I've tried to get Heroes 4 to work on 64-bit Vista. I even installed VirtualPC and tried to get it to run Windows XP, but VirtualPC won't let me make a HD larger than 1 GB. Well, it will, but unfortunately, it won't recognise its size, meaning I can't install Windows XP on it. I don't want to reinstall Windows Vista 32-bit just for this, masterpiece though it is.

I don't know about virtualPC, but Sun's free virtualbox can handle larger HDD's without problems. Althought I don't know about performance for games. And I'm not sure I even want to use virtual machines just to hide my operating system from the evil the copy protection.

Sorry to reactivate this thread, but I actually managed to run Homm4 on Vista x64 (and Server 2008 x64) without any virtual machines. It seems that problem is caused by display driver (in my case, at least). So I rinstalled driver, and used Standard VGA Graphics Adapter (comes with windows) and it worked perfectly. Unfortunately, you can do nothing else with this driver, so I just installed my old driver back. I hope this will help someone.

I had Heroes IV WoW running perfectly on my big AVADirect laptop before it died on me a few days ago. I was running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bits. I have noted the specs of this system at the bottom of this post.
Unfortunately I am now unable to get the game to run on my new laptop, which runs Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bits. The smaller CPU and video card on this new laptop may have something to do with my failure, but I have been thinking it has to do with the fact that my new laptop's monitor does not support 1280x1024 resolution, though it does support the game's other two resolutions (800x600 & 1024x768). I have been trying to get help on this with another thread that I have started.
My former laptop's specifications:
Manufacturer: AVADirect Custom Computers
Model: Clevo D900F Core i7 Gaming Notebook
OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit edition, version 6.0.6002
Service Pack 2 Build 6002
Motherboard: Clevo D900F revision 1.0. Chipset: Intel X58, revision 12. Southbridge: Intel 82801JR (ICH10R).
CPU: Intel Core i7 975 Extreme Quad-Core 3.33 GHz
Video: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M, 1GB GDDR3
Memory: Kingston 6GB (3 x 2GB)
Display: 17.1” TFT WUXGA LCD, widescreen, active matrix, native and max resolution = 1920x1200

Works in Safe Mode
I just thought I would send in my two cents...
I had the same problem with the 'Blue Screen of Death' and the only way I could get it to work (short of re-installing XP, which I no longer have) was to run it in safe mode. Saddly I have no sound , so it is very dissapointing, but at least it runs...
Hope this helps

Can't install at all?
hi!
I've been trying to install HOMM2 gold and HOMM4 on my new computer. I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit with SP2 and I can not get the games to install. When I load the CDs they autorun ok, but when I click on the install option it thinks for a few seconds and then nothing happens. The autorun screen is still there and it doesn't load or install or anything. I've tried exploring the cds and selecting compatibility mode (all of them) but it doesn't have any effect. Has anyone ever had something like this happen? What can I do?
Thanks,
Ambam

I installed Heroes I thru 4, WoG and Equilibrus on Windows 7 without a single hitch. I did'nt even have to mess with compatibility settings or nothing. All games play in full screen and everything. I don't understand all the fuss. And I was waiting for problems to happen. I did'nt get a single one. And I even installed them with the 3DO CD's. Not one error message.

It's not that difficult to understand if you read the thread. Vista SP0 and 1 bluescreened on Heroes 4. SP2 and later (read: Windows 7) fixed this problem. Keep in mind the thread was started in 2007, long before we had all these fancy pants service packs and thus were only able to play HoMM 4 on XP.
As with most such problems, this was most likely caused by Heroes 4's excessive yet still useless copy protection, a problem that will be even worse when trying to play many of today's games 10 years from now (especially recent Ubisoft games).
I don't understand why there isn't more fuss

Seriously i think Vista is good for nothing if you ever try to play some games whit your computer. Or use some USB portals or use any other program other than web browsers (tough even that might lag guite bit )
I have said this before and it gets old but why run Vista when nothing work in it!
I use Vista Home and Heroes plays on it no problems with no patch or nothing

Forget about Windows XP and Virtual programs!
I have been playing Heroes III since the end of the 1990s, I think, and Heroes IV since it first came out. I mean intermittently, not continually. I do other things too. Heroes III & IV have played perfectly on the five Windows OSs I have used, excluding the various service packs, and including Windows Vista 64-bits and Windows 7 64-bits.
So I am confident that if you cannot get either of these games to play smoothly on Vista or 7, you do NOT need to use Windows XP or Virtual Box or some other desperate tactic. I got into some serious headaches trying to install Windows XP on a SATA hard drive, and I had trouble with Virtual Box. But you DO need to find out what you are doing, or what it is about your system configuration that is preventing Vista or Win 7 from running the game properly.
Here are some things to keep in mind:
1. When you install Heroes III or IV on a contemporary system, the installation will tell you that you have a later version of DirectX than comes with the game but would you like to install DirectX anyway? I'm pretty sure you had better click no. At least I've never clicked yes.
2. Also during the installation, you'll get an information screen giving faulty information about your system, and telling you that your system does not meet the game's minimum requirements. Specifically, regarding memory and hard drive size. Just ignore the faulty information and the message, and continue with the installation.
3. With both Vista and Win 7, you need to make a minor tweak to avoid having to hunt through your system for your saved games. (You should periodically save your most recent save to an external medium. Then if your system breaks down, you don't need to replay the whole game when you reinstall on a repaired or new system.) To make your games be saved to where they are supposed to be saved--in the Heroes III or Heroes IV directory in the "games" file--go into the Heroes III or Heroes IV directory, right-click the heroes3 or heroes4 application icon, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab, click "Change settings for all users", and click "Run this program as an administrator".
4. If you have a new Creative Labs soundcard, for example an X-Fi XtremeGamer or a an X-Fi Titanium Fatality Pro, you should download the Creative Labs ALchemy software. Use it to ALchemy-enable Heroes III and Heroes IV. It will prevent in-game freeze-ups caused by stuttering sound.
5. Especially if you're new to the game, you might want to pause Heroes III to check the .pdf game manual. To exit to your desktop without exitting the game, the game must have been started with your display properties set to 16-bits (not 32-bits). Then all you need to do is hit F4.
6. Use a monitor and an AMD or NVidia video card that supports 1280x1024 resolution (I think 800x600 suffices for Heroes III, but you need more for Heroes IV). As I noted in a preceding post in this thread, I could not get Heroes IV to run on a laptop whose maximum screen resolution did not reach 1280x1024. I have read that others HAVE managed to play under that circumstance, but I don't know how they did, if indeed they did. Sometimes 1280x1024 is hidden in your video/screen-resolution control center, making you think your video card or your monitor does not support that resolution. But if you have a both a video card and a monitor that support HD resolution (1920x1080), you will be all right--I hope--even if 1280x1024 does not show in your control center. (I've never used onboard video, but I suppose the same holds for it as for a video card. Onboard video should support 800x600 for Heroes III and 1280x1024 for Heroes IV, and if it supports HD (1920x1080), you'll be all right.)
