it most certainly should be. in fact, i hate it so much, i think it should be refined to certain areas. there should be smoking areas, not non smoking areas. we have our rights to live, even if you smokers dont value yours. i understand its hard to quit. i understand that it is psychologically addictive and its not the persons fault to keep smoking. but we dont want to breathe in the nicotine, tar and arsenic that you chose to pick up.

i moved from australia this january, australia where cigarrette advertisements are banned to be shown anywhere. i moved to japan where tobacco ads are dominant everywhere, cigarrettes can be bought off the street in vending machines, and all there is to stop underage smoking is a warning smacked on the packet "must be over 18. smoking kills." living in tokyo, just simply going about daily life, you would inhale the equivalent amount of air pollution as you would smoking a pack of cigarrettes a day. 50% of all males in japan are heavy smokers. 50% of males not adult males. that is a crazy figure, and although they have every right to endanger their lives, but their smoking most of the time infringes on the non smoking population's health. i dont want to be diagnosed with cancer!

i dont think smoking should be banned either. alcohol was once banned, that didnt go well. try something thats one of the most mentally addictive habits in the world, not to mention how many people participate. it would lead to the taking of tabacco underground to be traded by drug lords, so i think keep it safe and keep it legal. the only good thing about cigarettes that makes it being legal ok, is that it doesnt make you stupid like most drugs. marijuana is dangerous to other ppl coz it lowers their reaction speed etc, and if theyre driving... but cigarettes dont alter your state of mind while under the influence. so smoking can be allowed, but it should be highly controlled and fenced off to certain areas.

ratmonky seems to have brought this topic up again

but i will rebut this:
Quote:
if you really want to live those extra 6 minutes of your life

its about 6 minutes from your life expectancy per cigarette. but passive smoking in a bar is like smoking a whole pack at least, because there is no filter. that means two hours from your life every time you walk into a place where people are smoking. how many times have you done that?

once again; keep it safe, keep it legal.

btw, here's something funny i found

Cigarette Warnings for Men

Recent Canadian government research has shown that cigarette smoking not only impairs sexual ability, it actually causes shrinkage of the male sexual "equipment."

Wow! If that is true, we need to get the word out ASAP! Maybe the warning on the cigarette packs should be updated to reflect this new information. How about something like this:

* Warning!: These cigarettes are king size -- how about you?

* Warning!: Smoking sections in restaurants aren't the only things getting smaller.

* Warning!: If you don't reduce your smoking, your smoking will reduce you.

* Warning!: Smoking may lead to ridicule on your honeymoon.

* Warning!: Smoke rises, but you may not.

* Warning!: Second-hand smoke can be harmful to children -- That is... if you're capable of conceiving any.

* Warning!: Cigarettes get shorter the more you puff -- so do you.

* Warning!: How can you enjoy a smoke afterwards, if there's no before?

* Warning!: The only thing left after a smoke is a dead stub.

* Warning!: Don't throw lit cigarettes in the urinal -- you might not have the range to put them out

Hey good news ppl! (at least for me ) From next year onwards 2006 my country will ban smoking in all coffeshops and eating houses and if there is to be a smoker's area then it must be well ventaliated, the smoke not going to the non smoker's area. Haha already my cousin is complaining cause he's a smoker and everytime I go out with him to drink he always smoke which always irritates me. All pubs and nightspots will follow suit in the year 2007. Yay now I can enjoy my meal and drinks without smoke in my face. This is a controversial move, you know. In case you were wondering, my country is Singapore.

~edit~ No, draco, I didnt steal the idea anywhere. My country was already discussing over possible banning of smoking in some public places.

I think it should be banned in public places,
before few years the smoke wasnt so bad for me when i was with smokers but now Im alergic to it,I hate when people arond me are smoking,Its really killing me.
And I think it is really not IN now, many people are starting to give up smoking which I know,a good beginning definitely.
Im not saying to stop smoking att all but really respect those there are non-smokers.

I agree everyone should have the right not to breath second hand smoke.  In Canada here (or more precise the province of Onatrio) smoking will be banned in all public places in another year or so.  At the moment its left up to cities to regulate it.

