Need to preserve my HOMM4 Disc
New member here, have followed TOH for a few years but have never played multiplayer online. I want to, but don't have the time. In the mean time..
I really need to make a backup of my HOMM4 Play disc now that they are going for $80 on ebay. Anyone have any good ideas?
BTW, my 6 year old is really into it now, especially designing his own maps, so I need to know how to make a backup of my disc. Thanks again.

uhh well if you look really hard at the back of the cd you can copy it onto another cd with a very fine pencil 
but uhhh cd burner.. ? how else would you..
although with equilibris you dont even need cd to play

I guess I should have said that I tried that. I was able to copy the install disc, but numerous attempts at the play disc have failed. There is copy protection on it. I'm not an expert at this (no offense to anyone), I just wanted to make a legal copy of a purchased disc.
I checked out Equilibris, wow. The fAq's do not mention anything about playing without the disc. If I install Heroes 4 on my laptop, then get the mod from Equilibris, then run it from the new shortcut, will it run without the disc?
Sorry for my lack of technical knowledge, but I am just a huge fan of the games. I have an original H2, a Heroes Gold set (1-3), plus H4. I never got into mods or all that, but since I can't get the updates through 3DO, or make a copy, I'm stuck. Thanks for any help anyone can give.

wow, Vesuvius, Valkyrica, and Blue_Camel; i'm truly honored (i'm serious, i'm not trying to be sarcastic).
i have followed TOH for years, and even registered to play, but never was able to do it. i went to gamespy a few times and tried to get someone to play me, but was never able to get somone to even respond to a newbie. i understand why as i have read many posts on TOH and here about why we (the multiplayer newbies) can be so frustrating to the regular 'hardcore' base.
and to answer the $$$ question, yes, i followed an ebay auction for a HOMM4 set (box, manuals, creature chart, discs) that ended at $80 just last week (i had it under my watched items but deleted it a few days ago). there is one now for a set of discs (no manuals or box) that is up to $61 and hasn't ended yet!!
does anyone still know how to copy the play disc?

Try Alcohol 150, it gets around most protections. The trial is free, it should be enough to make your backup.

Just use russian crack ware. It is the best. I got cracked english WOW which comes 3.0 and need no cd key costs aproxx 2 $. Sells everywhere outside your fridge. Come and check out.

I would suggest the Equilibris thing. It works flawlessly and is not too difficult to get set up. I got it to work on mine and all I had was basic Heroes 4. I had not patched it or anything when I put it on this computer. I installed and then went right through what it tells you on the Equilibris site and it works great. I don't play it online, because I have dial up and because I don't have time, but I play it offline as much as I play anything. I try to get everything to be disc free, especially for the computer my kids use, so believe me I understand what you are trying to accomplish, lol. On another note, if it's patches you need, we have Heroes 3 and 4 patches on the TOH pages, look here: http://www.toheroes.com/patches.html

Thanks Sapphire. I plan to use Equilibris at some point. I tried Alcohol 120 (I couldn't find 150), and it kept saying disc read error over and over again. I really would like to make a copy of the disc, but I guess that Equilibris is the next best thing. I am sure that it is a better version of the game, but I am so used to the original (along with the bugs and memory leaks) that I was just hoping to preserve that. BTW, is there a new TOH site, it appears that http://www.toheroes.com/default2.htm hasn't been updated since March. I check forums through there, but I used to get maps and stuff there too, but I haven't had much time since the beginning of summer. I was hoping to get another patch (3.0 to 3.42???) from there. Thanks.

playdisc cannot be copied just like this, it has a physical copy protection , so you cannot use it afterwards to start the game.
...but, listen to ravyn. she has the best solution. after apllying equilibris add-on, your playdisc will be no longer required in order to launch the game. so, you can copy as it is and use it for installation ONLY.
