Retaining Old Heroes
Here's my big question: If Heroes V is set in a completely new world, with new monsters and magic, then what will happen to all of our favorite heroes? What will happen to the reason we PLAY heroes?
Now, come on. Be completely honest. We all have our favorites. Mine is Sandro, definitely, and after that, Jenova, Caitlin, Christian, Shiva, and Adelaide. We all have champions that we favor, that we look for in our taverns every week on Day 1 and hope against hope to see there. I've gotten a slow start on many a scenario because I started play with some random necromancer like Aislinn or Charity--not that they don't have their strong points, surely they do--and the game just didn't FEEL right without Sandro at the head of my undead legions. If the generals and lieutenants that are near and dear to our hearts don't appear in this game, then it just won't be "Heroes."
Consider this: some of the heroes in the game have long, rich histories, even appearing in the companion Might and Magic RPG series in various capacities. Again, I use Sandro as an example: He dates back to the very first Heroes game, when there WERE no necromancers, and he had to make due as a warlock. He's been in every game since then, including a stint in Might and Magic VIII: Day of the Destroyer as the Necromancers' Guildmaster of Jadame, in Shadowspire. He had his very own expansion pack, for gods' sake--The Shadow of Death. And that expansion featured other long-lived heroes, like Gem, Crag Hack, and Yog, who can also trace their roots back to Heroes I. Then, there are the more recent favorites, like Eldeshar, Loynis, and Jeddite, who were carried over from Heroes III to Heroes IV. Now, if they can survive the cataclysm that destroyed Enroth, surely they can find a way to slip quietly into Heroes V.
So who's YOUR favorite hero, and why? Let's all let UbiSoft know WHY we play Heroes, in case they've forgotten the most important part of a good game: memorable characters.
Because, without our heroes, there IS no Heroes.

In time, those heroes will fade, and new ones will replace them. It's better to move on than to cling to the past forever. Don't forget to live.

While this is true, we must not forget those who came before. I daresay that I'll find plenty to like about various characters in the new installment of the series, but the fact remains--the Necroplis is dead without Sandro. The Sylvan town is not as green as it could be with Ufretin there. The Academy should advertise Solmyr's teachings.
Just because the future is visible doesn't mean the past should fade away! If we forgot our real-life heroes, where would be? They inspire us, and the same sort of attraction draws us to mythical and fictional heroes, as well. How many people who read the Lord of the Rings don't feel SOMETHING for the long-suffering Gandalf or patient, good-hearted Samwise? How many students of history can completely ignore the teachings of Socrates and Plato?
If we forget the past, then the future can never, ever happen. We just keep living the present over and over. I'm not saying that all the old heroes should return, or even that there should be no new heroes. I simply think that a little familiarity goes a long way towards enjoying the new game. Think of it as a marketing decision, if you like; it would be a more attractive buy for former players of the series if they knew that their favorite character was still alive and kicking in the virtual world.

Sure, they will dissappear eventually but don't just write them off, have them die maybe in a heroic fashion, like Gelu did.

Die in a heroic fashion?! You could never to that to [the HoMM 3 version of] solmyr! And what about Gem, Sandro, Crag Hack, the classics! They've been in every HoMM, you cant take them out!
If you had't guessed, solmyr is my favorite (in HoMM 3, in HoMM 4 he sucks).

I love Gem to much for her to go, and same with Aeris and Ivor. I would like to have Rebecca and Vatawna from HoMM 2 back though, but that might be pushing it. . .

Aislinn was a great hero; she and Septienna made an awesome team if you left one to guard your main castle and took the other out with your biggest army. Death Ripple and Meteor Shower... Ah, those were the days.
I never played the sorceress much, but one sorceress that sticks in my head is Carlawn. She was a pretty good heroine, except for that whole thing where sorceresses got stuck with Navigation out of the starting gate for some inexplicable, probably obscene reason. Waste of a skill slot, if you ask me.

Don't forget that this is completely new world, not connected to the old worlds, this world has it's own history, maps, events, and new herpes wouldn't fit in since they lived up to alot of time already... The new game even has it's own year counting...
But... I've heared... that perhaps we might see some old heroes as a non playable ones, like campaign heroes. But even then, they will be very few...
Also, the old heroes cannot make sence much, how they get into a new world, why, how old are they... Crag Hack should be like dead already, in Homm4 they told Gem lost her youth fountain, so she began to age... The transaction from Heroes III to IV was possible due the worlds were connected by the cataclysm, but these worlds are very unconnected in any way.

The Might and Magic series always included some sci-fi elements, including space travel. As far as I remember, the whole HoMM3 Inferno was actually aliens, and not doomed souls of the underworld.
Therefore, it should be possible to find a way to bring back old heroes without inventing new, far-fetched ideas that aren't already there.

I think the way it's being layed out, the new HoMM Universe has the power and hopefully the consistency needed to introduce new popular hero figures without bringing back the dead. Also, Woock, I believe the whole SciFi bit was one of the main reasons Ubi rennounced the old Universe.

Some Heroes should pass. For example, Crag Hack lived to long for a human, Gem started aging so in Heroes 5 she should be at least unable to seek adventures. But some, like Yog, should live. Yog is a Genie he's immortal, Sandro is a lich he is also immortal.

I dig Dracon.... he's pretty rad. Before that I used to love this guy in Heroes 2. I think his name was maximus. He was this Lizard Knight... He was funny because he didn't seem to belong very well.

I think it is totaly wrong to make a whole new world with no connection to the older ones. As it is seen in Might & Magic, there are ways to pass from one world to another, and hey magic is limitless!
I think that if you don't build a game ON the other ones, like lairs one on each other, like the previous HOMM games are, you lose the whole concept of "series". Why kill a great tradition? why cut short a winning streak? why disspose of everybody's favorites, those who were here from the start, from 1996 (or their heirs)? I am not saying you should bring every body back, but Heroes like Sandro, solymir, theodorus, some of the Ironfists (I remember that Cacherine and Roland's son, that was left at Enroth, was nicolay... the prince that is Isabells husband is named Nicolay... a link maybe?!), Gem, yog, crag hack and many more. If the game makerd do not want to have some of the old heroes, they could at least make good explanations for that. Stories of glorious battles and adventures, that may contribute to the plot. You can't just say "OK lets start it all over again"! this is not right!
I say we raise an alarm! the community is strong when united! as we had seen before, if we work together for something we make them listen!
Lets make a petition, a letter, to nival saying that we want OUR HEROES back!
If you support the idea contact me and tell me so.
If we will be numerous, I will make a thread, and all that support that idea will sign there.
