The ICTC has got a new objective

The ICTC was started as a way to allow the best non-russian entries to be translated and submitted to the official Nival contest. At that time Nival only accepted entries in the russian language, so the ICTC wa the only way for non-russian speakers to participate in the official contest.

This has changed now, as Nival are accepting entries in english - according to this quote from Heroes 5 producer Fabrice:

Quote:

Notwithstanding HeroesCommunity's own contest, Nival IS accepting entries in english. Their own contest ends the 28th of february, so you have much more time.

You should use the guidelines posted here : http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=16795
and return your entry at this adress : heroes@igromania.ru, as well as Nival, just to be safe

You can read the original post in this thread: http://forums.ubi.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/1851065692/m/3591072704

---

This new situation should make us rethink the idea and objective of the ICTC. Instead of being a ´qualifying round´ allowing the top three entries to be translated and submitted to the Nival contest, every ICTC entry can now be submitted by their own authors.

In the light of this I have three suggestions:

Extend the voting period to february 20th
Valeriy no longer has to spend precious time translating the winning entries to russian.
This contest now has more than 60 entries - far more than anyone had expected i guess. We need more time to rate these properly.

ICTC authors should use the feedback they receive from reviewers to improve their entries and submit them to the Nival contest
Allthough we cannot change and improve on the entries posted on this forum, nothing stands in the way for authors to continue to work on their entires on their own computers. If we use the great feedback this compettition grants us, we can improve our entries before we submit them to the Nival contest.

Reviewers should post suggestions as well as ratings
I know there are many entries to rate, but if every reviewer submits just a single constructive criticism in addition to their rate - it would be a great help to the authors.

I think Val still has to translate them because the contest is somewhat of a partnership with a Russian Gaming Magazine (I hope I'm not wrong, I can't exactly remember the context I got that info from ). But I agree, the way reviewing is going, we need more time.

Actually this changes everything!!!

Why only extend the voting to the 20th of February, how about making all entries editable again till the 28th.

It would allow authors to further improve their towns, instead of submiting different versions to the contests.

Editable? No way, Jose! This would mean that I've been rating my ass off for nothing as I would have to re-rate. Don't play with a student's wasted intersemestrial hoiday, man!

Why not extend the spamfest indefinately? It has become somewhat a sport to weed through the ICTC jungle in search of real posts that I would like to read

Especially now that there is no longer a rational reason for ICTC, other than keeping it alive for the sake of keeping it alive, the spamfest must be motivated by more belief in it - thus the longer voting period as a way to negate the fact that ICTC is no longer needed.

ICTC has achieved escape velocity, and left reality behind. It no longer serves the purpose it was designed for, but has become a monster that is alive for no other reason than to go on.

So what remains of this admirable contest that was interesting at first? Alot of creative input, alot of old stuff remixed too. Alot of invested interest and preparation that now can shine in the Nival input system. Great preparation of great towns. - Many good things.

But for those that are not part of it, its the worst spamming that the HC has ever seen. I know that h5 is a huge part of HC now and that ICTC is an important event, but for the people that have visited this place for years I think nobody would be disappointed if we never saw another ICTC post in the newest 10 replies for a few months, less it be a joke

I know that ICTC is important for alot of people, and that the voting is sort of a reward for the time invested in this, to feel the result of the efforts. And that extending the voting is a way to increase this reward, now that the actual prize is perhaps no longer necessary, as it has in a way been given to everyone

But, just to teach you alittle about motivation. Many so called "doomsday cults" that believed that the world would end a certain time, kept to themselves about it until the actual moment came.  BUT when the world did not end, they were proven to be wrong. HOWEVER, what they did then, was to develop ways to tell everyone else about their teachings, as a way to bring life back to their belief. Because the actual reality had been punctured as a baloon, they needed to bring back their belief in their group and community.

I think this extended voting period does the same thing for ICTC.

Btw, I think ICTC was a great idea, and that alot of people had fun with it. Although I personally would like to see it go into the history of HC, I understand that it will be here for quite some time probably, and maybe take up 50-70% of the threads.

I just wanted to say that it doesn't have to be like that. ICTC was great, and the best part about a great thing is that you can let go, and leave it behind. Quit while your ahead so to say. Live fast die young leave a beautiful corpse.. Instead of dragging it along to get every bit of artificial life out of it until there is nothing left but a shriveled shell of empty dreams.

Let it go...  - if ICTC loves u it will come back

love u guys

GL & HF I meet u on battlefield in H5 !! I r the strong-dar!!

I must admit that I never considered the fact, that the ICTC is clogging up this board for any other users... but please don´t blame the contestants or reviewers for this. Its more of a design error in the competition itself... And I don´t really think its fair that whenerver I leave feedback for another participant you would call it spam.

When I suggested to increase the voting period it was mostly a question of fairness: because I realized I wouldn´t be able to rate all the town entries within the time limit - and I guess I´m not the only one.

