Noob questions

Actually, I'm not a newbie to the game - only to this forum.

I see people talking about random games?  How do I get a random game?  I'm playing on just the basic Homm3.  I've got the Final Chronicals add-ons, but I can't get them to load into WinXP.  Do I need them?  Do I need something else?

During single-player combat, the enemy obviously knows how far I can move, because it often moves its armies just out of reach of my units.  Is there a way that I can get the same information about him?  (Ya, I know...  like I really need even MORE of an advantage over the AI.)

One of the most annoying things in the game is when you first enter into the combat screen.  There is this music bit that it plays to announce the start of combat, and you can't do ANYTHING until it finishes.  Is there a way to disable that, or maybe to replace the music file with something shorter?

And from the "dirty rotton cheater" dept...

When your hero levels up, he gets a choice of a couple skill upgrades.  If he's got an open slot, he'll be offered at least one "basic" skill that he doesn't have.  Are these selections pre-ordained?  If I've got a hero that has the opportunity to visit a level-up tree, can I save my game, see what the tree offers him, and if I don't like it, continue on with the game and let him level-up naturally a few turns later?  And might the skill selections be different?  I've just GOT to have that advanced earth skill.

1. You have to install at least the addon "Armageddonīs Blade" to play random maps.

2. Thereīs a hint in your help file, where you can read how far your heroe can travel in one round. It depends on the slowest unit in your stacks, on the ground your riding, on artifacts you got (gloves, boots of speed), visiting stables rises your logistic, and finally your secondary skill LOGISTIC. All this information is known by th AI, so he knows how far you can get. If you know all of the information above from the AI, you will know how far he can go as well

3. Set the music on lowest level in the system options

4.If you come a level up, the next choice between the two secondary skill IS GIVEN!. If you wait and not try it on that level-up tree, but in the next fight, you will get the SAME choice. So if you donīt like the choice, you will have to go to a witch hut and learn what he tells you. Or you can go to an university, where you can choose between 4 secondary skills!

Is this something else that I have to install Armageddon's Blade for?  I don't have that in my System Options.  I have:

Hero Speed
Enemy Speed
Map Scroll Speed
Video Quality
Music Volume (I have the slider all the way to the left)
Effects Volume

Show Move Path
Show Hero reminder
Quick Combat
Video Subtitles
Town Building Outlines
Spell Book Animation
(The above are all checked except Quick Combat)

on annoying music

you can replace the music with a shorter one. all heroes 3 music tracks are stored in a separate directory as mp3 files. very comfy! you just find the file with the right heading (could even try playing it to be sure) and then paste a different mp3 file that simply does "bong" under the same name.

I actually tried that.  I played every track in that directory, but it wasn't in there.  Somehow it seems to be built into the core program.

ALL music for the game is stored in the "mp3" directory. Also all combat musics (named "combatmusicxx")... Just find the one you want to replace and then - do it

I understand what you're saying, but you've got to believe me.  I've listened to EVERY mp3 in that directory, and this piece of music isn't in there.

Youīre right, the sound at the begin of every battle is saved in the data directory. Itīs called Heroes3.snd
You canīt change this file. But why is this such a big problem for you? This sound takes about 3 or 4 seconds!
Couldīnt you stand this time and wait?

If I can't change it, I'll live with it.  I've been "standing" it for years.  BTW - it's 6 seconds, and it's annoying.  Not only the wait, but the fact that once the wait is over, the cursor doesn't change until you move the mouse.

I play with the sound off. (How does the sound possibly help in a turn-based game?)  So once combat starts, I generally know what I'm going to do within a second.  Now I've got to sit there and wiggle the mouse for five seconds while this foolish music plays.  Over the course of a game, it happens hundreds of times.  It's the ONLY place in the game where you're forced to wait.

simple enough....turn of the music, and the delay will be gone....but then again....is sacrifising the music worth 6 seconds every fight`?

There is no way to turn off the music.  You can turn DOWN the music, but it's no different than turning down volume on your speakers.  The game is still going to take the time and play it.

As far as "sacrificing the music" goes...  After you've played a couple hundred games, it gets old.

then u havent actually tried it enchant, rather than chat here, try it and u will see that it works. In the game settings reduce the volume to nothing. Then the time taken up by music is gone. Test this on a 2 way portal. With sound on, u will pop out slowly to other side then back again slowly. With sound off u can got back and forwards multiple times a second.

Ok - I've figured it out.  Everyone was saying that I should turn the music down.  I've had it down to nothing since the first day I installed the game.  It's the other volume - the "effects" volume that controls this.  But the bottom line is that I've taken care of the problem.  Thanks!
