Wow, some guy on a forum just called my dog a failure and told me to kill it.
You don't need to worry Joonas, I assure you she prioritizes moose over rats when she's in the woods.
But when she's just walking around the backyard and she can hear and smell them moving under the snow, well I can't blame her. Besides it's more fun-time than hunting-time for her.
I know of many hunters that just see their dogs as tools and kill them if they fail, but at least my family values them as more. If she doesn't turn to be a good hunter we'll have a really nice family dog.
So no, there won't be any gloves made out of my dog, thank you for your concern.

Fabulous ain't it?
It's still a youngster ain't it? No reason to judge yet.
True, they're annoying little snows, the rats, ain't they?
I know a few. And I understand them completely. I'd hate to buy an expensive dog and spend two years training it just to find out it's going to go running after raccoon dogs on a moose hunt. That sucks big time.
There's also the fact that hunting dogs make bad family dogs due to the amount of activity they require. They need activities. A lot.
You sure about the glove thing? Maybe mittens then. If you trim it before it loses it's winter hair you can use the hair to make wool string and make mittens out of it. Dog hair is really warm.
PS. Do you hunt?

She's not very young, she's 2 years old, but swedish elkhounds are known to bloom late She hunts well though, too bad there wasn't much moose around during her premiere... but we've heard her use... argh, can't find the word... standstill barking? You know what I mean.
Some don't even have any interest in hunting until they're like, 5 years old. There must've been many cases of hunters who kill their dogs for not hunting properly, when in fact they just haven't reached their hunting-puberty or something
And yeah, I too understand hunters who don't get what they paid for... fortunately we got both of our dogs for free
Yeah they require massive activity, but she gets enough.
Some hunting dogs make awesome family pets though, we have a beagle too and they sleep even if they aren't tired, just... lazy. But put her in the woods and she'll chase those hares til she drops.
Heh, we get enough wool from that elkhound to make a shirt every year
I don't hunt, but my father does and my little brother is studying for it. I never had the interest.

Two years is actually young for a moose hunter. They tend to be too rash before third year.
I know. That's what they are supposed to do. If the effect is desired then you got yourself one fine dog.
That's for sure. Some just live their head in the clouds(or nose in rabbit holes) for too long.
Oh yeah, beagles are weirdoes. Know a few. Lazier than I am.
Somehow I didn't get that hunter vibe from you. More of the nerd kind.
Do you test dogs on bears there?

Nerd vibes huh? Heh.
Bears? Yeah, sometimes, though I'd rather if not any of my dogs were part of it...
I hate bears. And wolves, I really don't like wolves. A friend of mine had their terrier eaten alive by a pack of em, that's why I tend to get a bit angry when people defend them and think hunting them is wrong.
The brood that our elkhound came from was specifically bred for bear interest so it wouldn't surprise me if she shows interest though.

Why hate bears? Bears are good. And taste well too. And they don't make anything wrong. Just happen to take the same jog route I do sometimes.
Wolves are okay as long as they don't get cocky. Which usually happens if they're sick, hybrids or messed with.
Well if the dog isn't completely stupid or just slow the chances of injury or death are pretty small with bear hunting. Some are just not up for it. It's pretty much no or yes question. Most dogs can't stand the smell of bear blood. Not nearly all from breeds meant for hunting them can either.

If a pack of wolves happen to cross a dog they often play with it, like a cat plays with a mouse. Training you know, easy prey.
Don't know that much about bear hunting really. I've heard that dogs that fail at stalling the bear often come running back to their master, which puts the hunter at risk too. Semi automatic weaponary ftw, my neighbour emptied 6 shots into a bear that charged him, it fell dead a metre from him
Bears are scary cuz they never stop wanting to kill you. It's angry, and if you shoot it it gets angrier, shoot it a bit more and it changes tactics, hide a bit and then ambush you.
Never eaten bear, cool

I know. That's why they're good long as they fear us enough to stay far enough. Where they won't be eating our dogs.
Bear is tricky because the deadly shot area is rather small and hitting it is complicated if compared to a moose for example since they have so short legs and round build that makes the chest rather covered. And they can stay on their feet for some time after the deadly hit just as moose. Unless you do some crazy stunt like shoot the brains they won't drop instantly. In the situation with your neighbour It is probable that the second shot was already deadly.
But bear hunting is usually done like moose. With people and dogs driving the bear into a line of hunters.
Bears aren't scary because they aren't angry to begin with. They just look at you and you both go on your way. Unless they got a reason to hate you, like puppies but even then they tend to like drawing attention while teh puppies circle unless they're at plain sight and you are at the most unlucky place. Or you go messing with their hibernation. Or just plain anoy them enough. I'd be pissed too if I had dog jumping around me or someone shot me in the arm.
If your neighbour shot a bear how come you haven't eaten any?
PS. Semi-automatics are for those who can't shoot.
If you don't hit the first time why miss another time?

Quote: I know. That's why they're good long as they fear us enough to stay far enough. Where they won't be eating our dogs.
Couldn't agree more
Yeah, people compare hitting a charging bear in zeh deadly area to bullseyeing a tennis ball that is bouncing towards you.
I still think they're scary cuz as you said, you might be in an unlucky place, happen to surprise a mother with her cubs, and then you're dead. Besides I don't like things that bite back when you shoot em, not very manly I know.
Dunno why, cuz I was never invited? now I wanna eat bear.
I think people appreciate semi-automatic weapons when a bear is charging you, but I agree. My brother's hunting teacher mentioned that over the years he has noticed that people who like semi-automatic are usually more reckless and worse at aiming than others.

You're pretty much the unluckiest guy on earth if you get killed by a bear.
Strange. Here it's usually a big gathering with lot of people invited.
I can see why. I'd appreciate my assault rifle surprisingly lot if I got a bear intent on maiming me. 2,7 seconds and 30 rounds, clip change and another 30 rounds and it's around 6 seconds. So eat that.
It's true. It does have that effect on people. So maybe if we started using barrel loaded ones we'd be much better shooters then?
Woah, wait, what?
You have hunting teachers there?
Doesn't your father teach your brother?

Love it Mine is showing discomfort with all this heat, she's always on the floor near an open door or window nowadays.
Edit:
My sis brought home this adorable little guy, doubt we'll be keeping him though Plus my Luna goes crazy when he's around, they do not get along very well.

Awww, kitty kitty kitty.
Cats will usually eventually get along after one is established as dominate, but it's not always a fun process. Growing up, our first cat started going bald once we got a younger cat in the house because of stress, according to the vet

The adorable kitty with the mischievous character and insatiable appetite has fallen to its death. Rest in peace kitty
It slipped off the balcony and my mother was not close enough to catch it in time. Poor guy landed badly, it was instant.

That's terrible. They have an innate ability to fall and survive but I guess was too high. My last four cats died butchered by cars. Now the two I have are not allowed to go outside, other wise they will probably join the ones buried in the garden.

We should learn falling techniques from cats if anything. He was just a month old and height was 4 floors, could probably make it if he landed on his feet but he lucked out..
