Laws that make no sense
Now I'd like to discuss this with you, though I know you've already discussed it a great many times.
There are certain laws in the US that don't make sense to me.
At 15 you are allowed to drive and have a licence.
At 18 you are allowed to get married without parents' concent.
At 18 you are allowed to be in a porn movie.
At 21 you are allowed to smoke and drink.
At 21 you are allowed in nightclubs after 9 pm.
So what does it mean?
At 18 you can get marries but you cannot purchase alcohol for your wedding, nor celebrate it in a nightclub.
At 14 you can have a child, give birth to it and become a parent but you're not considered mature enough to drink a glass of wine or go inside a club.
At 20 years of age you may die for your country without having been in a night club.
At 18 you can indulge yourself in group sex on TV and yet, no nightclubs or booze.
THIS does not make sense to me.
How can a person's maturity be measured by age and allow such shallow restrictions?
True, young people should not smoke. But if they want to, they still get weed. Illegally.
True, kids shouldn't stick around in nightclubs with booze. But, instead they go to private parties and there are no bouncers around to save them.
And how can a person mature enough to give birth to a child will not be allowed to go in a nightclub? Doesn't that sound fake?
I don't want to be putting on airs but at 16 I was much more mature than some of my customers, 70-year-old ladies, who would buy hot pink whale pants with green whales on them.
But I guess I'm not mature enough to see the wisdom behind the laws.

here ur allowed to drink light alcohol when ur 16 and strong alcohol when ur 18.
ur allowed to make a porn movie, star in it and watch it later at the age of 18.
ur allowed to go to a nightclub when ur 18.
one thing that I think sucks is that ur only allowed to drive once ur 18!I mean, most cheeldren can drive when they is 10 anyway!why make them wait that long?
one thing I don't like though!a 12 yr old can't buy alkahol or do any other of that stuff, but a 12 yr old has to buy an adult ticket in the cinema theatre,on a bus,on a train etc...it even says "adult" on the tickets
thas kinda weird...

That's in Estonia and not the US. Compare Estonia to the US. US appears to be much bigger, with much more population, no? And yet, things still don't make sense.

Some Ppl who are in the military even at age 21, shouldnl't be alowed to drink lmao
idea
A license to purchase pot and beer?
If there was a license to buy beer and if ppl get in trouble it is revoked under certain temrs and conditions. This could open the market, for classes.. $100 or so, to get a class, test, & passing certification .. then get license from the place state ids and Drivers licences are made.
This goes with kids who smoke weed too. $100 for class, and licence. If theres an alcohol/marijuana related incodent, depending on the degree it is revoked. (under misc conditions)
These need to work like credit cards too though, so you dont have ppl buying all they want, they know how much they buy goes on record to the state.. *This would disclude many ppl buying for other ppl* And perhaps, there is a bill to pay monthly, or the money is mailed in ahead of time.
You can also limit ppls spending ability this way (for some cases)
Of course there are eligability requirements, which lessen as the individual grows with age. "Must not be failing school" for example..
*of the other options, I agree this is 1 which is sensible*
We're talking about a world, that sells ciggerates, ehich do nothing good for anyone besides put money somewhere. *Unless you consider an emotional crutch a good thing*

My thoughts on this topic
First, this is all regarding US law, and many of the laws in question vary state by state, anyway.
The nightclub rules are just that, as far as I know: rules. Not law. Nightclubs around here have different age limits for different nights. Sometimes it's 21+; sometimes it's 16+. It's a matter of convenience -- making enterance to the club 21+ means the bartenders don't have to check IDs every time someone orders a drink. Making it 18+ means they don't have to deal with underage smokers. A coffeehouse my brother frequents recently made its backroom 18+ for that very reason. A parent (misguided, IMO) threatened to sue them because his underage teen was going there to smoke. Of couse kids can obtain illegal/overage substances on their own -- that's not why these type of rules are in place. The establishments put them up to protect themselves. In that respect, they make perfect sense.
As for driving, there are very good reasons 10-year-olds cannot drive! Statistically, someone who's just gotten their driver's licence at 18 is a better driver than someone who's just gotten it at 16. It's not just a matter of inexperience. There are changes in the brain during adolescence that make people closer to adulthood better drivers. They are more aware of their surroundings, make better snap judgements, etc.
Age-related laws are an attempt to regulate activities and materials that require a certain level of emotional maturity. Yes, some people are very mature at age 15, whilest others are still behaving like junior-high kids at 30. The law is aimed at the general population, however, not the extremes, so the ages picked are an attempt to get most of the people most of the time. The only internal conflict I'm aware of is that one may have sex at 16 (the age of consent in most states) but may not watch sex until 18 (the age of 'adulthood').
Regarding the having children issue vs. all the others: just because one is biologically capable of reproducing at 14 doesn't mean one is emotionally mature enough to handle the responsibility of raising a child. Isn't that common sense in our society? So, reproductive capability is irrelevant to a discussion about activities that have to do with emotional maturity.
What happens illegally (weed, underage drinking) is by definition outside of the law, so this is also irrelevant to a discussion about the internal sense of the law.
The laws that truly make no sense are the ones along the lines of "you cannot shoot a rifle at a whale in downtown Cleveland, OH" and "no crossing the border of this state and that state with a duck on your head" and the like.
EDIT: Silly thing posted before I was ready... Finished up arrangement and wording.

