The last time I played Academy and, in full fledge battle with the Inferno's Champion Hero's army, well, first of all, I had Storm Titans instead of the sluggish and slow Titans. Since, I knew that Nightmares were going to be in the enemy's alignment, I simply put the Obsidians and Overseers right in front of my Lightning Bolt Shooting Storm Titans. And, put the Steel Golems right next either side of main protection grid of units + Djinns on the side that the Golems were not. The Saboteurs on either extreme sides(behind a rock or log preferably or, a lava fissure)and, the ArchMages on the opposite extreme side of the tactical grid(once again: behind any natural obstacles that a walker can not go through).
Once the battle is started, try to knock down the Imps(fliers) with your Saboteurs. The Archmages do as much damage as they possibly can with the Fireball where the Leapers are(hoping to do as much damage that you can at the other units surrounding the Leapers). Storm Titans(whenever their turn gets by) to concentrate on rather the Succubi Mistresses or, Pit Lords(usually the Pit Lords, since they will not automatically retaliate and, the chain shot will not affect the Storm Titans much due to their constant electricity and storm clouds shielding them-immune to fire based attacks).
Well, that really sets the stage for a perfect attack/defense's Chess like tactical positions to begin with. The rest of the decisions are, after all, up to you to strategize. Good Luck.
Hint: A very strong sense of good luck and, Leadership for high morale will, unfairly of course, balance in your favor for most of the battles.

now I'm wondering something. does the aura of element vulnerability of the marble gargoyles enhances the power of some creatures' abilities? (like lightning call, call of the storm, liquid flame breath, searing aura...)

That's something I never tried, it's worth a shot. Btw at some time I noticed my titans were dealing double damage with call lightning and next week it was gone. I did not change artifacts as far as I remember so it was probably the week. I think it was week of fire and ice, anyone experienced something similar?

The marble gargs superpower the Obsidian Golems, I believe. Do Marble Gargs increase damage from elemental chains?

I won that battle, but my point is I don't find Titans any bit useful cuz I feel that the money spent on the dwelling and creatures could be better spent elsewhere. Plus I normally don't have enough of them for them to deal sufficient damage.

He means elemental gargoyles. About titans they still are your backbone and can take a beating. If you have good knowledge you can customize them nicely, +25% initiative and +3 luck would be nice

Elvin, you never had a problem blocking them from being rushed, I have to decide whether or not to block titans or mage/gremlins instead. I find using golems/gargs/mages/gremlins all with hp and defence artifacts can hold a battle really long until i kill the enemy with my spells.

Sure I did, there's no guarantee they'll be able to shoot more than once I prefer to cover up titans better, it's them that do most of the damage. Generally my units stay back in formations and the only mobile unit are the djinns and maybe golems but that's not always good. For instance gargoyles with init/speed artifacts can block an enemy shooter etc. Also going all defensive does not allow you to use your units' potential, initiative and attack can deal some nice damage before the opponent plays. If you are afraid you'll get blocked you could try to get swift mind and puppet/frenzy on charging units or blade barrier in front of your shooters. There is no clear strategy, depends on your spells, time of the game and opponent.

If you play those ridiculous hourglass-like maps where you can, as samiekl hinted, go up to 50 knowledge, it's a waste NOT to get your upper tier units, since you can get them +50% initative and make all of them cross the battlefield in their first turn, even rakshasas.. oh wait, and dashed rakshasas with 30 initiative, how does that sound?

There you get extra colossi too Don't know about 50 knowledge but I had managed 40 spellpower with dungeon

i'll give it a try. I almost always get Summoning, and either dark/destruct depending on the spells. What do you think of Light magic for academy?

It suck's,there is no real fun.Also you can pick Dark over light (exept if you are going against necropolis).

here is my suggestion for academy (i've also set up dungeon & inferno )
hero: IHORA
Skills:
expert war machines. catapult, remote control, tremors
expert enlinghtment: intelligence, wizards reward, mentoring
expert sorcery: arcane training, counterspell, arcane exellence
expert artificier. magic mirror, mark of the wizard, consume artifact, ARCANE OMNISCIENCE
+
expert leadership. estates, diplomacy, artificial glory
expert attack: archery, battle frenzy, retrebution
creatures: 3332222
gremlin saboteour, elemental gargoyle, obsidian golem, archmage, djinn sultan, rakshasa raja( longer survival rate ( no retaliation ability + higher stats than ksathra)), titan
what do you think
