My personal favourites are
Heroes 2
1stly, one must understand that HOMM2 is a very old game therefore we cannot judge it via graphics wise. The later HOMM also builds on the success of HOMM2. And why heroes 2 despite being such a old game still rank tops in my list?
Heroes 2
1. is uber balanced. I can use ANY team and still play comfortably with it. Random selection is no problem.
2. Each town is drastically different with different number of upgrades. Although all mage guilds still reach lvl 5
3. What it beats the other in the series is that it have different number of upgrades and stuff, as reflected in the later series, not everyone have to be equal. Some creatures can have no upgrades, some have one, and some have 2. It all adds to the uniqueness of the game. Predictable storyline, however it lets you branch.
Heroes 5
1. Its pretty balanced
2. Good combi and unique touch
3. good graphics
Therefore holds as 2nd place
Heroes 3
1. Many races but totally imbar in some and useless races/creatures. Knight is like totally imbar, others like fortress and inferno is totally crapped.
2. Great expansions and thought out concept
3. Good campaigns.
Heroes 4 is probably the worst game in the series, with. the only thing worth mentioning is their tree system. Similar to disciples as well as their carriage system to transport troops between town. Hate multiple heroes and independent creature system, makes the whole game way messy. Good story and campaign though.
I think like all great games, they must first be balanced.

I dunno, I think Homm4 is pretty nice, especially since I tend to win at it more than all of the other Homm games strangely enough. (Order and Death kicks some serious butt!)

People are always arguing about the balance between factions in HV, whether one is overpowered or not and so on and so forth... IMO the balance is much better than it was before and there is no "must have" skill -not even logistics or dark magic. If you don't experiment you can only get bored and the thing that makes HV a great successor to III is that it has so many options to explore so that two heroes will rarely have the same abilities. If you always go for the same pattern you become predictable and that is something one should avoid at all cost.

That being said I do miss Crag Hack.

crag hack is mentioned in H5.
anyway I like H4 the most in the series. I have tried heroes 3-5 and 4 was the one I liked the most, heroes three was meh. and heroes 5 was better but still a little bad. although I liked the system of heroes 4 better and just loved the gameplay and everything.

No problem, I posted my own template in the thread itself (it can easily be customized). I based it on a Heroes III map we used to play with my friends, one with every faction represented (so no faction has more than one town) and a big neutral zone in the middle filled with goodies, buildings and artefacts... of course it has enormous monster stacks. I like the challenge of facing lots of Tier 6 or 7 monsters (or hundreds of lower tier creatures). Of course that is not a template for quick games or straight fights between two players. But that's the way I like to play the game. Other templates are much more suited to multiplayer games. Be sure to check what zilonite and the_teacher have posted, they explain everything there is to know in order to make your own templates.

Homm 3
I must say that all of the games are soooo good. But one that stands out is by far homm 3. The atmosphere of the game and the balance. Far great. The game stands on its legs as the original game of the trilogy. I have played all the games but Homm 3 took time of my day. This was my childhood game.
Better yet a top 5 list: Homm 3, Homm 5,Homm 2, Homm, Homm 4. Homm 4 lacked many things.

Tough choice, but had I to say just one I'd go with Heroes 5. It's balanced, it's 3D.
Then Heroes 2 in a very close 2nd position. The art style is unmatched. Timeless classic. An example of what the human mind can achieve when it's used well.
Heroes 3 is also very close to those two. Probably the most solid game of the HoMM series, but this doesn't mean it has to be necessarily better. Having the Succession Wars mod make this one even better.
I need more time to make a judgement on Heroes IV. It has a few flaws, but I am liking what I am seeing overall. Not over Heroes V for me though.
My opinions are subject to change. I am a newbie and got all the games of the series at GoG.com recently.

If it wasn't for those annoying bugs and incompetent programming,I'd vote for Heroes V,but since it has many flaws I voted for Heroes III.
I mean what do you do on that series?.Do you play Hammer of fate 2.0 to face a lot of errors and slow A.I.?.Do you play the original and have less options and no rmg?.Or do you play Tribes of the east and have repeated town music that spoils everything?.
It's these type's of bad designs that ruins a software's success.

For me Heroes 2 is the ultimate HOMM game.
It had great art design and feel. I know its dated these days but i feel it has more character than the later titles.

I don't know H4 but I enjoy all the rest.
For me H5 stands a bit ahead of the others and mostly for a single reason, I enjoy the added-depth of 3D.
It can give me a deeper-immersion into the game and with that, I enjoy the ability/choice to zoom in and get very close to the terrain if I want to, while other times, when short on time...I zoom-out and play the game in the board-game fashion of H2&3.
Btw, if not for Q's SP A.I. H5 would be par with the rest, since the vanilla 3.1 A.I. lags a little behind both H2&3.

I really do like homm5, but homm2 is my personal favourite.
I think my order is this :-
Best is homm2.
2nd best is homm4 & homm5 cant decide which one i like better.
3rd best is homm3.
4th best is homm1.
Last is homm6.
