I woke up and rubbed the sleep from my eyes, these past months have been so busy. So many strange things happening here, and so much work to do. Now that it finally seems to have calmed down, it feels like it's finally time to figure out what has been going on with Valeriy - and whatever became of Bob....

After showering and dressing, I decided to set out on my daily rounds to check in on things. I watched Elvin come out of his room, looking a little bit dazed and confused. He drifted out of Headquarters without stopping to talk to anyone, which was very strange for him... usually he's the chattiest mod we have.

I decided I would follow him, and was puzzled at the way he looked around - it was as if everything was new to him. He entered the tavern and asked

"Uhh guys? Excuse me but I'm a bit lost here, can someone help me out with a few things? "

Very strange...I took Elvin's arm and pulled him aside, surprised at the way he resisted.

"Do I know you?" he asked, looking alarmed.

"Know me?! What the....Elvin, I'm Pandora, the chosen one remember? We moderate here together, overseeing the lands...is this one of those fake April fool's thingies you're pulling? I really don't feel in the mood for pranks today, now that I finally have some time, I want to try to figure out what happened to Bob..."

So my name was Elvin. The ambience started fading away as I surrendered myself to the memory. I somehow knew she was the Blue Lady, the chosen one. Abstract images of sharing some drinks in the tavern, three-way chats and penalizing found their way in my mind though I could still not tell if she was a friend or pretending to be one. Her words echoed in my ears.

..is this one of those fake April fool's thingies you're pulling? I really don't feel in the mood for pranks today..

She obviously knows things I don't but can she be trusted or did she say this on purpose? She seems amiable enough but I can't decide yet, I'll have to let her have her way for now. And.. moderating? She can't be serious, I'm sure I'd know if that was the case. Heck I'm not even power-hungry. Anyway let's play along.

Bob? That name rings a bell.

I watched Elvin's expression change as I spoke to him, it seemed he really didn't remember who he was...Maybe he just had a few too many boobins. In any case, I wasn't sure what to do with him next. Leaving him alone seemed like it could be a bad idea, if he started using his mod powers by accident it could start some trouble.

Then again, maybe if he's on his own a little while he'll find people to help jog his memory.

"Hey Elvin, why don't you come with me to the Volcanic Wastelands, maybe we can find Geny and get a little three way cross thread spam going, that might help you to remember"

We began the trek to the VW, I noticed that Elvin still kept looking around him as if he'd never been here before - to be honest, it made me feel a little bit uneasy.

Hopefully we could find more people to help him remember, and then we could start looking for Bob.

Spamming? Sure, sounds like fun.

Yeah now I was sure I could not be a mod The so called wastelands seemed a busy place with people chatting randomly or causing mischief one way or another. A guy called anti came to say hi, he seemed kinda unsettled by my behaviour. Oh well, not really in the mood to explain and certainly not when I don't know what the heck is going on. Say, some faces look familiar. If we get to spamming nobody will take me seriously so I'm covered if I say anything I shouldn't. Maybe.

Eh nevermind, at worst my eyes will bleed out of bad spam and I don't think I'm in immediate danger. Maybe I'm simply getting paranoid.

Lead the way pan!

I was walking aimlessly around the Wastelands dodging bad spam, avoiding the cloning areas and helping some promising threads to start off well.

I was bored. It was about the time when Pan sometimes came for a visit. I good three-way is exactly what I needed right now, so I headed off into the empty spaces of the VW where new threads are made in hopes to meet her there.

I saw geny walk in, and knew that this could be just what Elvin needed to get back to being his old self. I looked across the wastelands for a good place to begin, I saw a freshly built shrine of some sort with the words "I gave up on giving up on believing in Namus - the PENULTIMATE drama thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!" written in crayon above the door.

I entered first shouting to the guys

"let's start over here!!"

We started to play around a bit, and then it was time to look for a second place to visit

Aha, there's another brand new one - its sign read:

"PENULTIMATE drama thread - Is it needed?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!"

So I hopped in there and declared "First!!"

Once things were rolling in there, I looked for one last to complete our triangle

"elvin is OVERRATED!! Who is Hiimmmmmmmmm?!!!?"

Perfect, A playground with his name on it - that should remind him a bit of who he is.

