Hero Loyalty
One question from Djive's quiz gave me a new idea: Loyalty.
If a hero is defeated in battle, he will have several options. He might be captured, and a new set of conditions can be defined: for example, if the enemy has mastered observation skills (whatever names they'll give them), but your hero is a novice in them, he will be spotted even if retreating and will be captured. If the skill are equal or inverted he will escape.
Now to refer to the Loyalty issue: the hero could not return from battle to your castle if he is not a believer in your cause. To make him loyal he should spend a number of months, let's say, in your ranks. A fresh recruit from the tavern could defect more easily (perhaps even with some of your troops). So, a loyalty level could be installed, with several steps from "risky" to "safe". The theory of upkeep could work for heroes as well as for creatures. Keeping a hero away from home, and exhausting him in battles could erode his virtuosity, and make him "risky".
A way of preventing this on the actual Adventure Map could be represented by the introduction of TAVERNS along the main routes. These could act as "morale fountains", but different from other morale add-ons (which act on the troop morale).
PS. The risky defectors can wind up in the enemy's taverns, but the price should be very high, especially when multiple skills and artifacts are present.

Great Idea
Also, hero loyalty could depend on alignment, for example, a necromancer (evil hero) recruited in a town of the Good alignment or defending a Good town will take a longer period of to become loyal to your cause, and same with the other way around. Heroes recruited from their own alignment will take much less time to increase loyalty.

should also depend on battles... a hero who's only fought a couple of times against a few peasants shouldn't be as loyal as one who's stormed castles.
