I'm not really here...
Yeah, I've been into Dream Theater for quite a while, and I just started getting into Rush. A friend sent me a CD with 37 mp3s for me to try out. I think I like their older stuff better than the newer stuff. I put a couple of their CDs on my christmas list this year, so I'll have to see what I get.
Yeah, I know DT has a double album coming out sometime. It was something like 5 songs on 1 CD, and 1 really long song on the other one. *smile* I like long songs.
I guess Opeth's next album might be a double CD as well.

this is really disturbing...
hmmm.... so heroes fans only listen to queen and 70's and 80's rock?
thats peculiar... i myself am a big early 90's rock fan.
soundgarden, alice in chains, and lately, staind(so what if theyre "mainstream", theyre music still kicks ass)
But my all time favorite is Red hot chili peppers...
best lyrics, best melodies, best overall talent, i could go on...
i dont really like theyre first couple albums in the 80's, but the ones from '92 on are too good.
theyre coming out with a new one soon.

Not exactly...
First off, I admit to being raised on 70's classic rock. That's just what my dad listened to, and I had little choice but to go along. Now that I'm mostly grown up I've found a new respect for Led Zeppelin, Queen, Boston, etc. Rush has been and will probably remain my all-time favorite band, and they've been around since 1974. So what? Dream Theater and Opeth both came around in the '90s, and they're in my top ten listening material.
The reason why I don't include many bands from the early 90s is because quite frankly, most of the mainstream ones are mostly garbage (pardon the pun). Better Than Ezra? Blind Melon? Alice In Chains? Lemonheads? Please. Stone Temple Pilots were decent until #4, Smashing Pumpkins and Tool is a class all their own (#9 and #5 on my list, respectively), but there's not many acts from then that are worth my time, and more importantly my money.
You want your "classic grunge"? You can have it. In the meantime, I'll be collecting things from proven artists and sampling from what could be the Next Big Thing before it gets there.

70s rock? Yeah, I guess Rush would fit that, but most of the bands I listen to got started in the mid 80s or later, with most of them being 90s bands. Anyway, it's not like it's bad to like a band that's been around for awhile. Unlike the mainstream scene, most progressive rock/metal bands don't fade away after 2 or 3 albums.
You also cannot speak of a band having the "best melodies" until you've heard some Blind Guardian.
Apocolyptica is pretty cool. I would have mentioned that earlier, but it slipped my mind. I don't own any of their CDs, but I've heard their first one. (the one that is all metallica covers)
Speaking of Hall of the Mountain King, I've been listening to that album by Savatage a lot lately. They generally do one classical track with rock/metal instruments on each album. (at least of the ones I have)

Music, my history and interests
I hesitate to post on this thread, but what the heck. I was brought up on on the "classic" rock as many here have mentioned, back then it was Rush 2112, Nazereth, Little Feat (when Lowell George was alive), Little River Band. YES, Led Zep, Queen, Kansas.............................. (I know I have left out countless others)
I still remember the day In the late 70's when I happened to pick up a 10" double record called "catch a wave" and then fell in love with the genre of "punk" or alternative rock or whatever you want to call it. I had moved from the classic rock to the tubes(WPOD), Bill Nelson, Roxy music and all the separate projects by the memebers and associations of these "art rock" musicians Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, Phil Manzanera, John Cale ect.
My favorite bands produced much of their material in the 80's XTC, Bauhaus, Joy Division/New Order, The Monochrome Set, The Lyres/The Beautiful South, Wolfgang Press, Wire The The (matt johnson), The Jazz Butcher are just a few that come to mind.
But I feel a musical outcast in this group I just wonder if I hit any chords with this post.

I'm a mainstreamer
and I have nothing against that! Of course I listen to the classics too, 'cause it's not the same without them. So, you can flame me, or not, but I love:
1)Linkin Park
2)Limp Bizkit
3)Sum 41
4)Blink 182
5)Nirvana
6)Iron Maiden
7)Queen
8)Deep Purple
9)Beatles
10)Scorpions
11)Bon Jovi
12)Def Lepard
13)Alot of Russian Rock (mainstream and not)
BTW, I saw the second half (missed the first ) of Queen's 20 Greatest Hits on VH1. I can say only the top ten:
10)Somebody to love
9)Kind of magic
8)One vision
7)Radio Ga-Ga
6)We are the champions
5)Crazy little thing called love
4)Killer Queen

Hmmm dont u think DT are getting a little too long winded? Images and Words was undoubtedly their best album,Awake was pretty cool, along with falling into infinity, but now I think they are overdoing the prog rock thing. Queensryche, DT, Fates warning are some of the prog bands I like, but at the heavier end, Cradle Of Filth, Fear Factory, Suffocation, Death, Testament(very old, and new) Carcass, and many many others.

ACCEPT!!!!
Balls to the Wall, London Leatherboys, Metal Heart, Fast as a Shark, Screamin for a Love Bite.....oh, yeah, Accept kicks ass!! A lot of people say the Scorpions are the best band to come out of Germany, but Accept gets my vote hands down. (Scorps rock, too, tho)
Andi, I was wondering if you ever heard any of Udo Dirkschneider's solo stuff that he put out after Accept broke up? He had some great music. Black Widow and They Want War come to mind.
Zud, ya B@$t@rd, I like a lot of the old bands you mentioned. I'm a die hard (classic) metalhead, but I also enjoy a lot of other music. Some of my favorite old bands include CCR, CSNY, Grand Funk.....stuff like that.
ANDI.......I hate to tell ya you're wrong, but YOU'RE WRONG!!!! The best metal band of all time is Judas Priest. It's true, I wouldn't lie to ya, and if you don't believe me just ask me.
Nobody in the history of metal did it as good for as long.
Nobody.