We quickly lost track of ourselves, running from one shrine to the next. It was exhausting, but well worth it as we noticed the smoke starting to curl from their roofs. Soon they would be on fire - which is always a good time for a rest..

I looked over at Elvin, and asked him how he felt - he seemed a little bit out of breath but I'm sure he had a good time.

"What do you think Geny... time to head over to the Partatious tavern for a few boobins? Three ways always make me thirsty"

I collapsed on the ground, trying to catch my breath. Trying to keep with two mods as they race from shrine to shrine is never easy. Finally, I managed to stand on feet. I dusted myself off and stretched my legs before answering to Pan:

"Nothing ends a good three-way like a good boobin. Just don't forget to gran Elvin with you, judging by the look on his face he hasn't been drinking enough lately."

It was relatively late in a certain GMT +1 time zone and around that time, a young warlock walked around in the tavern with h a big bag of at least eighty letters in his hand. He sorted them out accordingly and was about to make his usual round of the gatherings in the wasteland.

Pointless to say that was me...

Along the way, I met the awesome three-way who almost ran me over saying something in the lines of boobins...

I didn't care and checked out all the new scribblings in the VW.

Suddenly, this cold realisation ran over me. Quickly, I hurried off to the tavern where I saw the last signs of life and luckily, Geny, Pan and Elvin were there. the poor bloke didn't seem to recognise me.

I turned to Pan who seemed the only with a sane mind, since Geny was lustin' to shove some boobins down his throat... or pour... The concept wasn't quite clear to me...

"So ehmm... Pan, something strange happened... I don't receive my instant notifications anymore, despite the fact that I can clearly see activity in the tower of today's posts... Do more HC campers face this problem or should I feel stupid?" I said hesitantly.

“Four months of silence and solitude as penance for your folly.”

Those last words haunted Baarta’s memory as he was left alone to carry out what seemed an eternal sentence, one bitterly prolonged by the knowledge that he was losing precious time that could be spent saving ACC by waiting here. The first few days, he screamed at the silvery walls and railed against his prison, but there would be no solace, no answer to his cries. He would have to wait and watch the giant lumbering outside, in what seemed to be yet another world that felt as if it were a million miles out of reach. Occasionally, the gigantic screen would flicker off and impenetrable darkness would flood the scene, and soon the poor illusionist began to lose his grip on what was real. The sole reminder that he served some purpose, that he mattered, was the genie’s lamp nestled away in his tunic.

The illusionist pulled it out every once in a while to remind himself that hoped still prevailed, even when the great darkness came and swallowed him completely for many weeks without end. Even with the lamp firmly in hand, Baarta began to lose sight of his hope that ACC would still be the same genie that had created him. Every passing day he remained separated from his lamp, ACC would lose more and more of his will, his identity, and soon the mad illusion RSF would be able to break him and form an unnatural pact that would make the genie his slave despite his master still being alive…somewhere. And it was the illusionist’s fault, at least in his eyes. ACC had counted on him to come quickly and save him so that he wouldn’t have to lose who he was, but Baarta was unable to even try. Perhaps, in his last fleeting moments, the one who created him would curse his name before succumbing completely to RSF’s will.

And so time passed. Slowly.

Baarta’s will had eroded as well, a magical pact was not to blame here. By the time his sentence had passed, the illusionist was no longer the calculating character ACC had created him to be. The mysterious voice had known this, and as soon as the great darkness ended he reappeared to plague Baarta’s consciousness once more.

“Your time is up, illusionist. Or should I say sharpshooter? I’m not really sure anymore. After all, if someone who is real can create and alter people like you at will, do you really have an identity at all?”

The broken man recoiled at the new dawn and the voice’s sudden crack in the silence, as afraid and unable to respond as a feral animal might have been. But he still understood. That was key. It was what the voice had wanted.

“No need to answer. In fact, I welcome your silence and will take it as acquiescence to everything I say.” Laughter pealed through the barren hall. “After all, that was our agreement, was it not?”

Baarta remained silent. The voice continued.

“Good! I suppose you seek an explanation as to where you are and how you got here, and these answers I can provide. Unfortunately for you, I have one other answer that I must withhold until you do one more thing for me. You have proven your loyalty, but you have yet to prove your worth.”

