Iris's Trip to China!
I hope it's okay to make a topic here. I didn't want to spam up the RL Photo thread with random pictures, and I didn't want these to be deleted overtime in the VW.
Anyway, I'm gonna load up this thread with pictures from my trip. Some are going to feature tourist attractions (but not many, since I've seen most of them already), and the rest will be random stuff that I end up doing.
Oh, and in advance, SORRY 56Kers!! >_<
Okay, enough talk. Pictures!
August 6, 2006
My parents took me to the Forbidden City today (one of the few famous places that I haven't been to before). This is where the emperor lived back in the day.
This is the entrance to the Forbidden City.
Some funky looking rocks in the yard of the City.
One of the many pavilions.
Me standing in front of more weird rocks.
A random huge pot. I felt like hugging it.
This is one of the statues outside some room. It's a big lion playing with a little one. I think it's kind of cute.
Gilt pots. When the foreigners invaded China, they wanted to take these pots with them, but due to the pots' weight and size, they weren't able to carry them back, so they just scraped off the gold and left the rest in the City.
The following are pictures of the some of the Emperor's rooms in the Forbidden City. I'm not too sure which is which (and neither are my parents ), so I'm just going to guess based on signs. If I find out for sure, I'll come back and edit these.
I think this is the Emperor's room.
This is where the Emperor held his conferences. (I'm pretty sure this one is correct )
My mom claims that this is where the Emperor gets married.
This is the Emperor's bedroom. I know this one is correct, because I realized that there are signs outside that explain what these rooms are. However, at this point, we were all too hot and tired to go back and find the other ones. Here's the official explanation.
Men in uniforms. I couldn't resist.
At the end of the Forbidden City is Tian An Men Square.
Look at the mass of people and the air pollution!
This is to the right of Tian An Men. It's a meeting hall for congress or something. Last year, my grandpa took me to a concert there. Very beautiful inside.
This is the History Museum to the left of Tian An Men.
These were so pretty I had to take a picture. ^_^ It wasn't until afterwards that I realized that all of them would be still in the picture.
This was lunch. Good old XiChuan (Sichuan) style meal. Everything is spicy. Look at that red oily spicy stuff in that middle dish.
That's it for now. More to come later.

I have always wanted to go there for some reason. I went on google earth and you can actually see it from there. It's so amazing. (My dad just came back from there!)
I will say I enjoy the pot hugging picture
Oh and men in uniform...oh yes

Agreed, although I definitely enjoyed those pictures and information. It definitely falls in line with my love for Asian Studies / Pre-modern China / Huang Fei Hung movies.

Hahahaha! I think that this is chinas way of getting back at USA...
You know the lables that say "made in China" almost on every possible thing you could buy? Well instead of that in china lables say "made in USA" in orded to gain equilibrium.
Addit by the way Iris, why is every thread has to be about you? Someone craves attention here!

Angelito, if you think that Chinese food is spicy, you haven't tried Thai food
I want to go to China one day. But after seeing so much pollution on those pics I think I may have just crossed Beijing from my "want to visit" list . I guess I've gotten weak living in a nice clean and green Toronto...
Oh ya, it is good to see that you are up and running, Iris (well, even though you are not really running, it is still good to see you sneaking in forbidden palaces to hug the random huge pots )

Hehehe, I'm glad you guys like them.
The air pollution is pretty bad. Shanghai is worse, if you can imagine it. x_X Tian An Men is at the center of Beijing, so it's especially bad. The city is built on Ring roads around this center, so the further out you go, get better it gets. Either way, I hope they get it cleared up a bit by 2008.
Foggy: Stay tuned for more.
Ruby: You dad was in China? Was it for work or was he vacationing? You should go with him next time.
Tina: Don't worry, I got plenty of pictures with just me. My mom figured it was best to take them before I eat myself fat. I think they turned out okay, but I won't be able to post those until I get a hold of a scanner. That won't happen till I get back to the US.
GG: I LOVE HUANG FEI HONG MOVIES! But he has to be played by Jet Li. The others are .
MM: I laughed when I saw that, too. And notice all the punctuation mistakes! Hahaha.
Legend: Thanks, you have fun in England. (That is where you're going, right? )
Angelito: We have so much good food here. You won't be disappointed if you come. I guarantee it.
Russ: If you come to China, you absolutely have to see Beijing and Shanghai (the two cities with the most pollution right now ). You'll miss out on so many good places if you don't.
Gom: Yes, I am the Guardian. Do I get a prize?
mr_niceguy: Hehehehe, thank you. Haven't seen you around lately. Glad you dropped by.
TA: I visited the Great Wall when I was little (like 3 or something). I think I fell asleep and my dad had to carry me back. I'd like to go see it again at some point, but I don't know if I want to do it in this weather. ^_^*
Consis: Thank you. ^_^ You people are the reason I keep coming back.
Okay, I have some more pictures. ^_^ Last time was China back in the day, and this time it'll be what it looks like now.
August 7, 2006
We went to one of the many flea markets (I don't know what else to call them) to look at shinies. I guess they don't allow pictures (unless you're buying), but I was sneaky and snapped one.
Oooohhh, shiiiinyyyyy...
I guess my mom was sneaky, too. I kind of look like I'm buying something.
So not too many pictures there. Afterwards, we went to Wang Fu Jing, which is kind of a hot spot for tourists, but it's also a good place for shopping for local residence.
This is one of the many small streets that sell random stuff.
This is the main street at night. I think they're conserving energy, so not all the lights were on. Could have been a lot prettier.
This is me, grabbing something to drink in one of the shops.
Now this is where the fun is. See all the lanterns? Each one is a booth. Loaded with food.
All sorts of fruit covered with crystallized sugar. ^_^
For the meat lovers. They have lamb, chicken, beef, fish, squid, you name it.
These are sticky rice cakes with sugary filling. This is as close to dessert as you're going to get. I think they're also covered in a sweet glaze.
Teas that bubble and foam. I thought they were really cool. Pictures couldn't do it, so I made a short clip. It's 1.98 MB, about 5 seconds long.
This is the restaurant across from the food street. Not very exciting in comparison.
This is Tian An Men at night. We took this picture out of a car window.
Edit: OMG. I've never used so many smilies in my life. Hahahahahaha.

I'm always fascinated by eras of great transformation. Unfortunately I've heard too many times that the Chinese government is trying to transform it's citizens traditional preference for bicycles into one for cars (hence the smog). This is the wrong road to take
Anyway, while you're there could you pick up a copy of Windows XP for me?
heh j/k
Thanks again, this surrogate vacation is fun.
