Heroes II running problems

I have a really big problem, that has started since my computer was switched from Windows... er... I don't even know, to Windows XP. In Heroes II, whenever something appears (such as when you build something in a town) or disappears (such as when you pick up a chest or defeat a neutral army) the game freezes. It just stops altogether. Does anyone have any idea why this happens, or perhaps, how I could correct it? Help would be greatly appreciated -- I really need my yearly Heroes II fix O_o

my suggestion is to format your harddrive and install win95/98. from there install WinXP on DIFFERENT partition. now you will have a menu when you start your computer asking which OS to start. use WinXP for whatever you use it and Win95/98 for old games

Don't bother with two systems. HoMM2 works fine on win2000. At least it does on mine

Try to reduce the number of programs running to minimum, if you already haven't done it. (You know windos always tries to load lot of junk to memory). msconfig is an easy way to do it. Also, playing with H2 properties (right click on H2 icon) compatibility and memory settings may help. Otherwise... maybe try with different drivers.
I personally don't have any problems with H2 under XP Home and Celeron prose.

Actually, I tried restarting my computer and disabling Startup file loading... Didn't work.

But WOW. I just changed the compatibility settings and now it WORKS. I'm gonna have a field day. I can't believe such a little thing was the problem. You are my new god, Pitsu

Best way would be to start the game in DOS modus.
Open DOS prompt, change to the directory where the heroes2w.exe is located, and start the game by typing "heroes2w.exe". This works fine for me.

If u are not aware of how to change directories in DOS mode, just leave a message here.

Just so that I'm not misunderstanding you Angelito but where exactly does a normal XP user find a Dos modus?

XP doesn't contain dos prompt. The command line isn't dos.

I know if I want to use dos I have to use dos box or install it from some old diskettes. If you really now where it is hidden would you enlighten me, please. It would help a lot.

Thank you.

XP let's you work with DoS too:

In german the menu is called "Zubehör", in english I think it is called "accessories". There u will find "DOS prompt" (look where the red arrow is pointing at.

If I want to play H2, I just open this prompt, change to H2 directory and start the exe....and there it goes.

If you don't get old dos Heroes II to work i'll suggest you get Windows version of the game. Price of Loyalty Expansion (stand alone) comes in Windows version at least.

@Joonas: It's "Komentorivi" in finnish

Yeah I know about that. It's the XP command line but it doesn't emulate the dos enviroment. Well at least not for me. You can give orders (even some that you can't give with normal XP interface) through it but it won't run old dos games properly because it's just an user interface for windows not the DOS modus (try to run windows applications through it they will work). That's why I usually use Dosbox but it doesn't run all games well either even though it has very good options.
Well at least my old Dos diskettes are still working so I think I'll just install it again. It's just annoying to restart the computer everytime I wan't to play something "a little" older though. Not to mention it needs it own hard-drive partition with fat-file-system.

I've got windows version of HoMM 2 Price of Loyalty btw.

EDIT: I found dos for XP. Well at least it looks like dos and works like dos but it feels like an emulator because it runs slow but games seem to work fine without lag. Obviously no hardware sounds though if you don't have an old sound card at hand. Damn I wish I hadn't sold my old sound Blaster Pro. It was an ISA-card but still.
Anyways try writing command.com when in the command line. It should start MS-DOS 5.00.500 in the same window.
Be warned! It swithces to full screen when you start something and it stays full screen after it. When you write exit it tilts. *sniff* Just like in the old times. No "win"-command doesn't work anymore.

Dos prompt won't allow many old dos games to be played on, but H2 works fine.

Yeah but I was referring to "real" dos prompt not just with Heroes 2 but in general.

But as you can read above I did find something. I haven't had enough time to test if it really is MS-DOS or just an emulator though. Hopefully it is. I just doubt it.

I have the same problem as these 2 had, and no compatibility setting helps. I seriously can't be arsed to install win 98 or anything like that either. It seems like the game really should be working since alot of people seem to be playing it using XP, so there should be someone who has figured out what's wrong and how to fix it <.<

I tried going through the XP "DOS prompt", but didn't help. I could probably emulate DOS somehow, but I'm mostly interested in how to make it work without having to do just that.

No, it runs just like when I run it normally, it's just that whenever I pick something up or build something, it freezes and the only thing that works is alt + f4, which brings up the "Do you want to exit the game?" box

I have tried to play original Heroes II Gold on Windows XP SP3. The Game plays but there is no Music in Game.

I have tried to run the Game in Windows 2000 SP4, but it does not start well. I think it is due to the cracked Video Card Driver. My Video Card is quite modern, and there is no official Driver for it for W2000, I have found a "converted" Dirver by someone called BlackWingCat, who is famous for modifying Windows 2000 and Programs for it.

Is there any way to play original HoMM II in WXP with CD-DA Music?

Thank you!
