Quick Combat question for the gurus...
So here's the situation. Earlier today, I was playing a single scenario map and got attacked in my castle. Quick combat tells me that I'll win the battle with blahblahblah losses. Afterwards, I decided to buy myself a ballista and try the battle again. This time, quick combat tells me that I lost the battle. I understand that there's a certain degree of randomness, but we're talking really really big differences here.
For reference, here are the stats and creatures for this battle:
Me
Hero Stats
Ossir (Sylvan Hero): Level 14
Attack: 5
Defense: 5
Spellpower: 3
Knowledge: 8
Morale: 0
Luck: 3
Mana: 78/80
Skills Set
Expert Luck: Magic Resistance, Soldier's Luck
Expert Logistics
Basic Attack: Archery
Basic Light Magic
No favorite enemies on list
Creatures
-2 stacks of 79 Master Hunters
-3 stacks of 15 Druids
-1 stack of 23 Silver Unicorns
-1 stack of 8 Emerald Dragons
-1 First Aid Tent
Enemy
Hero Stats
Grok (Inferno Hero): Level 11
Attack: 7
Defense: 2
Spellpower: 1
Knowledge: 7
Morale: 3
Luck: 5
Mana: 70/70
Skills Set
Expert Luck
Basic Leadership
Advanced Defense
Creatures
-58 Succubus Mistresses
-11 Arch Devils
-86 Cerberi
-31 Pit Lords
-39 Nightmares
-253 Familiars
And here are the outcomes:
Quick Combat (Without Ballista)
*Wins battle with following losses:
-3 Emerald Dragons
-12 Silver Unicorns
-27 Elder Druids
-63 Master Hunters
Quick Combat (With Ballista)
*Loses battle with following killings:
-15 Succubus Mistresses
-86 Cerberi
-11 Arch Devils
-13 Nightmares
-108 Familiars
Manual Combat
*Wins battle with following losses:
-40 Master Hunters
-13 Elder Druids
-6 Emerald Dragons
-4 Silver Unicorns
So, can anyone tell me why the battle results were so different just because of 1 ballista? Logically, you'd think that with a added ballista, you would do extra damage...
Any help in analyzing this is appreciated.

The AI is bad.
I guess quick combat is an AI.vs.AI background(graphic-less) combat.
My suggestion: do combat manually, when you're not satisfied with the result by quick combat.

Probably had the silly ballista shooting at the succubus mistresses to give them retaliation attacks.

Yep. This is almost certainly the reason. I've noticed the same thing, though in a different setup. It's true both of manual and quick combat (assuming you don't have the appropriate control skill) that ballistae are a big no-no when fighting nasty quantities of succubus mistresses.

Yes, never have ballista against Succubus Mistresses (without Ballista skill)
That added to the Infernos Expert Luck, the outcome changes rapidly. You loose all Master Hunters and your Emeralds are forces to leave castle -> slaugter.
It would be nice to see the actual battles though

See I don't think the ballista is the problem because when she took just an ammo cart, quick combat results were even worse. I think the issue is that quick combat made a mistake the first time and when you change the war machines, it recalculates the results getting more what it normally shows. Incidentally, when she fought the battle herself, she did better (with my aid of course) than both quick combat results . The ballista never attacked the succubi, but even if it did, it would have been destroyed on the first retaliation so it wouldn't have effected the results that greatly.
Losses (with both ballista and ammo cart):
9 Silver Unicorns
27 Mater Hunters
1 Emerald Dragon

If I had to guess... maybe Pit lords targetted the area that had the war machines with meteor shower, but without the war machine there they cast weakness or whatever. Or it changed the area that the succubi mistresses targetted.

Well, the Pit Lords can only cast 1 Meteor Shower or 2 Fireballs. Even then, the damage difference isn't all that much.
I think the war machines messed up my initiative. When I did this manually, the succubi got to attack before I did if I only had an ammo cart, but they attacked after me if I had a ballista AND an ammo cart. And when I tried those two scenarios, I ended up with pretty drastic results.
So yeah, if anyone knows how the combat order is calculated, that'll be a great help.
