Your area of interest
I'd like to know what areas of academic interest you have. What do you know the most about? What would you like to know the most about?
Here are some options:
Mathematics
Physics/Chemistry
Medicine/Biology
History
Religion/Philosophy
Geography
Politics/Law/Economics
Art/Literature
I already know about some of you. PH: History (everybody knows that )
For me it's physics, history, politics...

My Areas Of Interest
Hmm well,
I officially only have a highschool education. So that means my academic level is equal to grade 12. However I was further educated unofficially in the Air Force branch of the U.S. military service.
My education throughout my school years was mostly the same as other peoples' general education. The highest math class I took was Algebra2(which I believe is more closely related to college level algebra101). Other than that I was involved in a fairly average curriculum. I should note at my first opportunity I made the choice not to be involved in any music classes of any kind. I love listening to music but god help you if you're in the area when someone asks me to play a tune of any sort! I received several science camp scholarships durig my gradeschool years as it was of great interest to me.
Extra curricular activities included american football, basketball, baseball, and some events in track and field. The track and field events were 1 mile run, discus throw, long jump, and high jump. On top of all that I was awarded a first-in-state gold medal for olympic styles weightlifting competition. For those of you who don't know what olympic style means, it is consisted of two types of lifts of weight that utilize a greater percentage of total body strength than most other lifts that are usually characterized as "power" lifts. The two olympic styles that I competed in were "clean-and-jerk" and the "snatch". It was during this time that my entire team worshipped the Bulgarians for their extensive history of record-setting olympic lifters. Towards the end of my training I was sent an invitation to attend the olympics in Barcelona as an observer. I was under the impression that up and coming competitors were allowed to visit with the Olympians competing at that time and ask for advice.
Once graduated from highschool I joined the Airforce and was taught many different subjects related to Special operations rescue missions. The fields I was educated in and recieved military degrees for include:
1. Dive physics
2. Wilderness Survival training(evasion&escaping captors, basic survival techniques)
3. Water egress training for crashing an aircraft in water and surving it.
4. Mountain climbing(advanced)Mostly associated with mountain rescue operations.
5. Scuba diving(intermediate)Also includes care and handling of all equipment for assigned mission.
6. Parachuting(freefall& static)
7. Prehospital care provider consisting of nationally registering as Paramedic-"Intermediate"
8. Weapons, take-down, and infiltration training(expert level firearms, S.W.A.T. introduction)
9. Extrication training using modern technological devices such as "jaws of life".
10. CPR-"Instructor"
11. Physical therapy-"Assistant"(unofficially)
12. Left Gunnery station aboard UH-60 Helicopter aircraft
None of that really caught my fancy. I did it because I had to. At the middle of my highschool 12th year towards the end of football season it became painfully obvious that I wasn't going to get into college on any sports scholarship of any kind. I had spent practically my entire childhood playing the game and then I was told that I just wasn't big enough to play any key positions. I was 6'1" weighing about 176lbs. It was a difficult time for me so I had to re-arrange my life practically over night. I decided to enrole in the junior r.o.t.c. program at my school and from there I became the fastest promoted student to ever enrole. I went from e-1 to O-1 in less than 6 months. From there I joined the military and quickly applied for the airforce's special forces to which I thought was very prestigious. I was correct in that they were but this was during the early Clinton years and the military was being downsized considerably. When I say downsized I mean more than simply making cuts in certain areas. My field was hit particularly hard because the base at which I was stationed(Nellis afb in Las Vegas Nevada) was actually contractually obligated to NOT attempt any rescue without notifying the city first! Apparently if the city's rescue teams weren't getting the saves then they would lose funding and that was a very bad thing. The military presence there was very clear about keeping good relations with the surrounding populace. So, there you have it, I was sent to a place where I wasn't allowed to perform all those skills I listed above. As everyone knows, a skill is something that must be maintained. To not use is to let your proficiency slip and with it your usefullness. So as I said, all of that was done out of necessity for a direction of career. I didn't choose it because I was interested rather I chose it because my interest in football at the time was closed off permanently.
My true interest came after my attempt at suicide. I had already found an intense love for the medievil genre through the 8-bit nintendo games I played such as all of the wizards and warriors series and so forth. After I visited the dark place in which we all go, to sometimes either find a direction to our lives or end it abruptly, I met my first group of Dungeons and Dragons role players. The sitting was quite possibly one of the best times I've ever had in my life. It was sort of secret because many of the players were considered geeks, nerds, and dorks. Here it was that I found these people whom society generally labeled as less than heroic playing out their fantasies as great masterful heroes saving the day and killing off monsters of epic proportions. As you can imagine, it was an eye-opening experience for someone who had come from such a sporting background of football, cheerleaders, and special forces. I saw the most heroic spirits I had ever known playing as though they were these characters larger than life taking responsibility for their imaginary actions and so forth. It was then that I knew my place in the world. It was then I knew my area of interest. I told myself that I would spend the rest of my life looking for outlets that allowed me to show my grattitude to these kinds of heroic people whom society had written off. From that day to this I have decided to write books, make movies, and support these people wherever I can in honor of the real live people that inspired me.