Speech returned to Baarta as he slowly came back and processed the interloper’s line of reasoning, but still no words came as he articulated the question, “What must I do?”

The voice took an almost melancholy tone as it began to describe the plight it faced, “I…need a courier. You may not know this, but you’re one of the only ones in all of HC that can even hear me. I’ve tried for many years to get those ignorant to listen, to understand my loneliness, but they could never comprehend something they couldn’t even know was there.” Bitterness began to seep into the voice. “I tire of eeking out an existence, leaving hints behind as to my existence and haunting the halls of the Heroes Community. Did you know I’ve been here for longer than even has HC, longer than Valeriy and Bob by over thirty years, and yet no one even knows who I am! I have no legacy.” The voice dipped into despondence. “People reel in fear at the unknown, and that arrogant mage in charge has even abolished the IM system that once allowed me some contact with the denizens of HC and set my status to ‘disgraceful’. He knows I exist, somehow, so why doesn’t he care? Is it so damn important that his precious subjects be as comfortable as possible that he’d shut me off completely.”

Baarta began to catch on as his mind grew more and more alert, and he recoiled as he figured out where this apparition was headed.

“You can’t have my body! I’m using it!”

The sadness in the voice melted away in an instant. “Grr, I thought I’d have broken you completely by now, but it seems all I’ve done is waste four months trying to allow you the luxury of free will. It seems you don’t even deserve that.” The voice drew closer. “After all, it’s not like I need your permission to wrest this body from you.”

Baarta suddenly felt a great cold wash over him, spreading all throughout his body, and he began to wonder if this was the last thought he would ever have. He waited and waited for his consciousness to slip away, but there was nothing but silence for the longest time.

Suddenly, the cold slipped away and the stiffness that had rolled throughout his body gave way to soothing warmth as a screamed echoed violently throughout the electric hall.

“Why isn’t it working!?” the voice asked furiously. Laughter was the illusionist’s only response. It started low and soft, then built until he was hysterical and had laughed himself to tears.

If the spirit had had teeth, the next words out of his mouth would have been said through a clenched set. “What is so FUNNY?”

“You said it yourself, specter,” Baarta replied with a newfound confidence, “I have no real identity at all. You cannot take control of an illusion like you can a real body. Besides, I doubt you can possess at all. You’d have done so years ago if you could.”

“You will regret it if you keep speaking. You forget that I am your only ticket out of here,” the voice warned, desperation creeping in as it realized the empty threats it was shelling at the illusionist were having no effect.

“Actually, I’ve had plenty of time to consider that on my own. Which is why I’m prepared to offer you a deal. But you have to do as I say.”

For once, the apparition merely listened.

“Good!” said the illusionist in clear mockery of the voice’s faded derision. “I can help your voice be heard by everyone at HC, but you have to let me out of here before your message can spread.”

“…wait a second,” the voice interrupted. “All you care about is finding your genie friend and righting the imbalance in your precious little community. Who’s to say you don’t double-cross me once we get out of here?”

“You won’t believe my word, but that is all I can offer you at the moment, so unless you want to stay trapped here forever…”

Silence prevailed for five straight minutes.

“Fine. But if you go back on your word, I will haunt you for all eternity and you will wish for the death that illusions are so often denied.”

“Then we are agreed. So how do I get out of here?”

“Hold on for just a second. I have one last question before we go. How are you so alert, so refreshed all of a sudden? Your will was eroded, your mind in shambles. Hell, you were hardly even able to speak when I first arrived. What changed?”

“I actually have you to thank for that, ghost. When you tried to possess me, you cleared my mind for the first time since The Saga was active. In a way, I owe you your voice to the people of HC because you’ve already helped me.”

“Don’t forget that,” the voice said as it faded, noticeably less hostile than it had been before. Baarta suddenly felt himself slipping back into the Bard’s Glade Pyre. Colors he hadn’t seen since before his imprisonment began to flicker into view, and he soon found himself sitting right where he’d been four months ago. The Saga’s portal hummed faintly as he glanced at what was essentially his home, realizing in wonder that his story outside of ACC’s imagination was just as exciting as the best story the genie had been able to muster so long ago. But now was not the time to reminisce. His friend was still no doubt suffering at RSF’s hand, and he had a new obligation to fulfill as well.

