Question about setup
Hi,
My initial readthrough of the rules left me with at least one question:
If I've read it correctly, there's no restriction on how close opposing armies can set up? If Player A sets up first, placing his starting army on an edge hex, Player B can set up his/her starting army *right next* to Player A's army?
If that's the case, I'm wondering if it's a risk worth taking, in order to remove someone from the game on Turn One. Sure, you'd run the risk of eliminating yourself, but the risk might be worth it?
What do you think?

You can do it, but you'd better be #@%@ confidant that your starting troops are better than your enemy's, because your enemy who placed first will also get to move first, thus giving him the option of moving into his castle and waiting for you to attack, or attacking your army so that all his units fire first in each phase. Its not a strategy that has enjoyed wide success in testing, but occasionally, somone with a nature or death deck gets lucky!

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad there's a serious deterent to setting up in that manner as it seemed fairly unbelievable in terms of, *ahem*, "realism".
Plus, it's no fun to be the guy who gets eliminated on Turn One if Player B actually managed to pull off the attack.

awesome. I was wondering this myself. Map set-up will obviously have alot to say about this as well, but at least it is an option (albeit a rare one, I am sure )
Cool!
The game looks great based on smaples and rules. Cannot wait to get my stuff in the mail!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd call this evil tactic #1:
Player A sets first/last tile
Player B places army first
Player C will move his army first
(any further players don't matter for evil tactic #1)
Player C can place his army next to player B's, move first and snipe the (presumably) castle right out from under him.

The army that places first (Player B) also moves first. So Player C would move second.

Johnathan, is this true? We played it with player "C" moving first at GENCON. In the rule book it states "When all players have established their hands and Adventure Stacks, and placed their Army Markers, setup is complete, and regular game turns begin wth the next player." I read this as the next player being player C. But with the extent of damage that could be done by having player C move first, and thus incredibly hampering the establishment of player B, it does make more sense to have player B move first as well.

Hey doc, I think he kind of answered it above in the thread. I quoted him here. I can see where the wording in the rules can be read as if there is another "next" player. But I think it just means the next person after the last person places. That is the way we played in games I played with Jonathan at Gencon too.
