Evolution of the Black Dragon
Welcome to Dragon Slayers guide on the evolution of the Black Dragon. Here you will find information on the Black Dragon throughout Heroes I, II, III and IV. The Information on heroes I may be a bit inaccurate. Unfortunately I was not able to find a picture of the Black Dragon from Heroes I, maybe someone who owns Heroes I could post one.
Heroes I
Attack: 12
Defense: 12
Damage: 25-50
Speed: Medium
Heroes II
Attack: 14
Defence: 14
Damage: 25-50
Health: 300
Speed:Very Fast
Moral: Good
Luck: Normal
Heroes III
Attack: 25
Defence: 25
Damage: 40-50
Health: 300
Speed: 15
Heroes IV
Attack: 40
Defence: 40
Damage: 55-110
Health: 400
Haste: 7
Movement: 30/15
Well the Black Dragon is most possibly the most popular creature in the HoMM series. Newcomers to the game are instantly drawn to the powerful, fierce looking Dragon. also just about everyone thinks Dragon are look "cool". Well IMO the Heroes IV Black Dragon has the best stats and IMO looks the best as well. He is the strongest creature in Heroes IV and the strongest creature that can be recruited from a castle in the expansions. The Heroes II Black Dragon is also the stongest creature and it looks quite fearsome but the animations of the Heroes IV Black Dragon are so much better. By animations I mean when you are in a battle and you move your cursor over a Black Dragon they shoot flames into the air, also when they fly and attack other creatures everything is very smooth. I would like to hear people’s opinions on which Black Dragon they think is the best.

There is no 'Black Dragon' in Heroes I - just 'Dragon'. Here are the stats:
Attack: 12
Defense: 12
Damage: 25-50
Speed: Medium
This information (and the picture) is from my Heroes website - HommWorld. Here's a link to the page with the Dragon on it (down at the bottom): Heroes I
And I think I like the Heroes IV Black Dragon. pretty much for the same reasons you gave.

Also I think you should note the process of getting blackies in homm II. It was the only 'double upgrade' in the history of the series - an interesting fact, IMHO.

I always thought the HOMM1 and the HOMM4 Dragons were a bit overweight.

Hmmm....
I always thought there was no double-upgrading system in homm. If it were, I could have thought of some new creatures. Maybe I'll think of them, someday...
Anyway, I think Black Dragon has to be more powerful in H4.
If compared one Dragon to two Hydras they're weak:
Black Dragon skills:
HP: 400
Attack: 40
Defence: 40
Damage: 55-110
Speed: 7
While two Hydras:
HP: 500
Attack: 60
Defence: 52
Damage: 56-120
Speed: 12
So, Black Dragons aren't so tough in H4. Aren't at all.

If you just doubled the stats you are a little off. You can't double the speed. Their speed would still be 6.

Ok lets not turn this into another Black Dragon vs Hydra thread because there have been so many already that argue every point about which creature is better. This thread is about Black Dragons and only Black Dragons. (except H1 which looks more like a purple dragon)
Anyway in H2 There was an upgrade system, which most of you aloready know. When you build a Dragon Cave you then have access to Red Dragons. You can then updrage your Dragon Cave, (for alot of reasorces) giving you access to Black Dragons

Actually in H2 I remember you had to purchase a Dragon Tower giving Green Dragons, then an upgrade to Red Dragons and then another upgrade to Black Dragons.

Though I'm not exactly a big dragon fan, I must say that I like the H2 BD best. I din't like the graphics of H4 that much, the BD in H3 looks stupid, and the Dragon in H1 looks like some sort of a pokémon.
Dragon Golems kicks arse anyway....

Dragon Gender
Everybody refers to black dragons as 'HE'. Dragons are actually generally female. Don't ask why but they are.
Dragon King = no
Dragon queen = yes
And Arse is the proper word, americans should adapt it more, then they would be cool because its a cool word. Ass is just wrong.

Hey, Sol. Welcome to this board as I see you're new. I think that your idea is a bit old-fashioned: female or male for dragon? Why do we need this? Gender is only needed for HEROES, not BLACK DRAGONS.

I guess it depends on your native language - in Serbian dragon is a he... Few people speak English that well to "feel" the gender of a mythical creature.

In Lithuanian dragon means nine- or threeheaded beast with wings, but it is always he. That beast should actually be more of a Gorynych (WOG 3.57f) than a Dragon.

errrrr..... yeah thats the one, dragons have a tendency to lay eggs and breathe fire, anyone want to discuss dragons further? I know that in mythology, dragons are immune to all magic like in heroes. They are also big lol.
