Be gentle. Not everyone is a veteran.
My advice is don't (mis)underestimate consume(r) artifact ability.

Well yes but I cant see any logic in such a behaviour. You start with powerful hero, with around 80 Gremlins which will grow stronger later and you start with War Machines and then you are sending him for resources? Strange strategy... I hate playing vs Havez, he takes on group of Treants at the start of week 2 and I have to stare at that wait bar for 15 minutes...

You can do that with any faction too.

Quote: That's no strategy, that's a simple warmahine rush with one of the fastest earlygame heroes(if not THE fastest). He can kill anything in his path, even lots of mages within the first week..
I agree with you, this isn't a strategy. But I didn't know how to else say: "This is the way I usually play with my favorite faction: Academy!! Yaaaaaay!!" So I just said strategy.
Quote: Blasphemy...
You havent seen him on late game... Those 500 Grems are scary...
+ Plus he is considered a power hero among ToH-ers
+ He creeps like insane
Ok, but what else has he got in lategame? And what is creep?! I know I'm a big noob, but what is that?!
Quote: Be gentle. Not everyone is a veteran.

No, I'm not. I've just played this game for like a coupleo of months, and I'm only finding the best heroes and fine factions.

Ok, in early game, what else should I use him for, if the only real important thing (for me) is resourses?!
Thanks all for the comments!

Creeping is dealing with the neutrals, killing things for xp I think he means that picking up resources with a main is a waste of time and movement, better to use a secondary hero to pick up stuff and flag mines.

One advantage about academy (imo) is that all its heroes are generally usable and pretty even. I know Faiz's vulnerability doing (miniscule) damage is laughable, but even then, he can be useful, and that is not mentioning the more powerful heroes (Jhora, Nur, Havez).
For other factions, I guess some people would curse their bad luck when they start with certain heroes (and they are regarded as "not useful").
So, whichever hero you start with, just play according to his/her strengths, while finding ways to cover up their weaknesses.

And even if there's only one crappy hero in a faction you're still guaranteed to play with a good or at least moderate hero, because you can use the one you hire from the Tavern in the first day.

Hello! I'm new to HOMM5 and have been a long time fan of the series. And always a long time fan of the wizards, especially in H3!
Thanks to all posting in this thread, it's been very informative. As a newbie of course I have to spend time learning more about Arcane Omniscience... ... just because!
I'm not sure if it was discussed in this thread, but has it been mentioned before that several of the Wizard heroes do not have the ability to get Arcane Omniscience? For example One hero starts with basic enlightenment as a skill and Intelligence as an ability. Well this uses up an ability slot when you need scholar, wizard reward, and graduate.
Seems kind of silly, don't you think? Sorry if it's been discussed before. I haven't even finished the thread much less researched Strategies, there's just so much to read! But is that a design flaw? Did they intend some heroes to be nerfed? And do you find Arcane Omniscience rather late coming in the came (so far I've only made it thru one map where I made it to level 30 and had even the remotest chance of getting Arcane Omniscience).
TIA!
EDIT: oops, I mean Arcane Omniscience, not Mark of the Wizard.

You are confusing Mark of the Wizard (ability to cast spells at 2 targets) with Arcane Omniscience (Wizard's Ultimate perk which gives you all spells with no mastery).
Every Wizard hero can get MotW as long as they upgrade their Artifacter racial - Here you have a Skillwheel which should clear the misunderstanding

Oops, you are right, so please reread my post replacing it with "arcane omniscience" when applicable

Yes some heroes are unable to get Ultimate Abilities. But just know that the ultimate abilities are not all the fun of this game. Actually they are taking the fun from choosing your own skills (since you'll have to get the specific prerequisites), and sometimes they are not even worth the trouble.
So in 90% of the time I recommend to not aim for the ultimate but you play as you wish

The thing about arcane omni is that so you can cast any spell...if you don't have expert mastery in the school and/or a few perks, the spells aren't that great even with high spell power in most cases.
Its not a great ultimate compared to Urgash's Call (best) or Elf/Dwarf, or Orcs or even Necro.
For Academy in long games, I would rather focus on 2 schools (mix it up for fun) enlightenment, sorcery and logistics or luck.

Oops ...retract the expert thing then. I've only had it in the campaign and the spells seemed pretty weak..the point about the perks stands though!

actually if there is a memory mentor, any academy hero can get arcane omniscience.
i guess the key thing lacking for arcane omniscience is mass spells, but i guess that counts as perks for individual magic skills

I'm not sure I get this. To get the ultimate ability you need 5 specific skills to expert, each with 3 specific abilities, plus two of the three unique abilities.
For example, look at Nur. She's a popular choice for her mana regen, but it's that same ability that blocks her. She starts with basic sorcery, which you need, but she also has mana regeneration as one of the abilities under that. Under sorcery, the three abilities you need for arcane omniscience are Arcane training, counterspell, and erratic mana. The mana regen blocks a spot, preventing you from ever getting it.
But this is just an analysis exercise. I've managed so far to get one hero the thirty levels required before I found this out about that specific hero. It takes a lot of effort to bypass all magic but summoning until you get to level 31-35 when you can actually take advantage of this ability. Not so sure any more that it's worth it.
If that's not what you mean, please clarify

in some maps there is a particular place you can visit that has a guy called the "memory mentor." for a specific price he will allow you to forget a skill and choose another one. in my opinion aiming for the absolute ability without one is folly, unless you have mentoring.

By the time your hero reaches the Ultimate ability he propable already has all/most of the spells you're going to use. Arcane Omniscience gives you all but with no mastery, so they're crappy. You're better off with Magic Inshight + Book of Power artifact so you can learn all lvl 1-4 spells. And Academy has a wide range of choices in it's castle anyway. I think Wizards Ultimate is one of the worst there is

All spells are cast at expert level with Arcane Omniscience.
