Ballista - info and some explanation needed
Hi.
Everyone here seems to admire the allmighty ballista. In my case it's due to lack of knowledge, but I truly have no idea how you people are able to make ballista such great a weapon that it is capable of inflicting - as I read in one post - thousands points of damage! Outrageous. I have never been able to make more than, well, err, 100 damage with two shots. So I have always considered ballista to be a rather pitiful weapon. And usually at the begining it does no more than, hmm, 5 or less points of damage, yes? I think I didn't make a mistake stating this. So, what am I doing wrong? Maybe it does so much destruction when it has luck and double damge bonuses at the same time and the hero using ballista has about 80 or 90 attack skill? Heh.
Hear me and share the knowledge, o enlightened ones .

That is all? But then again, how much attack skill EXACTLY do you need?
I have a feeling it'll hurt me...
And, what is more, ballista can be destroyed quite easily. Only 250 points you know. So, maybe it's just wiser to depend on a pack of, I don't know, mighty cows, archangels, blackies and such? They can receive far more damage and are able to... destroy ballista before it hurts ANYTHING.
I need a proof!

The point is, nobody relies on their ballista's power only (at least not in every single battle). If you did that, you wouldn't last long enough to get a really mighty one. Also, why would the opponent want to take down your ballista immediately, when you've got the cows or archangels or dragons that deserve more attention?

To this I must say that there has to be done a lot before a ballista becomes a powerful weapon of destruction you all speak of. Requirements were pointed out: ballista speciality, expert artillery, great attack skill and also expert luck would be useful. From these only the third and fourth are useful in other cases (of course attack skill is crucial, no doubts, do not think I have lost my mind ), while the first and the second are strictly connected with ballista. And I know better secondary skills than luck. Remember that you have only eight slots for secondary skills. And imagine a quite simple situation when your ballista is destroyed: your ballista speciality and expert artillery become of no use. There are so many better specialities and secondary skills. Not able to understand you folks.

ballista can still be used for when defending againts a seige (i think) and archery is very nice to have when playing as tower, also when playing stronghold but not as much.
so u see luck can be useful aswell as the other skills

Sure a pack of mooos or Archangels are much stronger than a balista, but at what time will u have them?
Try a random game with stronghold and Gurnisson as main (without a doubt the best ballista hero!). You will surely be expert in artillery on day 2 or 3 and have an attack skill of about 8-10. Now watch what he can kill in week 1 and 2 while you still wait until u get your mighty moos or Archangels (gold + ressources!) Your balista came for free. And for the luck thing, u donīt need to waste a slot of skill for that....take some arties..

Weirdly, it doesn't help. But for some reason Offence does.

Nope. Only the attacker can use the ballista in a seige.

Sorry to correct you here, but that is not true.
Offense (raises hand-to-hand damage) helps nothing, archery does.
You can try it with the editor (i did it right now to prove me right or wrong).

You probably read that in the Wog forum. In the Wog version of the game Gurnisson receives one additional ballista every 4 levels starting with level 4.At level 20 the ballistas will kill 10-15 champions per shot.
But that is in Wog.In real HoMM3, ballista is most efficient in clearing the map earlier, than it is in endfight.Having Gurni with his ballista can help you alot especially early in the game, when you can get into some fights you won't usually do without the ballista.A great exemple for this can be found when playing The heroes basic training map made by Ironwill, where you'll see Gurni taking an abandoned mine(throng troglodites) with using only his ballista although he had a week 1 army. That fight without the ballista would mean lots of losses and maybe even defeat!
just my two cents

Yes...this skill is called artillery. Gives control over balista and shooting towers. Catapult = balistics.
