2 people play TCP/IP, both behind router

hey, i read in the online-problems thread and http://www.heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?FID=2&TID=12141 as well..

i want to be able to play with my friend and we are both behind routers. i enabled port forwarding for the ports the site suggested on 192.168.1.101 by logging in to my linksys router. is this all i need to do in order to play with my friend? or does he need to do stuff on his side too?

if possible i want to make it so he doesnt need to configure anything since he isnt that good with computers..

peace,-c0ld

The easiest way for him (or for both of you) would be to set your comp on DMZ. You can read here how this has to be done...just scroll down a bit.

hey angelito,thx for the response..

i read about the DMZ thing, but i asked someone about that and they said its incredibly insecure and a path to get hacked.

will heroes TCP/IP still be able to work as long as i host and he tries to connect? ive configured all the port forwarding, and he would have to do nothing?

You both have to have the ports forwarded I believe.

You seem to have no problem with that, but just in case here's my online problem solving thread in the Baldur's Gate forums. Third post down. Although angelito's thread is the best I've seen.

You might also have some trouble hosting behind a router, as with some games (like Baldur's Gate and I think Heroes) don't include the right port to forward for hosting, only for joining.

wanted to verify im doing everything correctly...

here are some screenshots..

ports opened while hosting tcp/ip game as shown in sygate. some are constant like 2350, 47624.. and some change every once in a while to other numbers..

ports i forwarded as explained at http://zonesysops.com/clips/forwarding.html. one thing i dont understand is why the site says i only need TCP 47624, yet in sygate its showing a udp and tcp port for 47624.. is this an error on the website, or do i only need to forward the tcp port?

port triggering as described on that same above website..

note: my goal is just to be able to do tcp/ip with a friend without using the zone for gaming. i added the zone port info just incase i want to try that in the future..

Your port numbers, especially refering to the trigger ports are not correct as far as i can see.
If the trigger port 6073 is forwarded, then ALL ports between 2300 to 2400 are forwarded automatically. So no need to set the trigger AND the range.
Same goes with the trigger 6667, which forwards the range 28800 to 29100 automatically.
For the 47624 port, i have to say, i only know the version UDP and TCP.....donīt think u doing something wrong to forward it for both.

Additional, iīve read about three more ports to be forwarded, which normaly are open already, but sometimes not. These portsnumbers are: 80, 443, 9999

thanks for the continued support angelito. basically the thing that is confusing me is where it says:

"These are the ports "heroes3" and the "zone" need:
2300 to 2400 UDP (trigger port = 6073)28800 to 29100 TCP (trigger port = 6667) and 47624 TCP and UDP"

( from this page http://www.heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?FID=2&TID=12141 )

maybe i understand better now though.

forward: 2300-2400 UDP
triggered range: 6073-6073. forwarded range: (none)
forward: 28800-29100 TCP
triggered range: 6667. forwarded range: (none)
forward: 47624 TCP & UDP

thx again for the help,peace,--c0ld

ps for the 80,443,9999 .. do yuo know if these are TCP/UDP etc. strange the 80 is needed as thats usually standard for http?

Some explanation about the trigger ports perhaps.
Many (older) routers have NO possibilty to enter a range of ports. You only can enter one port, forward it, and then enter the next one....and so on..
This would last forever in our case. Thatīs what trigger ports are for. You just open (forward)  this "magic" port, and all the ports in the refering range are forwarded at once.
So u either forward the SINGLE trigger port, OR u forward the range. No need to do both.

The dx8 and dx9 ports are ALL UDP, means, u need to set the trigger port 6073 OR the range 2300-2400 to UDP.
Windows Me ICS, Windows XP ICS, and UPnP-compliant NATs cooperate with DirectPlay8 to make it possible to run full-featured, DirectPlay8 sessions through the NAT. Users can host or join DirectPlay8 sessions that are hosted inside or outside the NAT. No special configuration is required.

The zone needed trigger port 6667 (or the range 28800-29100) is also to be set on TCP.

The ports 80, 443 and 9999 are TCP and are needed for the MSN gaming zone.

The port 47624 is only needed when playing dx7 applications.

This microsoft helping site about these specific ports should explain it in a more professional way

hey. so basically if im understanding things correctly...

if i want to play heroes 3 complete with a friend w/out the zone and just tcp/ip connect, all i need to do is forward UDP ports 2300-2400, and not even worry about forwarding 47624 TCP/UDP and 6073 UDP since they are trigger ports? or do i need to forward 47624 TCP/UDP and 6073 UDP in addition to 2300-2400 UDP?

it is my understanding now that i can completely ignore triggering and just do port forwarding..

sorry if im being stupid with this, im somewhat new to networking stuff but i feel im gradually making some progress. thanks for the continued support.

If only my english would be better...lol

Iīll try to give u an "imgination" about the difference between forwarding ports and forwarding triggers.

Itīs maybe a stupid example, but there is no better one coming in my mind right now.

Imagine u have a big table (3 legs) and on that table there are about 100 bottles placed. You want the table to be clean from bottles and all bottles on the ground. You have either the possibiltiy to take away every single bottle one after the other (port forwarding), or u just CUT OFF one leg of the table (trigger forwarding), so all the bottles would fall down at once. Both ways bring the solutions u want to have, but u donīt need to do BOTH to get what u want. You either do one or the other way.
