yep, hobbits (aka halflings, periannath) are the only creatures with feet like that and they are closer to humans than any other race...

Again I say, it could be worse. Do you remember the Goblins in M&M7? They looked like stocky, green skinned humans. Really Bad!
They did not have ranged weapons to look at them but they shot something out of their swords!?!?!?
P.S. Happy birthday Blue Camel Thingy!!!!
(I thought Camels had the two humps?)

theres 2 kinds of camels....
some have 1 hump, some have 2...
anyways, though tolkien said that hobbits have extrodinarily hairy feet he never said that orcs DONT have hairy feet...
so there is nothing wrong w/that part of the picture...
however, the pig-head is a different story altogether.

imho the hair on the orc's feet is just normal hair, nothing special, i also have similar kind of hair on my feet. and the hair will probably not be seen when you play anyway. unfortunately, i don't have tolkien's books with me, but i very vaguely remember that either meriadock or peregin experienced a hairy neck of an orc on their journey though rohan on the back of an orc. now, i didn't pay much attention on the specific topic when i read it, and it was a year or two ago, so you can guess there is a high chance of me being mistaken, but if anyone knows for sure, i will appreciate the info. if their necks were hairy enough to mention it, their feet might also have had some hair. also.. when sam and frodo disguised as orcs, there might have been some hint about comparison of their feet with the feet of the orcs that i also cannot look up atm.
and another question: did the tolkien's orcs have toes? weren't they black, not dark green?
the blood of the tolkien's orcs was black, so an orc could not possibly have had a red mouth as described by tolkien in the burial chamber scene in moria (unless he had just drunk blood or sth), and i suspect there were some other contradictions in tolkien, but i should check them first, either.
actually, i intended to pst on sth else today, seems that i got carried away with good old tolkien..
the tolkiens orcs didn't have a pig's head anyway, so why don't we find a source where the orcs have pig's heads and find if they have hairy feet there. otherways we are mixing two very different species.

well, they were transformed elves... NOT elves. tolkien even went into detail about how they were nasty creatures and dirty, etc...
once agin, since they ARENT elves, just kind of related to them, that doesnt rule them out of having foot hair... which begs the question, how do u know that elves DONT have hair on their feet???

...when I read something I tend to read VERY carefully... I've read Tolkien's notes about the looks of: Hobbits, Eldar, Yrc, Ents and Dwarves... we are talking about detailed descriptions from tip to toe...

well, i guess there are many ppl who have read tolkien carefully, but i guess few can quote any line from any of the middle-earth stories by heart. also, there is the problem that some things aren't written there, so it doesn't make a difference how careful the reader is. but it is possible that a reader adds some missing details with the aid of his fantasy.
what i can quote by heart:
'he was a huge orkish chieftain, almost man-high.'
but the orcs in homm screen were larger than the human hero, rather.
what's the source where orcs have pig's heads?

Robert Jordan
This whole discussion about pig heads reminds me of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time serie. You probably read it. They heavily feature some pig head dirty brutal monsters.
Maybe 3D0 took it from this serie.

I think they pull their foot hair off and make clothing out of it. So it just depends on what stage you see them at.
Actually I'm reminded more of a Bugbear or something like that than an Orc. But they still look fine and they'll probably be a tough unit.

imho the orcs don't look good when they are large. and maybe it is just the screenshots, but they look like some large black figures there, and the pig head cannot even be seen, so that they can easily get confused with minotaurs. previously, when i said that i liked the pig-headed orcs i thought that they would be smaller than humans, like some fat stupid-looking kids with pigs heads.
also, it is interesting that in the asylum we have medusa, minotaur and hydra, but centaurs and cyclops that also belong to the greek mythology seem to be in the stronghold. maybe the centaurs and the cyclops are considered less royal creatures, though. imho it might be expected that the orcs and the wolves might suit the barbarians, i don't see a good reason for moving them away from the town where they seemed to belong (in homm2 and homm3).
imho it would be quite perfect if the morale problems when you mix barbarians with other races were caused by other races humiliating the barbarians for their dumb faces, home-made armour, and their illiteracy. but the thunderbird (and also the white tiger, if it's in the stronghold) look like royal enough creatures for any type of town. so i would rather have the rocks with the barbarians instead of the thunderbird.

Actually, one of the five new pics has a screenshot where a creature casts a fire spells. There are some Orcs on this picture. Judging by the numbers I'd say that the Orcs have 12 hitpoints. Also my guess is that the orcs no longer are shooters. They look like a hand-to-hand unit to me.
On a side note... From the same picture I'd guess that the meek looking Trolls have 180 hit-points. Would that make them level 3 or strong level 2?
