Ranged attackers in melee combat
I think it should be possible for ranged attackers to attack with their melee weapons, without standing next to the intended victim. For instance, a titan would be able to walk to the middle of the battle field to attack a crusader, even if no units stood next to him. You could press the "shift" button to get the sword icon, and not press it to get the arrow icon.
What do you think?

Melee penalty
Melee penalty should stay but some units should have a melle bonus like the Were-dragon (see Egypt topic).

Ranged attackers
I agree, Mystery. But what do you think of the first suggestion in this topic?

Think about it
It can come in handy if u have a fast shooter and need to get away from a group of monsters(near u but not touching yet) and also do some damage.
Also u'll be able to get close to opposing archers(or slow guarding units) and do damage at same time again.
Good idea!

also...
I think shooters should be made like in King's Bounty so that a shooter can walk a little and then fire.

i think range units should be able to move AND fire.. its not an unheard of concept, but of course accuracy is reduced, so the potential damage done after moveing should be lowered.

interesting idea anfi
I would like that too, however it would be too good for a lowly skilled archer to run and shoot. prehaps it should be given out as an ability for some archers, or as an award for a hero, and than all the archers in that hero's army may run and shoot. Hmm there is a new concept to think about hero awards or medals, like artifacts but no allowed to be traded among heroes. Maybe earned through special quests.... Maybe I should make a new thread for this one

Ranged attackers and Melee
What on Erathia are you guys talking about? Allowing ranged units to move AND fire? Hell, they can already decimate an army at a distance and besides, the whole point of trying to engage them in melee is that if you manage to get that close, they lose their advantage. By allowing them to move and attack, then that effectively means that no unit in the battle is safe from their attacks. You guys just have to think harder on how to keep the enemy away from your archers/titans/orcs/whatever. Make sure they're protected and you shouldn't have a need to run away from toe2toe. I reckon you guys rely on ranged units too much and are just plain old cut when you get stopped from firing just because a few measly imps wanna cuddle...

oh contrair
if thats spelled right....
anyway, YEAH they should be able to move and shoot, and there should be battle area behind where your army starts, and in order to flee you should have your troops behind a certaint line,
this adds to the stradgety, with this you could surround your enemy, keeping them from running,
back to topic, the shooters should have low movement regardless of speed, for instance, if the mage has a speed of 9, he should get 4.5 (round which ever way you think apropriate) movement, and you must hold shift while moveing to say "i'm movinng AND shooting" same with things like pit lords and their resurection thingy,
also, more creatures should have actual abilities not just spell side effects,

Choosing attack system
To Calorfimbor:
I agree with you. The player should be able to choose between the ranged and the hand-to-hand attack mode of his shooters. The perfect example are Medusa Queens. Sometimes they are more useful with his stone gaze than with his arrows, but you can't use that paralyzing strike if the enemy keeps apart.
There are other uses. For instance, you can use wandering spendable shooters to attack the dendroid guards, taking their retaliation, or to block the enemy on the battlefield (using the obstacles) and do some damage at the same time. The CAPS key, pressed at the same time your cursor points on the enemy unit, seems a easy way to implement this.
About the melee penalty, and the run and fire possibilities, I think they must remain as they are, except as specials to a few units. It will be very unbalancing if all the shooters could run away and then fire back, but this could be a very cool special for a high level shooter or artifact.

Really cool ideas. A hotkey assigned to change between hand to hand and shooting mode is not so difficult to implement. It is needed sometimes.
For other ideas I agree with Sikmar.

Perfect Point
To Sikmar
I have never thought of using Medusas to walk up to an enemy and engage them with the stone stare, but now that you mention it, it's not possible. Yes, I agree, you should be able to move between melee and ranged attacks if the enemy is at a distance. I like that.

What about adding a way to do a hand-to-hand attack with fairie dragons when they prepare lightning or another direct offensive spell?

Taking retaliations
Aha!, Faerie Dragons are other unit needed from this double attack mode, specially when your units are in close combat with the enemy and a Firewall or Meteor Shower spell launched by the Faeries can damage them.
And by the way, other use for this double attack is to take the retaliation from the enemy with a little unuseful shooter stack and let your strong stack attack without danger.
