Best Creature Level...

What creature level is the best in the game?

I'm going to say that the fifth level is superior to all the other levels.  I know in most of my campaigns the fifth level has been the backbone of my army and if it is a close match it is usually the fifth level creature that pulls my butt out of the fire.  Mighty Gorgons define the fortress and keep it a worthwhile town.  Minotaurs are steady with damage absorption and fantastic morale.  Thunderbirds roc the house with speedflying and thunderbolt action.  Zealots are a good shooter and help the team out.  Pit fiends help bring out the second string team.  Liches are a great shooter in a town that desperately needs them.  Genies give that extra magic.  And I am in love with th dendroids, people always forget to attack these slow powerhouses so the have lots of power and damage late in battles.(I usually dismiss the conflux, and magma elementals are so-so)

Who said we don't talk about heroes anymore?

Who we are to talk about heroes?

I wish there would be more involved in these than in those earlier threads...LOL

Gotta agree with you. Fifth level is the backbone but I have also noticed that sixth level units have sometimes really much do with the winning when it comes units like Dread Knights. It depends really how long game you are playing and what the map size is. Also the resources play big part. I often play with fortress and Necropolis so 4/5/6 level play the biggest part. I can't really choose between the fifth and sixth level...answer lies between them somewhere...

take the zealots out and I agree with you oldtimer... there are cases though when I had to win the game with lvl4 creatures... yep, ya guessed right, Sharpshooters!!! ...by definition lvl5 are the best...

BTW: why most people DO forget the Dendroids?... I play with the Rampart all the time and even the AI forgets them... I guess because they're too slow

Level 6 I guess...

I mean: Black Knights, Nagas, Cavaliers, Manticores, Psyichic Elementals, Cyclopes, Efreet, Wyverns...

In my opinion all good creatures, when at other creature levels I can mention 1 or more bad creatures (Don't worry I won't... for now...)

Chalk up another vote for 5th level

Sure, there's some good units at 6th level, but 5th level overall has three big advantages.

The first is growth rate. It's generally 150% of the 6th level rate, which means as the weeks go by, the numbers swell mightily. In the case of the Dendroids, it's even worse, because they get a growth boost structure, so they produce at double the rate unicorns do.

The second is cost. They're a lot cheaper in all cases, so they tend to get bought when times are lean. In most cases, it's possible with a little luck to have the 5th level dwelling in week one, due to generally lower costs there as well. The result is once again more of them in your army.

Finally, the 5th level creatures overall tend to be blessed with good special abilities. They're not all as flashy as the Mighty Moos, but they almost always get the job done.

PS to Oldtimer: I think it was a great idea to split these threads up the way you did. It allows for more indepth replies without making each post cumbersome.

I agree with all said there by Unkahaakon.

Still I wish you don't edit the post later...LOL

Multiple threads is great idea. Just wish there would be more posters...maybe when I come back these threads will be huge. Who knows?
And that quality point went to right person there.

Hey, isn't there one poster who is always talking that there should be more posters that play HoMM and not those that don't even play the game? I haven't see any of this persons post in these threads...Kinda funny...

I'm gonna go off the end here and say

4th Level!!!

The help you in both the middle, beginning, and end of your game.  They have some great creatures: Crusador, Vampire Lords, Ogre Magi, etc.

They also seem to be the most identifiable creature of each town type.  When you think of Castle, you see Crusadors.  Tower, Magi.

I am right in my own mind.

Lv7: they are very difficult to get in most case especially the upgraded one. In many maps, game just over before you get any of them.

Lv1 and lv2: you use them quite often in early stage, but may just replace them with more powerful creatures later on. Besides, there are not many great lv1 and lv2.

Lv3: has some great units like griffin and elf. But they are good, not best. Also some not so good units here.

Then what about lv6? Ya, most of lv6 are great. But there is a problem ¡V building sequence and cost. Cyclop and cavalier would probably be the last thing you put into your army. Naga and dread knight are a bit difficult to get. Manticore is not much better than minotaur except flying. Wyvern is easy to get but¡K¡K¡K

Lv4: great level. You got very powerful tank units like crusader and ogre mage. You got decent shooters like magi and medusa (if you count sharpshooter, one more). You have VL. You got one of best scout/scout killer ¡V pegasi. Basilik is ok. Perhaps the only bad unit in lv4 is demon or fire elemental. Lv4 is also very easy to get (except ogre) and you can get them in week 1 without any problem and so you can get decent number of them.

Lv5 is usually the backbone of the army. Most of them deal considerable damage, can be recruited in week one. Have balanced line-up with good fliers, decent shooters and very powerful tank units. The only weakest link is earth elemental. So, no poor unit in lv5 if you don¡¦t have AB.

