FFVII. I got to the last area but then I just...stopped playing. Same with Dark Cloud. I love both, though.

Balder's Gate 1. My brother and I got out of the introductory compound, marched across some fields, entered a city, and promptly got slaughtered on the steps of an inn. Reload, re-try, re-die.
Planescape Torment. This one, I plan to try again. First time I loaded it up, my brother came in to watch. He announced that it looked like Diablo and started back-seat playing accordingly. "Can you get rid of that floating skull?" "Don't talk to that guy!" "Kill the giant skeletons!" <-- Bad advice. Apparently, a philosophical game doesn't require the same tactics as a hack-n-slash.
I finally obtained access to the spell-making machine and enchanting stand in the Mages' Guild of Oblivion. They were underwhelming. I sort of lost interest in saving the Mages' Guild after that and wasn't making much effort to save the world anyway.
There are several Might & Magic 7 teams on my computer, all of whom have graduated from Emerald Island, but they don't get much farther than that. Aside from the editor group (for story), my best real-play team is still mired in "diplomacy" between Erathia and AvLee/Tulerean Forest. And the thief *just* got promoted -- I hate Champions of the %$#@ Sword! The M&M 6 real-play team is even farther behind. I conquered Goblinswatch Keep. Woo hoo. Castle Darkmoor, here I come. I plan to come back to M&M 7. I want to finish it the real way at least once, despite my horrific gaming skills.
HoMM2: Archibald is having some trouble slaughtering dwarven villages. Yet another quest on the "to do" list.

I've never finished AVP (Alien vrs Predator)
I played as predator and I finished like 20 missions on Director's Cut difficulty (some of them were so tough that I had to restart like 50 times just to pass them by the skin of my teeth), then my hard drive fried

i never finished diablo 2: LoD.
i got to the pandemonium and i had lots of cash, but i just couldnt break through the monsters, i kept getting myself and assistant killed all the time, but as i had LOTS of money, i could keep resurrecting her and so that level could last on forever. i could kepp getting killed another 30 times and gain a level, of course, but im too lazy for that. and then the DIVINE SPARK came upon me and told me: "why play this brainless repetitive monsterhacking any longer?" and i stopped playing it and turned back to better more intelligent stuff.

What you should do is, if you have a merc and it dies, do not ressurect it until you have much stronger weapons.
If on Ladder battle.net, get an Insight (runeword) and buy an act 2 Merc and equip him with it, it is really good and should aid you're merc really well.
Also get if you can an Ethereal Fortitude (runeword) and a good helm ofcourse.
You should be pretty good, and I agree, act 4 is one of the harder acts, especially with god damn Doom Knights, which, with Iron Maiden thing, can kill you in a couple of seconds and kill the very strongest character in the entire game.
Iron Maiden makes all you're resistances really low and bad, and you can die really easily then.

