Stephen Donaldson's 'Chronicles of Thomas Covenant' -definitely one of the best epic fantasy books
Michael Moorcock's - The tale of Eternal Champion - includes 14 books about fight between Chaos and Order and much more
Ursula Legvin - Earthsea.
Enjoy.

The copy of Shogun I have is a single book (1200 pages). But there are four Clavell books collectively called the "Asian saga". They are completely unrelated books except for the Asia theme.
Shogun - based on the first Portugese explorer to reach Japan
King Rat - very loosely based on Clavell's time spent as a POW in Singapore during WW2
Tai-Pan - Haven't read yet, but think it's about the opium trade in China
Gai-Jin - Haven't read - 250 years after Shogun, about English trading company in Japan.
These are not fantasy books, but some of them are good adventure stories that fantasy readers might like (just replace a few characters with mages and elves and it's the same thing).

Quote: If you don't mind reading them on computer, I would suggest Kazaa.
And there are lots of programs what make it easier on the eyes to read.
I don't own a PC.... all my experience with computers and gaming is based on my working time in computer clubs...
Quote: So why are books so rare in Romania? I have my ideas, but don't want to sound stupid stating them. It must suck not having books around, especially if you like to read.
I checked Amazon, they do ship to Romania, but it's expensive. I'd have to really want a book to pay it. In $US, it's 4.50 minimum, plus 4.50 per item. plus any customs/duties. Ouch!
It's not that there aren't books.... there are, and lots of them.... but it's damn hard for me to find what I'm interested in... for example Fantasy... you don't find a lot of fantasy in Romania... and even if you do, most probably it's not affordable.... I had to pay 12E for Lord of the Rings from my income of 55E per month.... It sucks...
On the other hand, if you know certain people (like I do ), you'll find and get what you want, and then pay it slowly (I mean not all the money at once, but gradually in time) This is what I do (usually) but sometimes I can't find what I'm looking for...
Yesterday I got some mails.... I wrote to the most important four book publishers and ask about Robin Hobb... the answers were: "Who's that?" or "We've never heard of him". No comment.

Robin Hobb is published by Bantam books.
http://www.randomhouse.com/bantamdell
http://www.robinhobb.com (not much there but some links)
Bantam also publishes some of the other authors mentioned, like the weis/hickman Deathgate books)
TOR publishes a lot of fantasy books and has a lot of good authors (Robert Jordan, Terry Goodkind etc)
http://www.tor.com (good website)

Is that R.A. Salvatore? I heard he sucks...
Btw, if you want my advice on fantasy, stay away from Terry Goodkind!
Personally, I intend to burn every book he's written that I own, just as soon as he's finished his horrible Sword of Truth series...

Like some other people here, I'd suggest the Farseer triology by Robin Hobb.

And her Tawny Man trilogy, and her Liveship Traders trilogy. She's a great author...
The ending of Farseer was a little sad, but most of it got better at the end of Tawny Man

I've read both, I'd vote for the Dragonlance series personally. Outside of that you can't go wrong with Pratchett's discworld, or Asprin's Myth series. Asprin's works are harder to get here in the UK though.

Bah, mediocre, imo...
But I went straight from GRRM to Hickman/Weis, and not many people come good out of that comparison. And neither didWeis/Hickman.
It's just too much like an RPG. I mean, it's sure fun to have your party falling into some action all the time when you're RPGing, but in a book, I want someting more...
An entertaining read nontheless, though...

I'm not all into that kinds of fantasy... I prefer stuff like... oh, I don't have the time to repeat this. See above.

I must have said this a million times already, but in defence of Hickman/Weis - their Death Gate Cycle is pretty damn good! Yeah, about Dragonlance - too RPGish. I love RPG's, but in my literature I expect a bit more.

Well, I probably shouldn't make such bombastic statements on the scrawny experience I have with such books - I've only read Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Winter Night and Summer Blaze (or something like that...). And I never said they were bad; I just said they aren't what I prefer to read. Not exactly my taste.

I'd still suggest reading TDGC. It's really quite unlike classic fantasy.

I'm considering it; if I like the Twins Saga, I'll read it, if I don't I might not...
