Combining Castle powers( This is interestin)
Having been a Heroes player since the beginning, I have learned that using two different races of castles can be quite an advantage against an opponent using only one race. Since Heroes 4 will be quite advanced compared to the last 3, i'm sure that 3do can do this.
I think they should allow castles of different races to benefit each other once you have built up to a certain number of structures in each castle you own. Once you have reached that point, i think the option of building a structure that allows you to purchase units from your other castle to the current castle would not be a bad idea. This structure will save alot of transferring time, and will make my next idea work. Once those you units transfer over, they will gain a specialty bonus for arriving in the new castle. For example, Stronghold will have a specialty bonus of really high attack skills. If you own a Stronghold and a Castle, your Castle units that are transferred to the stronghold will gain extra attack skills when you transfer them to you Stronghold castle. And when your Stronghold units go to your Castle castle, they will gain much more moral. And for the whole thing to work, every castle must have a special bonus. Like, all units transfered to the Rampart castle will have an extra resistance. I would do this when i'm facing a Tower, since Tower is very much magic based. This makes the game much more strategic. Here's a few suggestions i had in mind:
Rampart: Resistance specialty
Castle: Moral specialty
Stronghold: Attack specialty
Fortress: Defense specialty
Random castle: Luck specialty
Random castle: Speed specialty
Random castle: Extra hit points specialty
I put random castle because i don't know how 3do might want to do this. Yea, i hope you guys enjoy this idea. It might be a bit far fetched though............

There will be a little bit of crossover already. Towns will be able to build mages guild with spells from other schools of magic which are friendly for their own town. So a town with life magic might do nature and order as well. Each town has 2 towns they are allied with, and two that they are enemies with, set up on a 5 pointed star (like in magic the gathering if you've ever played it). The stronghold is in the middle and allied with everyone.

Is the asylym chaos? If so then it's allied with nature and death (don't remember the names of those towns).

Life is allied with order and nature
nature is allied with chaos and life
chaos is allied with nature and death
death is allied with order and chaos
order is allied with death and life
stronghold is allied with all of them.

In HOMM3 it was just 3 good, 3 bad, and 3 neutral. I like this M:tG style better. That way there are no real sides, just different flavors.
But the combining castles thing has been done in Heroes 4, to an extent. Each castle has a choice of 2 for each level. Hopefully, they will be even and this will create some great gameplay. I really like the idea of playing against a town and not knowing what to expect.
I also think that there should be no moral penelty if you have soldiers in your ranks that are of a friendly unit. So if you have Nature and Chaos, no problem. But if you have Nature, Chaos, and Death, then only Chaos would have no moral penelties. Just a thought.......

To purchase units from your other castles and transfer them to a specific castle would be a good idea and could be handled by the Portal. This Portal (Gate) structure would save a lot of transferring time. I do not thick a time delay for arrival is appropriate. It would hinder army building.
When a Hero arrives at a castle for supplies. he want to build his army and head out. By selecting the portal he can select from the list of castles that have portals and select then the armies he wants. Now he can leave.
I do not care for the idea of a special bonus because they arrived from a different town. It would unbalance the play of the game.

You should guys...
Read the thread "Raize towns" which there is talk about caravans that could carry troops and resources to other towns...
About idea of moving units and gaining bonuses...
Wouldn't it create kind of shuffling troops from town to town to get those bonuses...
This new star system that has five different "schools" is just great. There are enemies but also allies and it's not so black and white as before. Also it's I really like the fact that stronghold is in the middle as "neutral".

More thought
After thinking awhile, i've come to the decision that having a portal in your town that will transfer other units from your other towns to your current town instantaneously would be too cheap. It would make attacking castles a real pain. But i'm glad to hear that their having alliances.
