and so the two amobea, adam and eve, were put into a spaceship and sent to a distant planet because of their misbehaviour.

and now some miserable descendant of theirs is thinking about attempting suicide by jumping out of a first floor window or drowning himself in a puddle on the steet, because of his disappointment in humanity.

Technology is fine as long as it has a fantasy element. I dun wanna see anything i can go and buy at a shop. Cars tanks, airplanes, guns and r boring. Star Wars movie was cool cuz had lots of fantasy elements to its technology.

A question to ask: Is the H3 teleporter gate an example of fantasy technology? I think it is.

You certainly know this corollary of Murphy's law: Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

I can't believe an idea so far-fetched as this for a fantasty game like heroes is actually getting this much attention.  This game needs to stay like it is, middle ages time with fantasy creatures and spells.  If you want new weapons then it should be magic based or out of mytholigy like heroes should be.

Good thoughts, everyone.

I'd reckon the Cannon should be included in Heroes V, either as a war machine or a high-level unit like the Heroes IV Catapult was. The Storyline of Heroes V could move into the Renaissance period (the period which Cannons were actually invented in), and therefore, include cannons and/or even low-level firearms like arquebuses.

Listen Ubisoft! Don't even think of leaving the Tolkien-compatible fantasy-mainstream patterns or I will not buy your product.
Man, until HOMMIV came out, I believed the world was a disc!

If there are smart people working at Ubi, they develope a nice game engine so they can release two games instead a single one, that is a scifi-polluted Heroes V.

as for me, i wouldn't like to see any droids except the den-droids. and if this name is a product of modern linguistics, i would like to see them renamed, even if it's something as boring as 'walking tree.'
========

there were already land mines in homm3.

and there have always been grenades in the form of fireball and ballistic missiles in the form of inferno.

maybe i have been unfortunate, but i havn't really heard of fireballs being cast in medieval times (please tell me if you have heard of such thing). so i suspect that the idea of fireballs might have been based on modern weapons when the first rpg-s desperately needed some damage spells.

i have heard about lightning bolts, though.
========

and i really don't understand why they feel that they absolutely need to talk about planets. imho the story would miss nothing if it wouldn't discuss the location of the homm world at all.

the homm world exists in people's minds, based on what exists in computers. just like our everyday world exists in people's minds based on some abstract thing that is called 'the real world.' and what the world in the mind is really based on isn't really important in everyday life imho.

most people don't think every day what planet they are on, do they? it's just uneconomical to think: 'i live on planet earth' every day.

why should i be reminded all the time about planets in a fantasy game? a useless rudimentary feature that only makes the world feel more artificial imho. someone is feeling guilty for lack of modern scientific knowledge in homm, or what?

Bring back the forge

I hope we'll get the same trolling effect as 5 years ago with the forge discussion on heroes 5 , it was so funny ...but ended with the most insulting town 3do ever created ...the conflux , a compilitation of all what anti forge wanted (phenix and sprite , and bring back halfling the're so cool ..)
plus elemental creatures and plenty of magic ...beurk ..just because at that time , some people were pretending to be tactic specialist  and at the same time explaining they could only play with one set of skills-spells...

let's dance with the trooollllls

Define The Technology Of The Heroes Time

Here's some more food for thought:

I think that the reason we Heroes fans might see an unbalanced mix of technology with swords and magic is because the theme of 'magic' is actually a very broad and diverse topic covering things like spells and energies that could power towering automatons. This requires a very healthy imagination which, I feel, many people(game makers included) do not have.

I truly feel that in most cases our imagination falls prey to a narrow scope of vision as the years of our adulthood begins to firmly set in. This has been a fear of mine rooted in a pessimistic view of a rigidly structured life abiding by someone else's rules, thus simply following orders and never really 'coloring outside the lines'.

Imagination is the key to making a game like Heroes V appear beautiful, live vicariously, instill adventurism, cloak our fragile hearts with renassaince romance, and confirm all that is loyal among knightly behaviors.

I always focus on the magic spells of this game because there will always be someone around with strange inventions that behaves like a nutty professor. Why not simply abolish all imaginatively restrictive inventors and make them a bard-like projection of a wizard that loves his or her books and is always trying to find new ways for magic energies to be formed and shaped like a piece of clay going towards a beautiful statue? Why not call nutty professors wizards and give them some basic knowledge of rudimentary spellcasting? Let's not have any industrial pollution in our creative and imaginative fantasies about dragons and long lost races of beings with mysterious power and wonderful cultures! It is clear that the fans of the Heroes set of games are more interested in paintings and sculptures than they are in a tastless invention that wreaks of burning ozone.

Do our types of adventurous spirits still want to be explorers? Absolutely! These fans have wonderfully imaginative minds and love beauty of a naturally magical influence. Add some child-like innocense to the natural magic and there you have it! This is what we want to see! Limitless beauty that only a dream could possibly fathom. We want spell compendiums and ecyclopedias of magic. Take not from us that which sets us free!