Yes many laws are stupid. There are so many laws that make no sense. But when you visit a country that doesn't have many laws, you realize how much they are needed.

Laws are for that, to be abided. No?
And yet, you have the law, and most ignore it. Kids smoke at 14, 15, even 12. Not legally but they still do. Hello, how old were you, your parents when you started smoking? I can bet it wasn't 21. (no, I don't mean anyone in particular with this)
Also, a person is NOT mature enough to have a kid at 14 and yet, a lot of people do. No? But no one says "You are 14, not mature enough for sex/kid, you should have an abortion." Once it's a fact, what do you do? Bury your head in the sand like an ostrich?
What I'm saying is that if ou bypass a law... you bypass it. And if you want to bypass a law, you find a way.

It's a rather demonic practise that the world relies on a financial premis, to say that marketing cigerates is alowed.
It is within the leaders themselves, that should inspire a country to not revolt, and adapt to illegal ciggerates.
Black markets, and mailing could no way keep the marketing of this deadly human practise in action (smoking). And I say, the world should adapt to non smoking.
And we can do it fast, but the world is maladaptive with our *current preceptions*.

Alcohol is far more destructive than nicotine, but the move to illegalize it (Prohibition) was a notorious failure. Marijuana is illegal, and yet market forces still provide it to the many who want it. My conclusion: making cigarettes illegal will accomplish nothing. The information is out there to let potential smokers know what they're getting into, and there's no much to be done beyond that. Illegalizing tobacco would be a waste of time which legislators can use much more productively by bickering over the budget!
Quote: Also, a person is NOT mature enough to have a kid at 14 and yet, a lot of people do. No? But no one says "You are 14, not mature enough for sex/kid, you should have an abortion." Once it's a fact, what do you do? Bury your head in the sand like an ostrich?
There are too many foes of abortion to make it a legal requirement. The law must accomodate the child. I'm not sure about this, but does the 14-year-old mother become the legal guardian of her child? I would think legal guardianship would default to someone who is of age, like the grandparents.
Edit: More thoughts --
Quote: And yet, you have the law, and most ignore it. Kids smoke at 14, 15, even 12. Not legally but they still do. Hello, how old were you, your parents when you started smoking? I can bet it wasn't 21. (no, I don't mean anyone in particular with this)
Okay. So, what are you arguing here? That we should change laws to adjust to what's going on regardless of current laws?
Quote: What I'm saying is that if ou bypass a law... you bypass it. And if you want to bypass a law, you find a way.
Still unclear on your point...what's the use of complaining about said laws if people are going around them anyway? People go around laws like the ones mentioned above because they want to do XYZ, not because of some objection to the law (or the law's "sense") itself.

The reason laws are like that is because
a) people dont care
b) ppl care alittle but dont wanna work for it.
I would place this post in category b.
And thus, its utterly useless.
If you really care, you should use your life to become a politician and change the laws. Oh.. not? I guess you didnt really care

Most laws are founded in a basic need; they are seldom created for the fun of it. Some laws may be outdated and thus seem strange to us, and the reason it still exists is that it has not bee nremoved...
But as far as pointless laws go:
- In Scotland, it is prohibited to refuse a man in a state of lavatorial emergency entry to your house...
- In Alaska, it is prohibited for a moose to have sexual relations with another moose on a town sidewalk...