What really bothers me is that i pay huge taxes on every pack and im not allowed to smoke outside my house.  Doesnt seem to bother any of the none smokers (or at least they do not object to the discrimination of smokers).  I remember calling into a talk show on tv in Toronto about this very issue.  I explained that i understand (and agree) why people dont want to be subjected to second hand smoke.  So as a solution i proposed having smoking bars only (or whatever outdoor venue you want to apply here).  The response from the head health official was "Hey our long term goal is to wipe out smoking completely. so your idea is just not going to happen".  You got my tax money.  Its put into the general revenue accounts.  Its used to fund everything from social programs to the judicial system to policing to schooling etc. ectc.   But then i get treated like a third class citizen.   This is totally unfair.

Since you people think sucking in second hand smoke violates your right to a clean environment ( again i agree) then you should stop doing things that pollute the air for me.  I dont have a car.  I ride a bike wherever i go or use the transit system.   We get health warnings all the time in the summer (smog days they are called) and we are told not to do anything strenuous.  Thats not fair for me to suck up all those fumes caused by people driving.   So i expect all you people that object to smoking to stop driving and ride a bike or take the transit system.  Of course you wont cause then it actually affects your life.   Convictions and rights are often championed by people that arent inconvenienced by them.  Once the effects do apply to an individual in an adverse way, attitudes change in a hurry.

Oh you say you dont drive a car   Then lets talk about the biggest polluter to the air i breath.  Coal fired generating stations.   Often during the summer we get pleas to reduce electricity consumption. Particularly from people who use air conditioners.   Well if it requires the coal fired generaters to give you electricty then they should be banned as well.

Bottem line is there are plenty of things in life that cause ill effects on our life (cigarette smoke, power generation, pesticides for lawns, cell phones etc.)

It just seems to me people are willing to deprive someone of their right (the sale and taxation gives me the right to smoke) to do something they enjoy as long as it doesnt affect them.  Do something that affects them, then watch and listen to all the complaining.  Like im doing now

My opinion

I've always been told that smoking is bad for your health. I keep that in my mind, but at the same time I can't understand why so many people get hooked on smoking. It feels good? I don't see how a temporary escape from life's problems is worth a bad case of addiction and health risks. I always thought people were aware of lung cancer; I guess some people believe they can live through it. No matter what people tell me, I see way too many negatives points in smoking for it to be worthwhile.

I'm suffering from quite a lot of horrible secondary smoke at the university. The stuff smells awful; the addiction must truly be powerful on people if the smoke smells that bad.

Please excuse me if I'm offending any smokers in the house. These are my personal views.

I think I'd be more surprised if they banned outdoor smoking here, than if they instituted obligatory smoking for everyone. Its not a coincidence that tobacco is a main national crop.
If it happens that u want to go out at night in a cafe or a disco and its indoors, u better get ready to suck in tons of nicotine clooudies, cos u wont find any non-smoking places. I've got no problems with that cos my parents smoke 5 packages cigarettes a day together, so i practically live in the environment, although i dont smoke myself.
Should smoking be banned in public? Indoors yes, outdoors, dont think so.
I agree completely with the Canadian buddy.

You better ask your parents to cut it down to at least 40. It's for their own good..

I believe that smoking should be banned in public places.

Here in Austarlia smoking is prohibited in schools, most parts of bars, govrenment buildings, food outlets and in the car and home. But i feel thatit is still not enough because people are still alowed to smoke in parts of bars, outdoor pools, outdoor restaurant areas etc.

I hate it when I am at the bus shelter waiting for the bus in peace and then someone next to you lights up a smoke, or when iam at a restaurant and i want to sit outside you always find someone who is someking. I work in the food industry and I find it the greatest offence to have someone smokeing while you are trying to eat and trying to indulge in the great aromas.

Why should non-smokers have to suffer the affects of passive smokeing because of some inconciderate smoker who wants to enjoy killing themselves with their cancer sticks. I say make a better ban on somking or at least raise the prices of cigaretts to make it more dificult for them to want to somke and it will hopefuly convince them to quite smoking, which will save their lives and others from cancers.