Check this out and see if you would like pics like these in Heroes5. Here's an excellent pic to get back on topic:

the third one is just trying to say: 'you, humans, may quarrel over your petty differences, but i just build roads. i like building roads.'

btw i guess there seems to be one benefit of going 3d visible on that portal picture.
========

but what does a portal type thing look like in fairy tales? i would expect that you almost unknowingly step through a humble-looking secret doorway that a witch suggested you, and to your confusion, you find yourself in a strange land somewhere far away. and then you meet some giant who asks you a puzzle, so that he can decide if he should eat you or not.

in fairy tales, miraculous devices are often found in some reasonably humble hut or cave or bird's nest or house of some cruel person in a far away land. only seldom are they found in an ice queen's palace sort of miraculous places, and those are usually far away from inhabited areas.

if there was a large decorated modern fantasy style doorway in the middle of an inhabited territory, people would probably be worshipping it all the time.

i understand this kind of portals might be unreasonable to expect in a game. maybe they would be cool, but i have no idea how that kind of feeling could be implemented. so i guess we will probably have to manage with modern fantasy style portals (whatever, they aren't the prime evil imho).

Listen people. Why don't we just have a 'magical staff' that shoots a beam of 'magical light'. And people can 'pretend'...in their own heads it's called a 'laser' (Dr. Evil style with the quotation marks here btw.)

And lets just assume that the ancient mages who built the 'dimensional portals' were savvy enough to deal with the advanced physics and superstring theory and wormholes.

And let's not turn the game into Starship Troopers of Might and Magic while we're at it. Why the need to have all of this techno junk in a game that has always been fantasy based?

If you want a game like this, get a petition up and send it to ubisoft, suggesting they make a heroes style game based in the future, but with no link to the franchise.

If you look at so many other threads where people are coming up with town ideas and creature ideas, nowhere are they suggesting robotic anything or fusion powered nonsense.

Keep it simple people, don't mess it up for the rest of us.

There I think that's sorted, we can close the thread now  Mods!

Djive, The_Hydra,

Please, I beg you, Don't shut this thread down.

Asmodean,

I deleted those mechanical pics. I think you are misunderstanding the purpose of this thread. I created it to combat too much of an advanced technology influence in HeroesV.

If you read my post that started this thread you will find that I am trying to influence some of the suggestions that some people have put forth concerning how they would like HeroesV to be. I completely agree with you. I don't want too much technology. I was trying to say that it is going to take a very skilled project manager with a well-informed set of rules on how to proceed. I feel the issue of technology in HeroesV exists on a very fine line. If there is too much or too little technology then we fans might not purchase the game.

If you look at my post before this one I talk about how it might be a good idea to use magic as a source of energy as opposed to electricity. Take the Two-Way Portals of Heroes3 for example. I want those to be magically enchanted, not powered by an electric generator.

Once again I created this thread to try and keep member's minds focused on the right technological influence for HeroesV.

Let's talk about the portals some more. Here are some portal pics for us to discuss:

This one is more like a magical entrance to a huge mansion of some kind:

Any thoughts? Please tell me if you think these pics are too much technology for HeroesV. We need as many opinions as we can get so that Ubisoft can get a clear picture of what Heroes Fans would like to see concerning technology.

a little bit technology never hurts , i give an example for the sierra game arcanum... the game style is like fallout, baldurs gate style... you can advance on technology or in magic and the role of both of them in that world was well balanced...
so if in h5 they will use tech it must be well balanced... a funny unit example gnome thinker unit : they carry paratoner so they are immune to lightning bolt , or air galley unit: with that unit you can fly your army etc...

imho flying ship is magical and mythological, not technological.

and i hope they will keep this thread, just because i wouldn't like all this start from zero again. people are just so smart and they want to use their knowledge rather than accept that it wasn't invented yet in mythological times.

in a mythological context, the focus is on something else. imho that something else is not technology. heroism and virtues could be possible candidates for the focus imho.

Excuse a careless piece of sarcasm Concis I'll try and control it in the future.

I totally Think I know what you're trying to say about the tecnology. I think I can sum it up:

The level of technology in all previous Heroes games has been sufficient, any more will have to be extremely justified - in that it directly improves gameplay and enjoyment from it's inclusion. Any less than what we've come to expect will prrobably be a step backwards.

Just an aside on the zeppelin/ skyship idea -  What was the grail for the Tower Town in H3? Wasn't it the skyship?

Looking at it logically a zeppelin/hot air ballon is not THAT far ahead in tecno achievement in the heroes world. It'a basically a boat - Which we already know people in Enroth/Axeoth can build.
A large canvas ballon - I assume people in the heroes world know how to build tents/pavillions right? So they have canvas.
And since there have been alchemists before we'll assume that they know that oil burns right? And can distill oil - right? Make oil lamps right?
So we have a boat, with a big tent attached by ropes, above a big open topped oil lamp(s) to provide hot air.
If they can make ballistas and catapaults then surely engineers can figure out these basic principles too - right?

Or maybe it's all done by a levitation spell - who knows?

But no lasers. Ever.

no, a skyship isn't a zeppelin.

and what wasn't known in medieval times is what to do with canvas and oil to get a zeppelin. giving this knowledge to medieval people is that i referred to as the temptation of modern people a few posts back.
