Gelu is the best!
Just build Homestead, recruit some Elves, and upgrade them into Sharpshooters. And you'll be able to get almost all mines in first week!

1. Gelu! Sharpshooters are simply too good. I took dragon dwell on day 2 with them. The best part about sharpshooters is that even though the last dragon moraled, he didn't attack the sharpshooters because of their insane retal (it is insane despite the fact that it only does 1/2 damage)!!! He went for the fodder instead.
2. Drakon. He WOULD be better if the developers put a little bit of thought into him. WHY make him a Tower hero, but not make snow Enchanters' native terrain? Having 1/2 speed on the adventure map really nurfs Drakon.

One more vote for Gelu. Reasoning is simple enough -- I played all the standard campaigns long time ago, and Gelu is the only fella I remember

Sandro is good too but lot of people like it for the Cloak of Undead King and maybe his campaign portrait is good but i like his classic H3 portrait or H1-H2 portrait (two of same)

Gelu was my favorite but i also liked Lord Haart but not only because of his specialty. I like the fact that he betrayed his kingdom and they killed him for that and after that Necromancers resurrected him as Death Knight. Lot's of good stories and ideas have come to me from the Lord Haart's story. Too bad Nikolai never become real menace in H5 but maybe that would be too much alike H3 story line.

Crag Hack simply crushes anyone. How does double damage sounds to you? Better than to transform 150 Grand Elves in 150 Sharpshooters, and it's free.
