Poll Question: Vampires: the argument lives on
In the best tradition possible I will open up a separate thread just for the vampires.
Before starting the discussion as you know I will, the good part: the H5 version is by far far better than the H4. Not only the modern-age aspect was scrapped, but they brought it back to a time when the cloak fits well with the breastplate, shoulderguards, and boots. The outfit, although not impecable, is very good for my taste. But:
The sword doesn't quite fit as the other things. It is somehow asked for by the armor, but a vampire doesn't really need one. At least it looks OK, the inscription fits too, and the blade is not overdone in terms of size, shape and color like other blades from H5.
The sword might come from "Blade" because I do not know of any other reference to suggest it, but this is no Wesley Snipes. Conclusion: I'm 50/50 undecided. Much depends on the animation and actual posture in the game.
The ponytail however is monstruous. That has no reference, purpose, vestimentary role, historical backgrond or anything else. It reminds me of a samurai, but I don't see the connection.
Conclusion: has to be removed.
So now vote, please:

the pontail is alright. it doesnt ruin anything or gain it just looks alright and gives the personality of a gang sorta creature.
the sword however is very bad. vampires do not use weapons. this is obviuos to even the most dim witted individual (who has an advanced degree in rocket science)
swords must go

I like the ponytail, i even wanted to grow one but i'm not patient enough, the ponytail looks cool
but the sword is just kinda out of place, i dont like those boots, i think they should just wear brown leather boots

While I like the modern rendition (the infamous waiter ), I do agree it does not belong to the medieval world of Heroes.
As for the latest incarnation, I am undecided myself.
The sword doesn't belong here - the vampires don't need it. It looks powerful in the new screenshot, though. It reads "the wing of death", huh...? Whatever.
The collar and the boots are over the top, but I can live with them.

I think its origin is Asian indeed, or more precisely, Turkish. The Ottoman Empire played a significant role in the Middle Age in southeastern Europe. It is common to associate Vlad Tepes (Dracula) and Transilvania with vampires; the concept artist might have wanted to add an exotic touch, a pseudo-oriental feeling... on purpose or not. It's just a guess, of course.
It also gives this version a look of a young, hot-headed and rebellious noble... While the upgrade might look more dignified, older and wiser and less fierce. I am aware this is just a wishful thinking, though.

Quote: Maybe that was a non-upgraded vampire...?
Could be, but then I'm scared: what will the upgradelook like? A longer and broader sword (God forbid) and more armor? Or maybe a bigger ponytail?
Anyway, whatever the reasons the artist might have had, I hope the vampire doesn't turn into a swordmaster (samurai or not), because the screenshot of his attack looks like true martial art to me...
I hope they are considering yet the creatures and maybe change bits of them (shouldn't be that hard, right?)

the vampire comes from van helsing. he looks almost the same as dracula, ponytail and all. my thoughts on the sword are that his drain life ability is not very strong, and the sword does much more damage. i mean, being hit by the claws what the heck.

Now that explains a lot. As I said on the necropolis thread not 2 minutes ago, the modern fantasy artists are really ******-up and choose the worst possible sources of inspiration.

But if I am to follow your point, the spectral dragon should do no damage whatsoever, because he's just colored air, right?

Actually, if u wanna go realistic - the dragon is made out of information on your computer as well as coloured pixels. Those pixels & Info can hurt other pixels & info, which means that while u are relatively safe from the ingame dragon attack, the other pixels are not.
In the game though the spectral dragon probably has enough power to hurt the other forces, especially if it is a level 7 unit (h3 reference)
I guess a vampire could use a sword. It would be silly not to. At least until he can get a bite in.

I'll try a more resonable explanation about the sword. The Sucker (Bloodsucker) use it to open a wound in the enemy and then sucks the blood out of the wound. And he sucks hard, as a vacuum-cleaner, so he is able to suck the blood from afar. . Anyhow, I don't like it.

about the claws: a vampire's claws are about as big as a cat's claws, which could barley kill a peasent, and definitaly not a dragon. but the spectral dragon's claws are enormous! plus, he might bight as well, and they might have traded good offense for good defense.

I'm not sure about that... if is truth that the spectral dragon is ethereal... then they will have a very good defense aswell...

I don't know if you understood my point: the vampire's claws and teeth might be small, but at least they are real. The dragon's claws might be the size of Boeings, but they're ethereal. So I don't really see how your argument works, since the damage done in heroes is not reality-based, uh?
Not to mention that from a cat's claws you can get an infection and die. Really.

A sword is okey, but it shouldn't be that big.
I think a fencing blade would be more at its place here.
Like the one Raphael from Soul Calibur 2 has.
It shows royal blood, like a count.
But even if he will get a blade like that, it should be sheathed, to give him the royal touch, but to keep the vampire's attack methods to what it should be.

According to the artwork on the new official page, Vampire Lords have even cooler swords! What's that - blood, lightning, fire...?!

I'm too busy examining the eyes. Would you vote for sunglasses or big fly eyes? I go with the second. Geez! Terrible.

I don't like it, but I suppose it suits the 'cartoonish' theme of Heroes V... It lost it's seriousness when they made those zombies, those skeletons and those archers for Haven.

If you think H5 is cartoonish go have a look at H1 and H2 graphics again They look like something that would appear in a childrens story book.
