If to say the truth, the version I like is in Heroes IV. Maybe because the horse looks like more a horse, than a fire element creature. But I guess it's because Nightmares in Homm4 were bringers of fear and served chaos alignment, which wasn't demonic. In Homm5 Nightmare joined the Inferno ranks, so it seems he gained efreet properties of being surrounded by flames. But what concerns the look, personaly I like Heroes IV version...

Not voting, just commenting.
I think the WOG version looks too cute to be a nightmare. More like a black My Little Pony.
The HOMM4 version was the first, so we all got used to it.
My initial impression of HOMM5 version is that it looks nice, but I'd like to see it animated before I judge it.

I would have liked the H5 version best, but the graphics of that pic looks so square, that I don't know...

They are all quite nice...
The WoG-Nightmare for me looks too much like a horse. The H4 one is actually very nice, but I would like the HoMM5 one even better with good animations - So dunno, as I haven't seen any so far^^
So atm h4 nightamre, complete opinion when seeing H5 one animated

I don't like the amount of fire used in the H5 one, but I do like the look of it, if that makes sense.
H4 is a nice unit, but doesn't seem as powerful as the 5th.

Guess I'm the proud owner of the only vote in favor of H3 version, so far.
the nightmare of H5 is the only one that can relate as a creature to the previous games, the rest of them are to f****d up, so I feel a little fond of him.
However, there are some big squares on it's back and if Nival-guys call themselves programmers they should not be there. Also a little bit to much flames around him, probably from the friction with air (it seems to be in motion). So hopefully, when it stops it will chill a little and the fire will be put out.

i guess that must have been perfectly said.
see, vladpopescu79, those might be the poll results for homm5 creature redesign manifest. not as bad as i expected, though.
there were some pearls and diamonds among homm4 creature graphics, and imho nightmare was one of them (guess where my vote goes).

Excuse me? So now it's all the programmers' fault? Oh yes, forget about the whole graphics crew! After all, this is a computer game and they've got nothing to do here, in the programmers' playground. Who cares if we'll end up blaming the wrong people?

Well for all we know they could be scaly ridges that we're not seeing right because of the angle or resolution. It seemss to me to have a more rocky/scaly texture than horsehair of HOMMIV's nightmare,

Don't be so touchy. I don't know who does what in a development team, I'm not a computer guy so I don't their denominations. For me all are programmers. What, you got a relative in the programmers' branch, or somethin'?
I certainly don't care if I'm blaming the wrong people at Nival! They're all guilty.

Actually, no. They're just doing their job. Before the programmers and graphics designers start doing their job, they have to know what to do. The game must be designed before it can be made. Adventure map objects, town types, spellcasting system, damage calculating formulas... In your typical commercial game making process, all this has to be decided before the people who pay for the whole thing decide that it's worth their while. The programmers have absolutely no influence on the graphics, music or interface layout. Also, it's not entirely the fault of the graphics designers if their work does not satisfy the potential buyer - they don't get nearly as much freedom in the creation process as you might think.
And no, I don't have any relatives in the game making industry. I just like to know what's going on in that business, having considered going for a programmer position in the future at some point (although now I know that I wouldn't be any good).
Next time make sure you blame the right people. What if I started throwing rotten tomatoes and eggs at your house because of something your neighbour's great grandad did? That's pretty much what you're doing, only in a far less extreme way.

i also think that the persons to blame for manga style are those who decided what style to use. i guess the people who actually draw the graphics are to be blamed if it's not good manga style, not for the style choice.
here's your inspiration for the nightmare design:
http://mapmf.pmfst.hr/~adolic/slika11.jpg
it's neck surely looks lizard- or dragon-like, and the protective(?) horns on it's back look extremely like the stegosaur. the fact that they don't look exactly like the stegosaur is probably just because they have to look stronger.
so, now we have a nightmare that is not a black horse with fiery mane but is a red-colored flaming crossbreed of a horse and a herbivorous dinosaur like dragon.
as i understand, the point is that it looks even stronger that way.

Tell me, how can you recognize this as Manga?
I'm not big fan of manga myself, so I wouldn't know the exact "definition" of it, and I usually define wether things are manga or not from what the faces of the characters look like (and if the plot's silly and exaggerated ), but this far, I've seen no proper faces, only the bottom half of the Angel's face.
So, do tell me. How can you tell that the animation style is manga?

I guess the chin of the angel speaks a thousand words. You won't find stupid chins like that anywhere else.
Then, the embelishment of the robe he's wearing is also a good hind (though not as powerful). The ridiculous ratio of shoulders-waist is also a good point to start from. And the sword.................
Then, let's not forget the aspect of the castle artwork. So far we've not seen an actual castle, but I fear for the worst. The artwork is pure cartoon, I think.

lol, i can see we have a person who wants to tell us we don't know what we are talking about (ok, i guess we might ask some manga expert, maybe lith would feel competent enough to give proper definitions (btw somebody already tryed to summarize the style more formally)) and apparently a diehard hater of manga explaining what manga is. quite a nice situation, isn't it?
as for me, i rather agree with the opinion that 'not every story is meant to be told in manga style', otherways i am not really a manga-hater.

You weren't referring to me here, were you? Because I only wanted to know why you said that this was manga style, since I'm not able to see that myself from these screenshots.

We're side by side, however. I'm getting revengeful only when manga seeks to occupy more turf than it needs to. Let the children watch it and let others go on with their lives, free of manga. Admittedly I am a little more verbose when I have to criticise those ......from Nival. I get it that they're not programmers; so be it.