“Spirit?”

I’m here. The voice had taken on a decidedly more ethereal tone than it had in the electric hall.

“Thank you. I will honor my promise to help you now. What is it you wish to tell, and to whom?”

Heh, come to think of it, I’ve never really thought about what to say to them. I merely wanted to be heard, to be…acknowledged. You have provided me that honor and satisfaction. All I wish for now is that you tell the world about me, let them the HC ghost of old still exists, and you are free to find your friend without needing to worry about your vow. If I ever think of something specific to say, I’ll know where to find you.

Baarta couldn’t help but think about the fact that ACC fully intended to return him to an eternity of silent waiting in a created world, but didn’t have the heart to tell the voice that he wouldn’t be around long enough to matter. He hadn’t yet fully accepted that inevitability himself, and was now even more unwilling to submit to the genie’s will now that he had a purpose in this world. Instead of the truth, however, he found himself lying to the spirit. Perhaps it would give the ghost some peace. Or perhaps he wouldn’t be going back to the Saga at all. If ACC truly cared about him, he’d leave the thread unstable and simply have one of the moderators delete it before it could cause any irreparable harm.

“I’ll always be around to listen.”

But the illusionist had forgotten that the ghost could see his heart, and it realized right away that Baarta was lying. But it could also see the conflict that had arisen in his heart. Baarta now considered the voice that had tormented him a friend, and so the ghost responded in kind to show that he felt the same sort of gratitude.

Good to know. I thank you. A lie for a lie.

And with that, the voice faded.

Now that was a fun evening, both pan and Geny seemed to be in a crazy fun mood whose intensity was only matched by their posting pace. I learnt that I could move just as fast, it was apparent that we had done it before more than a few times. In any case I got to chat with a few other wasteland dwellers, enough to have an idea of how they think and react but also enough to tell that this place is messing with their state of mind. Perhaps they never were serious in the first place, who knows.

After we retired to the tavern I was reintroduced to the boobins, wasn't hard to understand Geny's addiction to them. Could be the drink talking but I felt safe enough, it was like I had awoken from a bad dream with my memory still fuzzy in my drowsiness.

"Hey pan, I have to ask one thing. Did you see me do anything unusual last night? Was I visited by someone? Also I want to know more about Bob."

I looked at Dagoth, surprised by his question. I have been receiving notifications, but what if more people haven't been. I wondered what that could mean  -and why it was happening.

I told Dagoth that I really had no idea, this was the first I've heard of such a thing, but promised I would investigate it soon...

Elvin then asked me some really odd questions, he wanted to know if I'd seen him doing anything strange, or if he'd been talking to anyone - and then he asked me about Bob.

Suddenly I felt a little wary of Elvin and his bizarre memory loss, was he asking me if I'd seen him do anything because he didn't know - or was he asking if I'd seen him because he feared he'd been caught up to no good.

I mumbled to Elvin that I didn't think I'd seen him - but with all the running around I've had to do lately, its possible that I just didn't notice.

I was really unsure how to proceed with Elvin, was he just a friend in need of help - or was he actually doing something he shouldn't be doing?

Just then, some spammers rolled by - obviously drunk on spamquila, I was barely able to make out what they were saying.

"....but how did shumone post sheven whole timesssh in a row?" one of them slurred.

I grabbed his arm and he flinched away, fearing a penalty.

"I - I - I didn't shwear pan, I promish!" he blabbered.

"Where did someone manage to post seven in a row?" I asked him, releasing my grip on his arm.

"Uhm.. in da... uhm.. newcomersh inn - over der" he replied, pointing the way.

So now we have notifications being lost, as well as a seven post in a row string...this can't happen without admin involvement I'm sure...It seems the basic fabric of the community is being tampered with.

"Hey guys, I need to go check out the newcomers inn.. come if you want, but I'm not sure how long I'll be"

That looks like an opportunity, not sure what for but at the very least it should give me some new insights and reintroduce me to the way of the moderator.

Count me in pan, I'm interested in the case myself plus we should uphold this forum's values lest it begins to crumble. By the way do you think it's a sign of Bob? I don't think I've ever met him, have I?
