Favorite Team
Whats your favorite team, from best to worst...
1:TowerNot a cheap one, but a good one when use properly
2ungeonExept the manticore, every units are useful and with a good special. Even harpy can get really annoying
3:RampartGood units with different abilities, good upgrade.
4:NecropolisWell, necromancy can compensate for the high price of its unit. A good team, but not exellent...
5:HadesOverall a good team. With some really usefull units
6:CastleBalance, but without real strength. A good team, i just dont like to play them...
7:ForteressDragon Fly can be a good unit... but for the rest. Wyvern suck for a lvl6 unit
8:StrongholdLack magic, too much brute force
Edit: revived!@

TemoS, you surprise me.
The WYVERN is the greatest unit in Heroes 3. Maybe not everyone thinks so but I don't know a person that thinks like you! And I hope there aren't!

Never gleefully go up against Fortress troops in the swamp... they can rip you a new one.
I just played a game where my opponent matched his 11 Ancient behemoths against 42 Mighty Gorgons ... he even cast haste to get to 'em quicker. The result: 5 dead behemoths on my retaliation ..4 from the death stare. He killed a mere 6 of them. On my turn, I killed 4 more of his ancients with the MGs, then the Wyverns and basilisks finished 'em off. Meanwhile, having the rest of my troops ate him alive. He had a bigger army, but just couldn't manuever well enough in the swamp. (My casting 'Slow' at expert level didn't help him much, either). The defense bonus Fortress heroes easily gain makes them fairly tough to beat down, and Mighty Gorgons can ruin your whole day. Try the Fortress on smaller maps, especially with swamp terrain. (Use the Wyverns as a secondary attack after retaliation has been soaked up. They can be a bit...fragile)
Having said that, I have a soft spot in my heart for the Rampart on larger, more open maps. Dendroids and Dwarves make excellent defensive troops, and Centaur captains are still useful in the late game (you'll probably have hundreds of them by then, and they're fast). Grand Elves are a nice shooter, and Silver Pegasi and Gold Dragons make up a well rounded, speedy force. Unicorns don't do a lot for me, but in numbers, with a good tactics skill or expert 'Haste' or 'Prayer', they can wreak a lot of havoc. Plus, most of the ranger and Druid heroes are fairly worthwhile, and can develop some good skills. But the Rampart's real ace in the hole is the Treasury. Using it well, especially with multiple Ramparts, can net you obscene amounts of money.
As for the others:
Castle: Level 4 mage guild makes this annoying. Most of the units are fairly good at what they do, and the heroes generally develop well.
Dungeon: Best of the 'bad guys', and maybe best in the game. The mana vortex can make for some NASTY spellcasters. Also 1 of 2 towns to get the Artifact merchants for some extra income.
Stronghold: Attack! Attack! Attack! It's a pity that you seldom get Cyclops Kings in any kind of numbers, as they can be very tough. Level 3 Mage guild is annoying.
Inferno: A couple of good units, and some so-so ones. The 'Castle Gate' can make up for some of this towns problems if you control multiple Infernos.
Tower: Very expensive. Some good units, especially in numbers. Very magic oriented, as opposed to the stronghold's focus on might.
Necropolis: Vampire Lords , liches, and Dread Knights,,, o my!! Necromancy skill lets you have a huge number of skeletons, and 'Animate Dead' comes up fairly often. Another town with a strong focus on magic. Perversely, the town is often placed on cursed ground, making most of the mage guild useless in town defense. Fairly easy to win with, if you know what you're doing, mainly due to the high numbers of skeletons. It's nice to have 'free' troops.

1. Inferno
2. Necropolis
3. Stronghold
4. Tower
5. Fortress
6. Dungeon
7. Rampart
8. Castle
Inferno is most fun for me to play. I like Necro units the most except for Ancinet Behomoths which is my favorite unit and I just enjoy fighting battles with Stronghold. Tower is interesting to play with many dif strategies available. Fortress has Mighty Gorgons which I always get a kick out of when the 15 Mighty Gorgons I get on week 2 can sometimes get me a Utopia or kill the 7ths guarding some artifact I really want. Dungeon- alway seems to get the best spells and with mana vortex is too easy. Rampart, not bad town, but with it's many HP's and cheap cost per week also too easy. Castle, never liked this town in H3- was fun in H2, but I can't get over missing Paladins and also just don't like the units much.

My Ratings:
Dungeon (strong creatures, few real weak points)
Rampart (so many hit points)
Necropolis (gets larger by fighting instead of smaller)
Castle (strong creatures, but inflexible at times)
Stronghold (heavy damage, so it's great with tactics, but tends to go down against fast opponents)
Tower (not nearly enough HP, and very pricey)
Fortress (great secondary town, but it can't take castles worth jack)
Inferno (low HP, overpriced, 4 walkers, etc.)
Conflux is not ranked, as Conflux was a half-arsed job that was obviously never playtested and wqas not balanced at all. It seems like 3DO threw it together in an afternoon

1-Necropolis (gain strength with each battle and excellent in a seige or anywhere else for that matter).
2-Rampart (great balance, great defense, and TREASURY)
3-Dungeon (also very balanced, fun units like Harpy Hags)
4-Castle (although slightly boring, no real weakness and the most powerful unit doesn't hurt)
5-Fortress (fun units with great abilities, but the heroes generally suck)
6-Stronghold (CHEAP, but lev 3 magic guild hurts. Not the best for a seige)
7-Tower (too expensive, low hp, but great magic)
8-Inferno (almost exclusively land-bound until 6-7 level units appear. Horrible range unit and can get torn to shreds in a seige)

Don't forget.
HOMM making the creatures.. they also making the wyvern and Manticore Much to low for their real strengh.. Wyverns are Very poisones and very agressive in real fantasy.. The Manticore! WHAHAHAH I think they are even more worth being level 7 then black dragon... they are born to slay dragons in legends. So Homm made this creatures to weak.. so don't blame the real creatures!
