Random Turn Order: a modest proposal
One of those odd, late night thoughts as I was goofing around with Warlords for old times sake.
Some of the features/wishes discussed in this forum for Heroes IV exist in Warlords (Heroes fighting, armies moving alone, fog of war, razing towns, on-map invisibility, customized artifacts, etc.) One idea I haven't heard yet makes for quite a challenge in the game: Random turn order.
Each turn (day), a different color goes first, second, etc. This leads to all sorts of strategic and tactical decisions. No longer could you say "It's ok ..I move before that oncoming army headed for my castle, and next turn, I'll have the funds to upgrade that citadel to a castle and buy up all those troops I can't quite afford now" because that enemy MAY move before you do next turn (day). This would be set at the beginning of the game (a toggle/checkbox sort of thing, and continue through that game)
The old reliable "Attack on Day 1 Before he buys creatures" would not be a sure thing anymore. Garrisons would tend to be larger, and garrison heroes much more important. Tactics such as hit and run could prove to be more difficult, as you may not ever get the chance to sally out before the enemy attacks.
Just food for thought...

Random Turns would increase the strategy factor a great deal. Lousy players wouldn`t have laim excuses against day 1 rush anymore. Scouts war would be much harder to plan. Indeed random turns is highly desirable for HOMM4 !

This isn't a bad idea... but it has some flaws. Can you imagine a two player map? Every other turn you had a chance to get two turns in a row.
It's like chess. If chess had someone go random each turn, it would be utter chaos. I like it how it is now. It's not like you never win if you are pink or teal!

Well, frankly, I found the random turns in Warlords chaotic as well..which is why I suggested a toggle to turn them on and off (maybe in the map editor?)
Obviously, it doesn't make a lot of sense in a two player map, but with 8 players it can lead to some hair-raising situations (like when your biggest enemy suddenly gets two turns in a row)
Mostly, I just threw it out as a suggestion. It seems like, from this small sample, some people love it, and some hate it. That's what this forum is about, stimulating discussion and opinions. :-)
Oh, and a special Unka Haakon Unprize to the first person who can tell me the source of the subtitle I gave this thread (i.e. A Modest Proposal). If you know that, then it all makes more sense.. :-)

Random turns worked better in warlords since you generaly had alot of towns, and you didn't invest much in them. So having somebody suddenly take two turns in a row to take one of your towns from out of nowhere was not as big of a deal.
In heroes though it would be a complete disaster and would cause you to lose the game even if you were way ahead. That would be too much luck involved in the game.

ah... come on kids..
random order might be cool... as long as you can toggle it before the game starts...

Actually, it's even more of a disaster in Warlords, because when you lose your last town, you're out..immediately. In Heroes, you at least have a week to go find a town to conquer.

I don't like the idea...
It would be end up being a real mess...
But if there's way to put it on and off, I wouldn't mind.
It could be used when playing some crazy map and want to put game upside down...
But surely it should be purely optional.
I liked Warlords but random turns was one which why I sometimes hated it...