So, I am in between lv4 and lv5...............and finally I pick lv5 coz it has thunderbird, one of my fav, in it.

3rd to me...

I think 5th levels are often the backbone of your army, but for me I have had more games determined by how much damage the 3rd levels did, or absorbed or merely surviving till the final rounds in enough numbers to actually kill a 7th just when I needed them.

Also in the first week of the game 3rd levels are often decisive when you get them day 2 or 3 and they are the main force in your army as you expand till week 2.

Grand elves frequently distract your enemies and do good damage exploring in the early game.

Wraiths are great for scouts and even for 200% difficulty games where you can't afford more.

Dragon flies- so many benefits!

Orc Chiefs are great in larger number which you can get on many maps which include orc towers, but aside from that probably the poorest 3rd level.

Cerbei- I have won more games due to Cerbei than any unit except Mighty Gorgons.

Iron Golems- can be a total game saver. Some people just don't realize their power. Perfect for hit&run hero where your opponent has chain lightening, and also very strong in the early game as scouts. A little slower speed perhaps, but since they endure the magic bolts it's worth it. Also, a few games they really saved me as much as anything except totally magic immune creatures.

Griffons- very versatile unit and can get very large numbers, higher speed, good HP and useful special all great in 200% games.

Beholders are a very good unit, the only problem is their price, but if you have enough gold they are almost as good as Grand elves and are more durable; often they can survive a hit which would kill Grand elves and when they get free of the melee still contribute to the battle.

I've always considered the 6th overpriced compared to 5th and 4th.  Maybe they look good compared to some 7ths but value shoppers might consider 5s.

The seventh level is good, but the down side is that all creature stacks usually attack level 7 units unless being attacked by amother creature stack, I would say level six.

Well, this is an odd question.  Each ton has its own citcal level which forms the backbone of its army.  For Castle, this is Swordsman, which is a basic pile o' HP and damage.  It is, notably, a walker.  HOMM is based around walkers.  Shooters are to soften up your opponent's walkers.  Flyers are for getting early initiative and for sieges.  Castle is built around geting Swordsmen/Crusaders and supporting them.  This is n example; other towns will get briefer coverage.
Tower: Naga
Rampart: Rampart lacks a basic unit.  It really doesn't have a good walker, which is why the town is mediocre despite its high level of HP per week and low cost.
Fortress: Gorgon
Stronghold: Ogre
Conflux: This is not a real town.  This town was not playtested.  It has no strategy behind it.
Dungeon: Minotuar
Necropolis: Skeleton
Inferno: Cerberus

i duno if anyone else noticed the spelling of "rock the house" there... hehe good one oldie

COLDFYRIUS i am fyrius w/you!
j/k, hehe

but i TOTALLY disagree w/ you saying that conflux "isnt a real town"...
how is conflux not a real town??? that makes zero sense.
also, "it was not playtested"??? so you think that 3do just made the town and didnt play with it at all?  right....

and it definitely has strategy behind it simply because a lot of battles are decided by which way you arrange your conflux creatures.  the best order IMO is: (going from top to bottom)
storm el, magic el, sprite, pheonix, energy el, magma el, ice el.

IMO conflux is the best and most powerful town.
im sure you think differently. and youre entitled to your opinion...
but try to back up your points better in the future...

The main problem with conflux is its power, it can overwhelm other towns.  I think it stems from trying to put the existing elementals together in a town without changing stats much and then creating shooters out of them.  Storm elemental is actually stronger than the Ice elemental and when you get to earth elemental it is too weak for it's level.  The town overall is alittle unbalanced and overpowered, but hey its magic.  The buildings look great and phoenixes were missed.

Conflux

I don't think NWC needed to add a +4 growth of pheonixes in the conflux. Maayybeee 3 but four is just too unbalancing.
25 hp for a levl 2 creature which is better than all level 3's is kind of unfair as well. Also all might heroes suck for this town!

Oh yeah, although level 7's define the town IMHO I always find that level 5's are the last one's standing (besides thunderbirds) and most easily stockpiled for me so i tend to like them the best.  I think maybe because they are often ignored (slowness) or avoided (crazy specials).

I disagree with Goldfyrious.
Best and most useful units for Castle are Arch Angels. Why so? Because they can resurrect and if u have expert water magic and a clone with high numbers of Angels your army is almost unbeatable.

Tower: Titans (Nagas just arent shooters)
Rampart: Either Grand Elves or Gold Dragons. I prefer Elves.
Stronghold: Ancient Behemoths. They are the main reason why the stronghold army with haste is feared. And Ogres are too slow.
Fortress: Mighty Gorgon
Dungeon: Black Dragon. One Blackie is worth 5 minotaurs.
Necropolis: Skeleton.
Inferno: Efreet Sultans.
Conflux: Phoenix
