This is one of the difficult parts in german language (and in some others). You have to learn that by heart. There is NO rule for that...sad but true.

and uh...well i can't think of anything else.
Ich habe eine frage für du. Was machen du in deine freizeit?

No...normaly u have them all in mind. If u (as native german) would use the wrong noun, it would sound "strange" and u would recognize it´s the wrong one.

No lame question.. But some small faults though.
Ich habe eine Frage an dich: "Was machst du in deiner Freizeit?"
In meiner Freizeit spiele ich häufig Billard (mit meiner Tochter), mache öfters einen DVD-Abend (Splattermovies!..), spiele gelegentlich Heroes oder gehe zu irgendwelchen karibischen Festen
Now it´s your turn to translate that in english

Actually there is a rule for "der, die, das".
der - you use it for male things
die - you use it for female things
das - you use for neutral things.
like :
der Mann
die Frau
das Ding.
With the examples its clear which one is to use. Unfortunately things got seperated in the middle ages ..so a tree was seen as "male"-attribut "der Baum", while for example a cat was "female"-attributed "die Katze".
...so in the end it is like angelito says: Youve to learn them.
But with things u can definately know that it is male or female u can give the right attribut.
examples:
der Opa der Freund der Pate der Polizist der Junge
die Oma die Freundin die Polizistin die Jungfrau
(actually "Mädchen"(girl) is female, still we write "das Mädchen"...pls dun ask me why ..learn Chinese instead )

well what is confusing is the fact that in French we have masculine and feminin.
But in German, you have neutral.
And some of the nouns are masculine in French and Feminin in German! Like the sun:
Le soleil
Die sunne (or however you spell it.)
So, is zeit = time? as in Freizeit:
Frei - Free
Zeit - time
???
Any ways, why does Freizeit have a capital "F"?

This is one of the advantage german language has. You are able to put 2 or 3 words together and create a new word
With the substantive "Zeit" (time) and the adjective "frei" (free), u can create a new substantive "Freizeit" (free time). And substantives always start with capital letters.
night = DIE Nacht
table = DER Tisch
lamp = DIE Lampe
A lamp placed on the small table u have beside your bed is called "Nachttischlampe".....1 word..
But i really don´t know why and who has created the nouns for all our words. It would be much easier, if all "neutral" things would have a neutral (das) noun, but it isn´t like that..
Die Sonne = sun
Der Mond = moon
Das Leben = life

Quote: Oh..
How do you possibly memorize every noun in german, whether its a der, die, or das noun..i'd get it mixed up.
It's not much, but german nouns which end in "e" are almost always feminine.
German grammar is very difficult. Not only do you have to know what the gender is of every noun, but the article and endings for descriptive adjectives depend on the so-called case (nominative, dative, etc.). Different prepositions have different cases.
For example, consider the following uses of "der Mann" (the man, a masculine noun).
(1) Der starke Mann spielt Fußball. (The strong man plays football.)
(2) Ich spiele Fußball mit dem starken Mann. (I play football with the strong man.)
In the first one, "the man" is in the nominative case and the nominative masculine article (der) is used and the nominative masculine adjective ending (e) is used for the adjective for strong. In the second one, "the man" is part of the prepositional phrase that follows "with". "With" is a dative preposition in german and so the dative masculine article (dem) is used as well as the dative masculine adjective ending (en). Pronouns also have different forms for the cases too, which makes it a very confusing language.
There are a total of four cases in german (nominative, accusative, dative and genitive) and essentially four genders (masc., fem., neut., and plural) and they all have their own peculiar set of endings, so there's a lot of permutations you have to know. (And get this: the dative feminine article is "der", which is the masculine nominative article!)
Not to mention the words are also in the wrong order. It's always fun to read a german sentence with six verbs all in a line at the end.
Good luck,
Corribus

I do not know how active this thread is or how dire your need is, but I am fluent in German and could help you if you are in a pinch. I do not, however, frequent this board much (in fact, this is my first post here and this is the first thread I read -- I am new to this community), and my RL duties keep me afk for more than I like (I also have a new baby!), so I am not super-reliable, but feel free to email me -- I am not quite what people (perhaps wrongly) term "bilingual", but my language skills are fairly decent and I have done professional work both in semiotics and teaching at the Uni, so I can help you out for sure.
herzlichst!
