticed, that there was not many artifacts. All looked like each other, and were not too good. Compare H4 with H3...
H3 artifacts are raelly nice, and there is a lot of them.
I hope they will bring the "transmute" possibility in patch or expansion. Transmute makes you able to transmute artifacts, into good artifacts.
fx= (H3, shadow of death) Amulet of the undertaker+Vampire cowl+Necromancers boots= Cloak of the undead king= Now oyu also get zombies, wraiths and liches when winning a battle.
fx= Bow of elven cherrywood+ Bowstring of the unicorns mane+ Angelfeather arrows= Bow of the sharpshooter= No range penalty and you can shoot although there is a creature beside you.
and 1 more
fx= Skull helmet+ Rib cage+ sword of the dead knight+ Shield of yawning death= Armor of the damned= In battle, the armor automaticly casts curse, slow, weaknees and misfortune on the enemies.
Thats cool, and should be in H4 too.

You're right, there are no combined artifacts.
And yes,I miss those present in Heroes III,but not that much to make me play it again.I like Heroes IV best.
And it's easier in Heroes IV to achieve a skill that when reaches Grandmaster will provide
the effects of some combined artifacts in Heroes III
(for example Statue of Legion - 50 % growt vs Nobility
Grandmaster which does the same thing,
Armor of the damned vs Grandmaster Necromancy which is almost the same etc.)
In Heroes III you have to "work"hard to get all the artifacts parts and it will take you
a lot a time, that when you finally get them, that is IF you get them,it does not make any
difference,in most cases.

indeed there is a lack of artifacts...the artifacts in h4 are almost useless comparing to those in h3...they must put those back in the game...and eliminate the blacksmith artifacts...which are completly useless....i;ve never bought an artifact from the blacsmith....only potions1
the complicated and useful artifacts from h3 must be reintroduced

Although there are a lack of usefull artifacts in heroes IV it does not degrade the gameplay to a level of unenjoyment. I still find that the game is enjoyable even with a limited amount of usefull artifacts. I also agree that the blacksmiths is a usless structure and serves no real purpose in the game, other than to sell people armour and swords and crossbows, which you can find better kinds of on the adventure map.

He does have a point. I for one didn't like the artifacts that could allow someone to walk around with one artifact and one gremlin and still be able to eliminate a player's top army with on swift armageddon. I, of course, am making a direct referance to the Armageddon's Blade. The combination artifacts such as the Cloak of the Undead King, Power of the Dragon Father, and the Cornucopia are not much better.

I don't think the H4 artifacts and items are so useless. If your artifact slots are still unused, you can buy a staff for your spellcaster so your spells are very cheap, or some armour, a shield and a sword, and your defense ratings allow you to take twice as much damage with your hero (if you have no combat skill yet). All that for a few hundred gold, or a few thousand.
And I think artifacts that give your entire army +20% or more extra defense, are good. You can compare it to +4 to your defense skill in H3.

There aren't really too few artifacts in Heroes 4. In fact, there is roughly the same amount of artifacts in Heroes 4 as there was in Heroes 3, minus the combination artifacts. However, many of these artifacts are not much use for the hero especially if s/he is not a combat hero like an archer or a barbarian. However, I do agree that I miss the combination artifacts, which are noticeably absent in Heroes 4. I hope that in Heroes 5 that combination artifacts are included in the original version.

You know what I think the problem with Heroes IV is? In their hurry to finnish the game, 3DO killed it's diversity.
Fewer artifacts is one thing, but that which annoys me most is that no matter what type of hero you have (I'm referring to the main hero) you just have to pick Combat as one of his skills or else you're toast.
There were no vital skills like this in H3, none that would give you such a big disadvantage by not picking it. Let's take Earth Magic for example: sure it was awesome for a magic-hero, but you could live without it (pick Air instead). Take Offense for a might hero - 15% more Damage - super-dooper, but you could compensate not having it by let's say Armorer & Leadership.
In H4, without Combat, you'll have your whimpy hero squashed before the first turn ends!
I hope I made a point with all my blabbering.

Yes combat is considered vital, that's why it is offered every three upgrades.
I think you need magic resistance too, at all times. So that should be offered also, even if you are no combat-advanced class like fireguard, paladdin, assassin, etc.
Maybe that is already the case. I'm not sure.
You should first get about 3 combat upgrades, then sometimes combat, sometimes magic resist.

No, Combat is not a vital skill for any type of hero, it's a vital skill only for might heroes and even then you can give your might hero some magic skills to turn him/her into a semi-magic hero. I normally pick another magic skill for my magic hero or I go for Tactics, Nobility or Scouting as well. I rarely use combat on my spellcaster.
Having said that, the Combat skill is vital to heroes who will spend a lot of time attacking the enemy.
