Ironically I posted this on my site a few days ago, and a debate ensued.
I was a bit upset, because I used to work in the fast food industry (Taco Bell, Burger King, though not McDonalds).
I'd never heard of the term, it sounded a bit like Webster had an editor that didn't like McDonalds, and just put it in arbitrarily.
I think a job like that is a great first job, at 16. No room for advancement makes it sound sooo pitiful, but in reality it gave me skills and "exp" to use in future jobs, so that is misleading.
I think it is very close to slander personally.
One debate on this is enough though, I wont respond again unless someone asks me a question or something.
Edit: I looked for other things on McJob, and found this.
"What you get from a prostitute with lips like Mic Jagar."

heh.. lol anyhoo i was hoping people would have a discussion here, (or at least show me the link to your discussion you already had) i am just curious what people think.
seems to me a little harsh on mcdonalds, cause most people i know who worked for em became managers or quit within a few years

Well, you basically just said my side of the argument. I think it is extremely harsh.
I will agree that 95% of people working there don't work there more than 2 years, and really don't go anywhere.
The definition implies that this is a bad thing... but in my experience, it just means it is most peoples First job.
So your next job pays more, and they hire you partly because of your customer service experience, and maybe your ability to work a cash register etc.
Some people even use it to pay for college, because it is a job you can do, and go home without thinking about it.
I'm proud to have worked in the fast food industry from 16-18, and moved on from there. In my mind the definition, if there even should be one, should just say:
"A starter job, one that has little chance of advancement, but gives you skills useful throughout your life."
Or something like that.
My discussion board is nothing much, just a few friends and only 2-3 people talking about it, most of which is here .
The article I linked was on CNN, and it was just more factual than the one you have linked above, without really taking sides.
First article about McDonalds objections:

and Merriam's response:

That is the problem exactly Dingo... I had never heard it.
I figured I may have been the only one, so I asked a few friends if they had ever heard it used, and no one had.
So 5-6 people working fast food in various states had never heard the word before, and you'd think someone doing the job would be the most likely to have heard it.
The only reference they give is "news articles" where a journalist used the term. So far as I can tell it has never been common slang among the actual people with those jobs.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, and tell me what state/city/year you were in when it was a common thing to say.

I had actually never heard of the word before I read an article in the newspaper that McDonald's were mad.
I immediately understood what the word meant, however; it has become quite a stereotype - the fifteen year old boy with a changing voice being a regular customer at the Cleracil-shoppe.

he thought he was a chicken or something

I ate at McDonalds today and I actually got what I asked for!
Here is a little story that happend about 2 weeks ago. This story is real, it really happend. Well it was about 5pm and me and my friend where hungry. So we went to McDonalds. We went though the drive-thru. He got a big and tasty meal. I got a Big Mac Meal without pickles. I said, "I want a #1 with no pickles, that means no pickles on the burger." (I've said that i want no pickles twice) Then the dude asked if I wanted anything else and I said no. So I roll up and pay for the food. Then when we get to the food window, my friends says,"Can I please get Two Sweet and Sour sauces?" The lady gives him only one! Then I ask if I can have one more sweet and sour sauce and they give me like 4-6. So We went to his house and were ready to eat, only to find that they put pickles on my burger.
Only about 20% of the time you actually get your burgers without pickles.

For fast food, I am the devil. Problem is I've worked there... so I know exactly what is on everything.
It used to be cheaper to make a burrito supreme by ordering a combo burrito, and adding the rest...
Anyhow, I pretty much have to go inside to get what I want, because it is usually SOOO darn strange.
