Yeah, that was a rather extreme experience, Pan.
When my family goes out to dinner, we leave several lights on and turn the radio on loud. It's worked so far, but you never know. That tactic would probably be useless if the robbers were armed.

Lemme see, what else can I add?
When I was young, I wanted to devise a way to trap robbers who might break into my house. You know how they do it in those old cartoons. There's some rope tied up to make the guy trip and fall into a nearby tub of water; when he gets up he slips on a bunch of pre-placed marbles and stumbles toward the oven (that's heating), burns a little, and backs off into a net that's set up behind him. I was always wondering why my parents wouldn't let me build one of those systems; too much of a mess, perhaps. It would be fun to watch a robber fall for a trap in real life, though.

lol, was Home Alone one of your favorite movies?
My kids did something similar once after watching a Simpson's episode fashioned after the movie Cape Fear. They found their grandmother's ball of yarn - and strung it through all the chairs and tables in the dining room, then through the hallway to connect to all the doorknobs and just anout anything and everything else they could find to attach it to.
It was a pretty funny thing to see when I got home - it likely would have been much funnier if they weren't so skilled at tying knots haha
Thanks guys for the nice words about my break-in story, i'm fine though, it was an incident that happened nearly 20 years ago

It looks like any robber who tries your house will need serious hospitalization!

robbers and how to stop them
This happened a few years ago, when my family still had only one dog.
It started when somebody put Polo in his "box" (travel kennel) and forgot to let him out again and also forgot to lock the back door. My brother was in his room in the basement when he heard Polo barking crazily. He went upstairs to see what the problem was. He wasn't anticipating trouble, but his favorite toy at the time happened to be a box-cutter which he habitually flipped up and down. So, box-cutter in hand, he headed into the kitchen/family room.
Some random kid was standing in the family room. The box was jumping around with about 50 lbs of very angry dog. If the kennel broke, this kid would be in serious trouble. On top of that, a 6'1" guy just walked in with a blade in his hand. So the kid grabbed the nearest electronic object -- the near worthless VCR -- and tried to bolt. The VCR, of course, was still plugged in. My brother yelled, "Hey!" and the kid had to drop the VCR and get out empty-handed.
I'm pretty sure there are a number of morals to this story.

You Canadians have no right to whine about robberies. Its not the robber's fault you never lock the doors, so even a guy like Micheal Moore can enter any time he wants.
Me havent had any problems with robbers so far. I usually lose stuff before anyone has the chance to steal it.

Svarog, you're mean
Obviously you have no idea how traumatic it is to wake up and find Michael Moore standing over you...or if he's hiding in your closet... or your shower ... or under the bed.
Its a very real fear all of us Canadians must confront every day. I don't even know what's more frightening; when he's there - or living under the constant fear that he might be there.
You may call him whatever you like, but here in Canada we usually just call him the Boogieman.
Seriously though, it does bring up an interesting point about how people handle robberies. In spite of my experience I would still never want or condone a gun in my home, but for some people that's the next step after experiencing something like that.
Canadians just go get a dog.. or make sure that we stock up with extra beers in case the guy comes back and wants a cold one

Thank god, my door is always locked, when I am not at home and the signalization is on. I feel safe and can do things properly instead of thinking about robberies

lol. Well, if its any consolation to you, he's currently making a movie (or finished?) about health care, so with Canada being a nice role model for that, only doctors and nurses face the possibility of a scary encounter with the Boogieman entering their unlocked doors.
