Paladins are good, but thunder thanes are pure might. In my opinion the're the best, mainly because of their chain-lighting-like attack.
Awesome!

Duhh...Death knigth's with deadly strike own anyone, but since Conflux of neutralism has standard policy of being overpowered (phoenix,mummy,wolf...) I got say ksathara's are real powerhouse.

I voted pit lords. they are good and if you get boots of the swift journey (if it was them) that increases their speed really helps and if you counter up with two sar-issus artifacts then they kick ass!

Voted Paladins, too.Dead Knights are #1 but Paladins are surely on the second position, followed by Ancient Treants.

Ancient treants are the best for a defensive stance or tanking attacks, they're much better if you have the dryads live longer in the battle to ressurect some of them. But, of course, Paladins are much better, great speed for a large unit, just like the lizardy one of the dungeon.

High initiative and damage may have to do something with that

And jousting
But seriously, the AI somehow always manages to position them perfectly to just cross the battlefield and instakill my carefully built-up stack of shooters with some stupid lucky strike before I can do anything about it
Sorry, I'm just frustrated

Then why are they not surrounded by other units to take the blow for them?

Each faction has a way around that. Call it swift mind, units with superior initiative, tactics or even terrain obstacles. In such situations you should assume that the opponent will be lucky to choose the right corner and see how to prevent it.

The best Tier 6? Well there is some matter of debate.
Yes, the Paladin will most often be considered the best Tier 6. Not unrightly so. I think the reason for its high praise is quite obvious. However Paladins become a little less useful in siege battles or in arenas that they can't hope to cross all in one turn.
Among the other factions, there are few units to consider. Inferno boasts the Pit Spawn but low Speed and Initiative make the Pit Spawn a questionable unit. Necropolis has the Wraiths whose Harm Touch can be quite useful, but in the long run, they just aren't good. Dungeon has Matriarchs but those are pretty pathetic (I know they aren't bad, but come on, this is amongst the Tier 6s). Academy has the Rakshasa which would be better if their Dash ability gave a noticable boost. Fortress has Thanes which can be devastating when paired with runes, but are not the great unit to be scared of. And Stronghold has Wyverns which are just pathetic since they do not benefit from the racial skill but still match the strength of those weak units. Sylvan, however, has Treants, and those are units that I consider annoying.
The logic I'm about to explain is a little confusing and it is based on harder difficulties. For those of you still playing Easy or Normal mode, the thing about Hard and Heroic is that there will be sacrifices. In greater battles against mere neutrals, you can lose lots of units that you must sacrifice for the sake of getting to the opponent ASAP. But because the Treants are so resilient, you will rarely notice a decline in population. By the time you reach the enemy, the Treant should be one of the most numerous units. And because they are so damn resilient, having 30 Treants in a siege battle isn't bad...
So the Treants can definetly compare to the Paladins, or at least they could if the Paladins didn't have that Immune to Frenzy tiebreaker.

it honestly depends.
in certain situations one tier 6 has considerable advantages.
i beleive that the fould wyvern is the most powerful if you play with the wyvern specialist and if you play with anyone else then the banshee is very strong.
banshees have great stats.
paladin's have too little hitpoints to be of a major usage.
treants are also very good.
matriarchs have too little attack and hitpoints
pit spawn and pit lords are mediocre and decent respectively
rakshassa are quite powerful i would pick them to paladins and treants any day
as for you MR. thane i beleive you are THe absolute most powerful tier six of all time.
the specials can decimate my army in seconds.
(i play on hard with my customized AI)