Some neat updates (minor spoilers)
Over the last year, I made quite a lot of progress in completing parts of singleplayer games I've never been able to tackle before. There've been many a campaign mission that I just couldn't beat, no matter how many times I tried. I guess I've just been playing smarter nowadays, because I've been jumping into these games with minimal preparation. It's just too bad I haven't made progress in any of the H3 expansion campaigns.
Rollercoaster Tycoon:
One game uninstallation ago, I had completed about 2/5 of the levels. At that point, mediocrity was catching up with me and, quite frankly, I had no desire to manage wimpy little parks such as Katie's World and Dinky Park. A few RL years later, I picked up the game again with a renewed desire to play through the levels. I had to start from the very first level, of course, but I had a rather enjoyable time completing park after park. And yes, I eventually turned those small parks into worthwhile locales. As I went on, I encountered only minor problems (compared to other games), such as dealing with a plethora of malfunctioning pre-built coasters. I'm currently beginning Pacific Pyramids, the 7th to the last level. This game isn't too hard, so I'm just going to relax and take my time completing the rest of the other levels.
The Settlers IV:
I swear, I thought I'd never pass the mission where you play the Mayans versus allied Romans and Vikings. I finally managed to win, but only by building up a military at a dizzying speed and setting up hasty fortifications. I think I was sweating nervously the entire game. Beyond that, I faced a variety of headaches with the missions that followed. In one case, I had to restart a 2-hour long mission three or four times because I couldn't accomplish a complicated objective by the time limit. As in other games like Starcraft, sometimes you need to lose a mission a few times before you can finally figure out how to beat it. Once you discover the nature of enemy aggression, it become easier to prepare yourself on future restarts. In Settlers IV, in particular, the enemy invasions can be brutal to the unprepared. I learned that it pays off to know your starting territory well, and that rush-building your economy might sound reckless, but will often save you when the enemy arrives. It was a frustrating journey, but I'm finally on the second to the last campaign mission. Phew.
Hoyle Casino Empire:
The Pirate Cove casino was a major pain in the butt. The objective was to generate a million dollars in two and a half years, in addition to some other crazy goals. Trouble is, a game script deducts a monthly $4500 dollars from your initial $20,000 cache for the first half year, and then you need to generate about $10,000 to hire a new firm to eradicate the monthly -$4500. That was NOT EASY. I often found myself dwindling in debt, since my stupid machines and tables weren't generating enough income. But the deceptive thing about the game is that you can't always generate enough greenbacks even if you take the right steps. I found myself playing the beginning of the level over and over and over again until I could somehow afford to eliminate the freakin' financial handicap. But that wasn't the end of it. I had only two years (or quite possibly less) to generate a million dollars, entertain 400 something guests, and obtain a stupidly high casino rating. The former two objectives were bad enough on their own, but getting the rating past 400 in that short timeframe takes crazy building. Several restarts (from a midgame save) were necessary to win. Levels like this are just too dumb to be believed, sometimes. I've got one more level to go, but I'm going to take my time with it.
Age of Empires II, The Conquerors:
I don't have much drive to complete these missions, but I like to test my skills from time to time. Playing the Aztec campaign on moderate difficulty, I made it up to the third mission, I think. I'm against a powerful alliance of Spanish and an enemy tribe. I have a computer ally, but he's in the center of the map, just ripe for enemy to destroy with little effort. That leaves me to do everything, naturally. Just surviving in this mission is pretty tricky, it seems. Walls are mostly useless, because the enemy tribe uses Petard bombers and the Spanish have their cannons. With only 3 clumps of goldmines nearby to fund an army, things look really grim. Let's face it, what good is a small army of Eagle Warriors and Crossbowmen against constant waves of Spanish with heavy artillery? I'm leaving this one on the shelf for now, and I'll probably have to drop the difficulty if I every try this mission again. I've had my fill.
Starcraft: Brood War:
Sometime ago, I decided to give the expansion campaigns another go. I didn't do bad, actually. Slowly but surely, I went through the Protoss and Terran missions; that in itself was a huge accomplishment for me. Continuing into the Zerg missions, I stopped at about the fourth mission and didn't return to it until recently. I beat two missions with relatively little trouble, but the one that followed was just nasty. "Drawing Of The Web" pits your Zerg against some very tough Protoss forces, and you cannot build an air force. The resulting scenario saw me fighting hordes of Dark Templar, Scouts, Dragoons, Dark Archons, Arbiters, and Carriers with mostly Hydralisks, Zerglings, Overlords, and a few Queens. This was one of those frustrating missions where you only get a seven minute rest period between enemy attacks in which to take action. Two Protoss enemies attacking from three or four directions can easily cripple your bases and spread your forces thin. I tell you, Guardians and Devourers would've come in handy. Upon my third restart, I started to rely heavily on using two saved game slots. That was the only way to preserve myself in the face of unpredictable disasters. If there was one thing that helped me win this mission, it was sheer ruthlessness. I had about six Hatcheries pumping out Zerglings and Hydralisks constantly from three bases, all connected by Nydus Canals. Basically, I conducted Mongol-esque raids on Protoss outposts with nearly everything I got, sending in extra Overlords because those blasted Dark Archons would always mind control the two or three I sent in. To my suprise, it really made a difference. After taking down one enemy base, I noticed that the enemy attacks were getting weaker by the moment. In the end, I just swept north, killing whatever enemies were blocking my final objective. I was losing nearly 4/5 of my huge force in that last battle, but the mission ended in victory in the midst of the fighting. I'm very pleased with this, especially after I told myself twice in the last two days that I was too frustrated to attempt the mission anymore. So now I'm nearing the end of the expansion campaigns; just a few more desperate battles to go.
