Titans vs. Black Dragons

heh heh    NOT WHAT YOU'RE THINKING

Everybody knows that Black Dragons and Titans hate each other but has anybody actually wondered "why?".  Perhaps there is an official explanation somewhere, I don't know.  But I came up with this story a while back to explain how the animousity came about.  If anybody else has some ideas, please post them.

In the beginning were several different agents, among the most powerfull were the primal law and the aerial force. They conjugated and one of the children who was born was the black dragon. The black dragon was the most terrible of all though because firstly he came with a shroud of thunderstorm and secondly because unlike other creatures which reach a maximum size, the black dragon never stopped growing. His appetite therefore, which started out small, became ever more gluttonous. As the most fearsome creature in existance he was worshipped by the prehumans, first out of awe and then, when the gluttony become ever more voracious, out of terror. And still he kept growing. Entire races, completely unknown to man, were devoured and disappeared from the earth forever. The titans were aware of this and realized that they were the only ones that could stop the black dragon before he consumed the entire earth. So they went to the Borogim (who were the ancestors of both the dwarves and gnomes) and learned the arts of metallurgy. They went to the aerial spirits and learned the secrets of the storms. When the time came for the battle, the Titans had learned the secrets of the lightning and the storm and were thus able to steal them from the Black Dragon, leaving him weakened. He was still too powerfull to kill though so they threw him down into a pit a thousand leagues deep, which they then filled in with dirt.
Mother earth was not too pleased at this development, for it was like a grain of sand in an oyster. The dragon asked Mother Earth to be released but that wasn't in her power. Mother Earth had the power of creation though so she told the dragon her idea and the dragon agreed. Soon a legion of small dragons started growing inside the Black Dragon, devouring him from the inside out. They ate and ate until the Black Dragon was finally consumed and the small dragons began their arduous journey back to the surface, carrying the memory of their defeat at the hands of the titans.
When the first ones started to reach the surface, many eons later, they discovered that the world had changed. The Titans had formed an abiding relationship with the mountain wizards. New species, like the humans and their kin had meanwhile spread across the globe. The Titans, discovering this new plague coming out of the netherworld, and remembering the depredations of the great Black Dragon, reacted instantly and violently to any black dragon they saw. The dragons meanwhile, realizing that they didn't have the power to resume their former status as lords of the air were forced to make an alliance with the fiefdoms of minotaurs and their other underworld allies in order to reclaim what they believed to be rightfully theirs. And thus it is that Black Dragons and Titans have come to hate each other.

From five years into the future I bring the wisdom. Would you not be very fond if you were told you were nr. 1? The strongest of all the units? That no one could beat you?

Then imagine it was true, except for one obstacle, one unit, who simply matches you and in the most common used situation actually defeats you? That's how it must have been for the Titan when he first laid eyes on the magnificient Black Dragon.

"What can a tiny and puny little dragon do to me?" Did the huge Titan wonder, after all, not only did he have the size on him, he'd strong battle armor and in previous times, only Zeus had managed to defeat him and his allies. But when the Dragons breath hit, after the Titans had made an otherwise impressive first strike, it soon became clear that all the praising and all those promises were only empty words. In the end, the Titan were only nr. 2. Imagine the sadness of being born into a world as a king and find you're only nr. 2.

How about the Dragons? Well how would you feel when you have to hear at every second tavern you come by, that you're no match for the mighty Titan, whom your younger sibling, the Red Dragon could defeat just as well? How would you feel as the mighty Black Dragon, going to show everyone that you're nr. 1, when in battle, the Titan is getting guarded by units moving earlier than you and you cannot wreak havoc fast enough to reach the Titan, before it's too late. Your fellow oh so powerful units have barely crossed the battle field or have already been destroyed, while you, the otherwise so mighty Black Dragon, find yourself at the mercy of the Titans due to nothing but simple tactics.

In the end, being nr. 1 combined with this uncertainty of who shall win (all depending on the situation of the battle and how well each player plays) and the strongly divided opinion throughout the kingdom, makes it little to no surprise that these fearsome creatures hates eachother so much that when they attack one another, they do so with extra strength and ferrocity.

After all, is it not only in Heroes 3 this hatred exists? In Heroes 4 it's a new world and everyone now agrees that the Black Dragon is the strongest unit, so no reason for these two to hate eachother anymore.

If you think about H3 b.dragon-titan rivalry, then...

Titans\giants are construct made by the wizards with the use of the Ancients' technology. They are made for protectors and ultimate machines of war.
The warlocks must have something to stop these creatures. And they known for their genetic-manipulation and magical alteraton (harpies, evil-eyes and such things...) they breed a new kind of dragon or just made the already existing blacks stronger and tamed to counter the titans.

Basicly they are cold-war equipment of the planet where the Heroes games plays (Antagarich and Enroth are just continents...)...