But lets just keep it at 15th of feb. as originally planned - so things might get back to normal on this board...

@Bjorn: In a few days all this fuzz will be over and you will have your board back. Thanks for hosting this event (you as a regular to this board, and me as a newcommer I consider you one of my hosts... ).

Best wishes

Thank you for your kind reply. It's probably not that important really.. my post was more a way to express general frustration about the ICTC, is is exaggerated for dramatic effect

At the HC, many users like to call things "spam" even if its not. The ICTC has brought in alot of new people, that I hope will stay here afterwards cause this is one of the best places on the net  Everyone is really nice, and although we call people spammers sometimes, its more like Tom & Jerry chasing  eachother than anything else.

Being called a spammer means we like u, and well, although there's been alot of ICTC lately it wouldn't be too bad if the voting went on for a bit. I'll be ok, and Im sure everyone else will too.. I don't want to take away the joy from people about their ICTC.. :-)

Just wanted to express this, as some form of art. The last thing I would want is to be taken seriously

And if ppl want to play when h5 comes out my handle will be bjorn190, or something do to with pheonixes

Sure I have nothing against you guys voting your ratings just that one person that posts 40 replies in 1 hour is realy ovewhelming and makes it harder to find anything else than ICTC posts.

Maybe you should limit your ratings 5 towns per day or something cause if 10 people vote 40 times in one hour it will be 400 posts!!! And tell me who got the patience to read through all of them?

I fail to see how the ICTC is clogging up Heroes Community. HC has 14 open subforums and the ICTC is restricted to just 1 of them. I mean are we talking about a serious issue here or just the lazyness factor involved  in not wanting to browse each subforum for new posts but have them all in "Today's Posts"?

well the question now becomes "can we request to not be submitted with the rest of the group?" for those of us with incomplete entries, or entries that the creators feal the need for some polish.

the idea behind not being submitted with the group would be so entries arent submitted multiple times (itic and indivualy submitted) and are disqualified because of it.

unnesessary?  hmm. we should I guess look for some necessary posts then

If rating was limited to 5 per day then all towns could not be rated in time TNT.  It wold also consume an even greater amount of days from the raters.

use the scroll, the indexes, and get over it

First of all it's disappointing to see the reaction of some HC oldtimers. We are actively doing something to take HC into the age of H5, and you whine about our initiative, for the sake of preventing HC's handful of H5 threads from sinking in the list, and to avoid you an extra click or two in searching for recent posts. ICTC Ratings are not spam. Whining about ICTC is spam.
Stop whining and do something constructive, like stating an interesting thread about H5 that won't sink because people are replying to it. Or maybe you prefer this to be a H3 board where less people go every day so we can once again whine about the good old days?

About the contest, as I said in the other thread:

Quote:
Nival will indeed accept entries in English. However, the contest is being conducted in association with a Russian gaming magazine, which might want to publish the entries. I doubt they want extra trouble of translating the entries, and hence the non-Russian entries could suffer. Translation ensures that if your entry wins, the magazine can easily publish it.

Given that Nival will accept entries in English (and hopefully judge them equally with Russian entries) ICTC indeed takes on a slightly different role. Firstly, of course, the prizes and recognition for the winners. Secondly, lots of feedback for improving your race design.

As explained in the quote above, we will still be doing translations, and the contest will not be extended because we need time to make our own ratings - a lot of work for the judges, and good translations. There are still few days left for ratings and I suggest everyone makes all the ratings they intend to make.

Once we have the winners selected, each of the winners will have a choice about whether they trust unbiased judgement of English language entries and prefer to have a week to further improve their entry instead of having it translated. Winners who choose translation will have translation. Winners who choose no translation will have the round of final feedback from the community, where everyone's aim will be to help the winner make top final refinements. Each of three winners will have to make that choice: translation or another week of refining.
____________
You can wait for others to do it, but if they don't know how, you'll wait forever.
Be an example of what you want to see on HC and in the world.

I know you want what's good for HC but I don't think the ideas that where posted here will get any farther than a simple entry.
The russian players are known to be the best nation in heroes playing ability so they must have soooo many ideas for towns themselves and do not need any outsiders help.
Other thing I noticed is that most of the participants don't use english as a mother tongue thus making it harder for them to express their ideas at the maximum details. But the Russians do not have this problem as they are entering the contest using their national language which makes it easier for them to explain everything without leaving crutial stuff out.

Alright. Lets hope that many of the ICTC posters remain on this board once it's over.

ICTC is of course a way to promote the board to new people, which is a good thing. Change always discomforts those that are used to the old ways, but change must still happen. The reactions should not be dissapointing, but expected by the educated mind. It is always like this in organizations.

Focusing on the new brings focus off the old, and it is a fine balance. When homm5 comes I hope that this board enters a new golden age and will become as important to heroes 5 that it has been to heroes 3.