Time for more insight on this topic.
You might recall I mentioned physics, history and politics as my areas of interest. But now I’ll be more concrete. Not as concrete as Consis, though. Don’t worry.
I don’t have a history of experience to tell, such as Consis. Btw, Consis, it seems to me like you had an impressive sportsman career. Was it too hard to throw all that off? But, having in mind the things that had happened to you, i take it you were no longer the same person. Anyway, you say you are a writer now. I suppose that is your regular job. Is it enough to make a living for you and your family? If so, what have you written (and sold) so far?
Oh, and my congrats to angelito for his noble decision, supporting those African kids.
My areas of interest cover a wide range, a case with many few people nowadays. Ever since I was at Kindergarten, I like animals and ecology. It continued later in life through my interest in biology and genetics, but not medicine.
I achieved my greatest academical “success”, if one might say such thing, in physics (state championship for the past 2 years) and maths (among the top 20 students of my age in the past 5/6 years). But ironically enough, I don’t like solving math problems at all. And I think I already made up my mind about maths, never as a primal factor in my would-be job.
Physics and computer science, on the other hand, are something completely different, and most probably this is where my future profession lays.
Along with my adolescence, came my inner urge, my interest in society and where is my place in it. That’s when I started reading stuff about philosophy, politics, very uncommon thing for most normal boys here. Not to mention my fascination with ancient history I had up till then, that only broadened my focus to more recent historical events. It was about this time when I became a socialist.
Mythology (as for a lot of people here) is my passion, my hobby. Primarily Greek.
And what last? Art, of course. The thing that fulfils me completely, my spiritual self, the resource my soul uses. I love movies, music, painting, drawing. Don’t read books that much. But ever since i know about myself, I love drawing. That’s the vent I have, when inspiration strucks me. I draw mostly fantasy art, human bodies, positions and movements and some abstract things.
And things I can’t talk about, due to my 0 experience and wish: cars, cell phones, clothes, tools and machines, cooking.
There. You probably know now more about me now than my own mother. No smiley here, I’m serious.

It is so strange to me that so many people like history. If someone could tell me a really good reason why is it good, important and Interesting to learn history, I would be very happy (my history teacher too).
Anyway, I like maths and computer science most. I never find boring solving math problems, although I don't do this very often now. I like programming too, Pascal, C++ etc.
+ Literature. I adore reading books, especially from Dostoevsky, Camus, Kafka, Herman Hesse...

Just Me
Quote: Consis, it seems to me like you had an impressive sportsman career. Was it too hard to throw all that off?
It was very difficult. It was the only thing I knew for my entire life leading up to the end of my highschool days. I didn't know what I was going to do with my life. I knew I had to make a decision quickly because I only had 6 months before I graduated highschool.
I most certainly did not want a future without direction. My parents were hippies from the late 60's and 70's. They did drugs, protested all forms of government, and participated in many questionable activities that are usually associated with that type of crowd.
I wanted to be nothing like them. My mother would take money from me without asking. My father worked so much that he was almost never home. I wanted to be exactly opposite of them. I wanted stability, trust, and direction of career.
After having grown up playing sports and competing physically, I was a prime candidate for the military so I went in and headed straight for the special forces. Apparently that is what primarily comprises the special forces. Young men who were tossed away for not meeting genetic requiremnts for the sports they were so passionate about. Good people, with good hearts, that weren't heavy enough to play front line or tall enough to play tide end as a receiver. Some were wrestlers that did well where they came from but once they hit the national stage were tossed for only being second or third best. Swimmers, track stars, basketball players.....this was what I used to be. When that is all you know without any college or coach from anywhere calling you to come play for them it is devasting.
So, the transition was a lonely one until I was thrown into the mix of the special forces where others were much like me. In there we were taught to think for ourselves. Once I learned to support myself I was able to move from the life of a sporting pro to the life of a human being with his own voice. You see, that's the big thing about playing in all those sports. It's driven and hammered into you to follow orders to the exact letter. Now, I think for myself and because of that my kids and wife can have a man who is able to support them.
Quote: you say you are a writer now. I suppose that is your regular job. Is it enough to make a living for you and your family? If so, what have you written (and sold) so far?
I am a stay-at-home-dad. This is a rare thing for a man to stay home while the wife works but she has a higher degree of education than me. She makes more money so she offered to have me stay at home so that the kids would not be sent to daycare. I agreed because she makes more money.
I have no published written works. All of my written material is being reread every day by me because I find a new flaw with it. I'm afraid to publish the material as my level education is not a respectable one. I have no college education concerning writing. I do not want to start publishing until I have earned a degree for writing.

I can't compose a coherant post right now, but I just wanted to mention that nothing I have ever read about the art of writing mentions degrees or college or any of that. The number one factor that comes up is reading. To be a good writer, you should be a good reader. That's where you pick up things like vocabulary and style, learn to recognize good character development and effective plots, etc. You can read books and think critically about how their authors use the craft of language without being enrolled in school.

Of course, Khaelo is right. To write you need to read.
It`s like that with any sort of art.You need to absorb
all kinds examples of that art and proces them through
your "filter", thus keeping the best bits and adding
something new and original ,something yours. That`s how
everybody starts. The better the "filter" ,the better is
the art piece. When you create few of the early works,
you can start improving your style in every aspect.
You shouldn`t be to concerned with academic titles.
