Who's training the noobs
Talk about frustration.
I logged on to GS yesterday to see if I couldn't talk a vet. into giving Bizarro a try. None of the ones around would bite, but it had been months since I had been able to play a game. I had the time scheduled last night, and I was determined to play (and just about any map would do). At least 5 noobs came into GS last night and nobody but me would give them the time of day. No wonder the Heroes IV community is dwindling. Nobody was willing to put forth the energy to train the noobs (and it takes a lot of energy, I admit). I ran three kids through the registration process last night, including ettiquette, map selection, explaining ToH, making sure you have a compatible game version, etc. One kid ran out of time and had to go before my lesson was concluded. Another kid had an incompatible version of H4. The other one launched with me, finally, but then dropped me turn one. I have no idea why. I spent about six hours trying to train these three people, and didn't even get a game out of it. Is anybody else willing to do this?
We all had to be taught how to play online. We owe it to the community, I think, to teach others how to do it, and I'm not talking about actually playing the game. We learn that on our own through successive spankings. I'm just talking about the process of getting a game started.
I have a standard form I spew out on GameSpy to the noobs, and I want to reprint it here for others to copy and use. I always ask first whether they're registered with ToH. When, as they always do, the noobs respond with "What's ToH?" I give them the following message:
copy & paste in 2 steps!
Quote: what's ToH, you ask?
ToH or "Tournament of Honor" is an online ranking system for Heroes IV.
http://toheroes.com
most people here will only play games with people who are registered at ToH.
go here to register: http://toheroes.com/registera.html
since you're new to online play, you should look for people who are at or near your current rank.
until you have 4 games on record you're a recruit.
here's where you can find rankings: http://toheroes.com/rankmain.html
finally, if you see someone here in gamespy that you might want to play, look them up and see what rank they are.
do that here: http://toheroes.com/info.asp
if you agree to play them, make sure you both report your game so that you can begin to build an online record. that way people will come to "know" you, and you'll be able to find games more easily.
report wins and losses here: http://toheroes.com/pcp.htm
g/l&h/f! (good luck and have fun)
Of course, when I first post this the noobs are not paying attention, and I have to go back and explain each step and why it's important. Nevertheless, by that time they've heard all of this twice, it's reinforced and generally understood. So vets, spend a little of the time and energy it takes to build the community, why not? Waste a little time (and it feels like a big waste of time) for the common good. Or, if you're too lazy to do that, somebody just play me a game on Bizarro. I really want to try it out!

Unfortunately it happens in alot of places when you only play who you like & noobs dont have a chance to show what a honourable player they are.
In heroes 3 we feared of cheaters & rightfully so & whiners & droppers etc.
Heroes 4 i dont hear much of that at all I think players in heroes 4 are too stubborn & stuck up & not to mention most are a bunch of Aholes who like to talk smack & hang around thier own crowd.
Heroes 4 dont have many players & they need someone like you Lealth to show them about upgrading 7 all when they need help so they can play each other or maybe the few vets that actually have honour in this game.

I have been trying your new map out,and i discovered a mushroom that gives me +2000 movement rather than the +20 it was supposed to.I have quite enjoyed what i seen so far though, but you might want to look at those mushrooms. i'd also like to acknowledge Bargainmon,as he spends all day telling noobs about toh,so not all h4 players ignore them.

laelth, don't go in panic mood, please
we all tell them what to do when we're there, with special thanks to BargainMon who's guiding them through the game process too.
you came in at a bad time when none of us were around, well me and karik were, but we were playing
we go out of our way to show them the "ropes", but most of them just "want to play", "host", "host" and despite our tries they just want to launch that very second, not even knowing what they actually want to do.

Wow, lots to respond to.
Acu: If I didn't know you were kidding, I'd be offended by your characterization of H4 players. And thanks, I try to do what I can.
Tenakha: In Heroes IV Standard, version 3.0, the mushrooms give +20 movement. Were you playing the mod? The script says, if you look at it in the the editor, +2000 movement, but H4 standard, version 3.0, translates that into +20 movement in game (it's a bug, but the mushroom script, as I have it written, gets around that and gives only +20 movement.) I see, now, that our buddies at equilibrius fixed this bug. I was unaware that they had because I don't play the mod, usually. I suppose I'll have to produce a mod version of the map. Thanks for the heads up.
Valky: I know you helped a lot of noobs get started last season. I haven't been in GameSpy much this season, so I don't really know what's going on. That's why I asked the question: "Who's training the noobs." Glad to hear you still are, and I know the noobs are frustrating to work with. And Bargain is a great guy who'd help anybody. No doubt.
Balky: You'll get that game on Iron Man soon enough. I want to see how it's played. But last season you brought several noobs into the fold ... by doing what you've got to do ... play them. Too good to do that now, Balcough? Don't worry. Nobody will call you a point snow. We need the players.

Well laelth, the players' patience in homm4 is limited, thanks to the extended lag times. Thats the nastiest cause of low activity. Personally I dont have the patience for homm4 online, prefer hotseat. So I hope that homm5 will have it back to homm3 speeds or faster.

Speaking of H5... does anyone know when Ubisoft is gonna start giving us some real meat on what there ideas and plans are?
There are some threads that CLAIM that we should post our ideas and Ubisoft will concider them...but I would think it would be better if they would start giving us some idea of what they are thinking so we can help debate the isses etc. Instead of suprise heres the game hope you like it.

I'd be shocked if they even make H5. I would love it if they do, but is there even enough revenue in the Heroes line to warrant it?
The online Heroes community is tiny compared to other game formats, that it would seem a waste of time. If they are not keeping in touch with the TOH crowd for for ideas and suggestions, than who are they targeting the game for?
As much as I would love to return and play some more Heroes with you guys....I just dont see it being an ongoing concern for the corporate profit machine.

Tiny Heroes Community?
Quote: The online Heroes community is tiny compared to other game formats, that it would seem a waste of time.
The community might be larger than you think. For every tournament player out there, there are dozens of people who play campaigns or hot seat games. We're much smaller than the Warcraft community, but we're certainly larger than the Disciples crowd. Blame the limited marketing power of the dying 3DO for the lack of exposure Heroes IV received.
As for the barbershop analogy, it just doesn't make sense. What if I don't want to end up with a mullet like yours? Ubisoft has to come up with an interesting design, one that takes advantage of the latest technology and remains true to the Might and Magic traditions. It cannot please everyone, and players will need to understand that games cannot be custom-made.

I absolutely agree that bad marketing didnt help. When i purchased the game when it was first out,i had 3 friends who all wanted it also, but were never able to find a copy anywhere, despite much looking. And lets remember that heroes is an old game now,the community is bound to be small.

Dude, you need only look at these boards to see how many people play this game. I made my last post over 3 days ago, and this thread with only 2 replies after mine, is still near the top. The people who play heroes is a tiny fraction of what kind of audience game companies are trying to attract. This coming from a very avid H4 player at one time and a lover of the heroes and might and magic games.
