Poll Question: Should Heroes IV include Airships? (GOTO THIS POOL not one below)
Airships would be a great addition to the Heroes community. Some people would feel that airships are unrealistic in the fantasy genre, but they are very much part of it. Think about the possiblities. You could make places on the map only reachable by airships, you could move faster on the map and fly over mountains and water. The only downfall to this would be that you would be able to rush an opponent early in the game and scout the map with little difficulty. But, this can be easily fixed by having limiting factors such as running low on fuel, being attacked by flying creatures (Gargoyles, Griffins, Pegasi, Dragons etc..) weather storms, cliffs that are too high to fly over, things on the ground shoot down your airship with arrows or missles, you get blown in the wrong direction, and many more. Plus you wouldn't be able to go underground with an airship or underwater if they make that in heroes IV. Some types of airships would be Hot air ballons, hang gliders, blimps etc.. I feel this would be a great idea and addition to the heroes genre. Happy voting =)

It would be great that besides heroes on horses, you could have your warlock flying over the map mounted on a black dragon, purchased at some specific building. Or have your archmage crossing seas on a gigantic water snake, if you have the proper spell to control it.

_Seiken_ idea is not bad, but this should be limited like the heroe can only fly in top of the dragon if it was alone with the dragon because the dragon can't carry all armies.

Airships are not needed.(but might look cool)
If they were available in the early game they would render map boundaries meaningless. If they were in the late game they would be the same as fly or dimentiondoor, or angels wings(which is a horrible artifact for your enemy to have).
Question for HOMM4 is since your creatures don't need a hero to be in their party, can flying creatures go over mountains and other map obsticles?

Airship?
Well actually, airships would be cool when transporting troops, instead of walking, flying is faster but the problem is that if there are wild dragons around then it would be a dissaster. If there would be airships, would you battle with another airship? or you just use it as a transportation?

Why am I suddenly seeing the "Goblin Balloon Brigade" card from MTG in my mind's eye?
First, implementing some of these ideas would probably mean adding another level (Air) to the map, which 3DO has already said just isn't going to happen.
But, we can still dream.
Now, as far as transporting armies by air, Heroes 3 has a spell and an artifact to do just that. I imagine Heroes 4 will also have the 'fly' spell, and probably the Angel Wings will be back, or something like them. If so, they'll be highly sought after items again.
Having said that, being able to build some sort of very expensive crude, slow flying device in the late stages of the game might be kind of fun. I'd make it like a boat. Boarding/Unloading ends the turn. And if it's just sitting around, it's up for grabs. Heck, if "scuttle boat" is still in the game, make it possible to destroy using that spell when on the ground. It should probably get no movement bonuses (or penalties) of any kind.
In other games, flying armies do fly across the map. And if the army has only flying troops, the heroes fly with it. (Warlords, for example) However, in HOMM, this is a game breaker. It would make quest gates, etc totally irrelevant. Given that some towns seem to start with a Level 1 flyer (Preserve, for instance), there'd be no reason to play anything else, or build anything but flyers, the faster the better. Given the care and time that will be lavished on maps with the new map editor, I think I'll do H4 map makers a favor in advance and give a big to that idea.

Question:
Didn't 3DO remove the Fly and Dimension Door spells? I thought I remembered hearing about it at HMM4.com.

Yeah, so they probably don't want airships... I like the idea of magical forces to fly better than mechanical. Sorry.

I read somewhere(CelestialHeavens i think, though i'm not too sure) that the "fly" spell now is a combat spell and grant your creatures "flying"(?) until the end of combat. But i have no ideea how exactly it will work

That's actually an interesting point. Can you use dragons or griffins or whatever to destroy an enemy airship and send all of their soft, quivering troops to a very messy death? Of course I guess it's, as they say in Boise, a moot freaking point to discuss the subleties of something that's not going to happen anyway. Ah well. Looks like it's suicide for me again. *sigh*

Airships isn't needed. I don't think it's very much fantasy, but baloon brigades could be very cool! But not too much!

Yes.. but make them VERY VERY rare, like an ultimate artifact or something. It would be unbalancing to be able to move anywhere on the map. But as an ultimate artifact, it's a good tradeoff because you don't get mega bonuses like in H2 and H3.
Alternatively, make a cloud layer up in the sky and the only way to get there is with an airship. And there's lots of titans and other cloudly creatures up there. You can explore the clouds with the airship, but not the land (for balance purposes)!

I always felt airships in RPGs sort of destroyed that vastness of the world, made it feel boring to travel around... So I'd have to say no...

Vinca per Vinca!
(I just said something to the effect that your shoes are on too tight, but that's beside the point...)
Heroes is a Medieval Fantasy game. It should stay that way. Too many "magical" inventions(e.g. clockwork golems, mechanical Dragons, airships, etc.) will just send it through a renaissance that will destroy the feel of the game. This is the problem with new ideas such as the Forge town. An airship is the same thing.
As for Dragons flying armies across mountains and such, I think it could be looked into.

I do not agree that airships would bring the game to modern times through technology. If they are be good designs and the drawbacks enumerated up this page are overcamed, then airships would be an asset to the game. Since we have robotics in the presence of the dragon golem and gentlemans in vampires, I think baloons would work.

You have sea ships in this medieval fantasy setting.. why would air violate that? And didn't the Tower town in H3 have something like that when you bought the grail there?

If there will be airships (I agree to that idea) they should be like the Goblin ship in Warcraft 3: they can only fly, not fight and not carry anything. They would be used only for revealing the map.
