Music Appreciation Club

I always wanted to start up something like this, so I hope you guys won't mind. I know there are several musicians and/or music lovers in the house, so hopefully a bunch of us will take time to check this out and post. There were many music threads in the Tavern prior to this, but they are now rather dated and I'd like to start again fresh.

We can share about our favorite songs, albums, lyrics, artists, bands, concerts, performances, debuts, etc.

I'm gonna share a little about my first true performance. I was a part of a three-piece under the temporary band name "First Chance" and we played at an event on Halloween Night in 2004. It was quite hot in the place we were in, but we got around to playing some okay music. We did a bunch of covers as well as some original songs I've written (that I now hate, of course). In retrospect, I'd call that performance quite impromtu, seeing as we didn't have much time to rehearse. There were plenty people busy playing games and stuff in the auditorium at the time, so we got very little applause. It was fun, nonetheless. I'd like to thank my drummer for the photos.

That's me on the right playing guitar.

Setlist:
"I Miss You" - Blink 182
"When I Come Around" - Green Day
"She's Got A Problem" - Fountains of Wayne
"What's My Age Again?" (parody) - Blink 182
"Broken" - Seether & Amy Lee
"I Can't Love You (Like I Want To)" - Guitarguy
"Always There" - Guitarguy
"Forever And A Day" - Guitarguy
"Halcyon Days" - Guitarguy
"Classical Gas" - Mason Williams
"That's My Story" - Jerry Landis aka Paul Simon
<encore>
"Yours And Mine" - Fountains of Wayne
"The Senator's Daughter" - Fountains of Wayne
"Please Don't Rock Me Tonight" - Fountains of Wayne

I became an R.E.M. fanatic a month or so after this performance. So please, no tomatoes or hard objects!

That is a good set list you have there, except for I miss you (not really a fan of Blink 182's later material).

Do you do any Hunters and Collectors? They made some great songs.

I haven't heard of Hunters and Collectors, probably because they don't get airplay where I live. The main groups from Australia that I've been made aware of via the radio are the Living End and Jet. My favorite songs from those bands:

The Living End: "Who's Gonna Save Us?", "The Room", "Jimmy"
Jet: "Are You Gonna Be My Girl?", "Hold On"

I like their Living End better because of their melodies and guitarwork. The guitar solo past the midpoint in "The Room" is simply crazy. I'm trying to learn it, even though lead isn't my specialty. At least they have good guitar solos.

I checked out a website for Hunters and Collectors and they look kind of decent. Looking over their lyrics and chords, it doesn't look very hard. And are those horn players I see in the band picture? If the music stores over here have any copies of their albums, I'll try to get one.

---

Just thought it'd be nuts if I put up my parody of Blink 182's "What's My Age Again". I changed the lyrics because it was a church event and there were plenty of young kids there. Sorry, there's absolutely nothing punk about it anymore.

I took her out, it was a quiet night
We drove alone, a quite romantic ride
The car is slowing down, and then I lost my chance
'Cause in no time I fell asleep

That's about the time she walked away from me
Nobody likes you when you're twenty-three
I must've had too little sleep last night
So much fun counting sheep
My friends say I don't act my age
What's my age again?
What's my age again?

When I wake up, it's almost 4AM
Where did she go, what a mess I'm in
I think she took my car, and left me here alone
Forty miles from L.A.

And now I can't see why she walked away from me
Nobody likes you when you're twenty-three
I think I should go get a taxi cab
Where did my wallet go?!
My friends say I should act my age
What's my age again?
What's my age again?

That's about the time she walked away from me
Nobody likes me 'cause I'm twenty-three
I'm thinking that I should just give up now
Oh what is wrong with me?
Will I never act my age?
What's my age again?
What's my age again?

So, being a REM fan, what did you think about The One I Love and Drive not being on their Best Of album?

I think "Drive" is a good song, although there was a problem with Automatic having so many singles that not all of them would fit on Best Of. The thing I like best about "Drive" is Peter's electric guitar in the middle. Otherwise, I'm not ga-ga crazy over the song. Same with the song "Nightswimming", which made Best Of, I enjoy the song, but I don't consider it a favorite. I will take it a step further by saying that "Find The River" is a very descent song, but chord progression for the chorus reminds me too much of my own attempts at songwriting. Many fans argue that "FTR" should have made the collection disc, but I'd have to disagree based on my own opinions.

I suppose "The One I Love" would have been a solid choice for Best Of, had the disc not covered only R.E.M.'s Warner years and onward. My guess is that they already released Eponymous (and later Singles Collected) which covered the IRS years. "TOIL" appears on both these collections, I might add. I can imagine hardcore 80s fans pulling their hair out when they find their favorites off the disc. In that case, I figure R.E.M.'s early material had their fair chance.

The Best Of R.E.M. 1988-2003 (Special Edition) was the very first R.E.M. album I ever owned. I bought it late last summer and it came with two discs: first the singles, and second the rarities and b-sides. An live acoustic version of "The One I Love" is on the second disc, as well as an awesome live version of "Country Feedback" (it's not the one I sent you, Terje). For this special edition, I think "The One I Love" is the only pre-Warner song to appear. It was included since the recording came from a live acoustic show in 2001.

Nice club. Terje and I seem to have a few things in common on that list.

My favourite artists would have to be... (in no particular order, apart from favourite to least favourite)

AC/DC
-"TNT"
-"Thunderstruck"
-"Highway to Hell"

Red Hot Chilli Peppers
-"Californication"
-"By The Way"
-"Otherside"
-"The Zephyr Song"
-"Universally Speaking"

Franz Ferdinand
-"This Fire"
-"Take Me Out"
-"40ft"

Three Doors Down
-"Kryptonite"
-"When I'm Gone"
-"Away From The Sun"

Nickleback
-"Someday"
-"Figured You Out"

Nirvana
-"In Bloom"
-"Smells Like Teen Spirit"

Five For Fighting
-"Superman"
-"100 Years"
-"NYC Weather Report"

Creed
-"One Last Breath"
-"Higher"

Coldplay
-"Yellow"
-"God Put A Smile Upon Your Face"

The Whitlams
-"Blow Up The Pokies"
-"No Aphrodisiac"

Sum 41
-"Fat Lip"
-"The Hell Song"

Jimmy Eat World
-"Pain"
-"Work"

Gorillaz
-"Clint Eastwood"
-"Feel Good Inc."

But I mainly just like major songs, not bands as a whole. I also don't mind a bit of Oasis, Good Charlotte, Green Day, R.E.M., Rammstein, Robbie Williams, Outkast, The Hives, Blur, The GooGoo Dolls, and Crowded House.

I like most music styles as you can probably see.

I have that RHCP album, and I like it a lot. I really enjoy "Dosed" because I really liked it when I first started listening to alternative radio in late 2003. I enjoy "Universally Speaking" and also a song called "Cabron".

I'm not into Creed, but I kind of know how to play the opening to "One Last Breath. I would have to say my favorites are "With Arms Wide Open" and "My Sacrifice".

I thought that "Yellow" was a nice song, so I bought Coldplay's CD-single instead of the album. I enjoy their style of music, so maybe I'll get the full record someday.

I only have Jimmy Eat World's latest album "Futures", and my favorite songs are "Work" and then "Pain". Those are songs with pretty catchy hooks. I also like "Drugs Or Me" since it sounds nice.

I'm going to add to my list above Snow Patrol and Keane, whose songs such as "Somewhere Only We Know" and "Run" deserve some mention as being among my favorites.
